It depends on where you are, here in Ireland and The UK we recommend sowing in the first few months of the year, onion sets can be planted mid to late march or earlier if grown in a polytunnel or cloche

you dont have to waste the spare sets, just plant them really close together in pots of compost and use them as spring onions :3

corinthians1:3 onion sets cost about $3 for a bag of 50 sets. Wealthy? Where did you draw THAT conclusion from to be SO JUDGEMENTAL!? If they were SO wealthy, they would proly have someone ELSE plant for them. Some ppl plant them as mentioned, and use for green onions, (spring) Some ppl MUST be judgemental when they obviously have ZERO experience, and care more about putting others down to elevate their useless and worthless lives. Think about HOW judgemental your comment was. IS THAT WHAT YOU PREACH on HOW to treat others in YOUR bible? You have issues buddy. Obviously you are MISSING THE POINT~! You dont need to be a dickbag to everyone you encounter, even if you disagree. ISNT THAT WHAT YOUR BIBLE TEACHES? Mine does, and YOU are a PERFECT example WHY ppl are moving away from religion. Hypocritical remarks and behavior and NASTY superior comments like yours turns ppl off, think about what you are doing on a DAILY basis. Perhaps you should PRACTICE what you preach and get an attitude adjustment to ATTRACT ppl to your bible, rather than to drive them away by saying and living a hateful jealous life under the pretense of "corinthians". Pretty obvoius you are unhappy with your station in life, so that gives you the right to criticize others for helping ppl...? How is THAT living a christian life? How bout you deal with your OWN issues and look for the positive in others, as your bible teaches. You must have been absent the day they handed out "understanding" what you read, happiness, compassion for others, empathy, and a brain attached to your heart. You MUST think your religion makes you SUPERIOR to others. Thats what I got from your nasty little remark. Hypocrite.

Man you guys are great, I have a lovely allotment in Hertford just north of London. Last year I had a couple of issues here and there with my veg and I did not know what the problems were but now I know so much such as bolting, white butterfly, how to rake diagonally over the parsnip seed that should be planted in May and so on. Thank you so much for your videos they are fantastic. I will post them up on my allotment facebook group and other social networks. Keep up the great work. :)

good video, I learned something about the shoots on the onion sets. I have found that its most important to plant the right kind of onions for your zone, as in "long day" or "short day", and WHEN you plant sets vs bundles/starts whether they bold or not. Its a good idea to know or they will bolt every time.

Sorry but where do you store the onions after harvesting them? In a cool dark room or warm and sunny room? Thanks
@Quickcrop
@Quickcrop 2 ай бұрын
Hi, I dry onions in a bright dry place (just inside the dooor of the polytunnel) before plaiting for storage. Onions store better where it is warm and dry so the house is better than a cool, dark shed. Onions stored in a shed can rot due to sweating when warm air enters a shed after a cold night, this causes condensation to form on the onion skins.

I am quite confused. I have been watching many videos that say to grow sets and not the tiny looking onions like you show in this video. I grew my own starts and transplanted them and they turned out great, but I want nice and uniform onions like shown. The extensive research showed not to grow those because they are biannual. Will you please address this confusion? Thank you

That's because Ireland only has one climate zone -- wet temperate wet. Sometimes with added wet. Joking aside, at the latitude of 50-60N, in Ireland and the UK the onions grown are what North Americans would think of as long day onions. Because the climate is comparatively mild we can sow seed in October and plant sets in March to get a harvest from June through to August.

Hi, How to control onion maggots with chemical.Do you know,thanks
@Quickcrop
@Quickcrop 7 жыл бұрын
White onion varieties are prone to onion maggot attack. Grow red onions and Japanese bunching onions, which are somewhat resistant to onion maggot damage. It often helps to sprinkle onion planted areas with ground cayenne pepper, ginger, dill or chili powder to repel females and prevent them from laying eggs.

Hi Chris, your onions may well be feeling the effects of the wet weather. They should be fine with the fallen stalks, when they're ready the leaves start to turn yellow.

I heard a funny story about an onion thief. I think its an indian legend. A guy was caught stealing 1 hundred onions. Goes to court and gets fined (lets say £3000) the guy says if he pays that money he will be in debt for years and he cant afford it so the judge says ok you can eat the 100 onions or get 100 shoe beatings 😄😄 so the guy says fine ill eat the onions. After 15 onions he is finding it unbearable and begs to change his punishment. He wants to take the beating. So he kneels down hands behind his back and takes the first 5 hits. He is feeling very sore and still has onions burning inside him. He takes another 12 hits from the shoe, alternating the side of the face. So by this time he is well and truelly bruised and damaged and begs to change the punishment. In the end he had to pay the fine 😄😄
