How To Grow Orlaya Grandiflora

They look great mass planted and even after they die their seed heads look beautiful and it gives winter interest if left in the landscape. Love this annual and it will always have a place in my landscape.

They do look lovely planted on mass in the garden. So pretty and will quite happily self sow if you leave the seed heads on in the garden. That’s the easiest way to get them to grow again as the natural temperature fluctuations over the winter and spring break down the seed compounds and they germinate easily whereas it’s a bit more tricky starting them off indoors. I’d love to learn more about growing snapdragons, I seem to have much trouble growing them. I’m from the States and our climate isn’t terribly different from Scotland (just warmer in the summer). BTW, Scotland is our favorite place to visit!

@@Gretchen5010 I will definitely have to do a snapdragon video this year. I think it will be a bit later though as I have started filming for it but want to wait and get some more of the flowers in bloom In it first. They are such tiny seeds to work with! Your climate sounds lovely if it is similar to Scotland but a bit warmer in the summer, that would be lovely! I am glad you have enjoyed some visits to Scotland. There are so many parts of it we love spending time in as a family but especially the islands and west coast.

Hi Lindsey, thank you. I hope you get on well growing orlaya this year. It does seem to like the temperature fluctuations to germinate so if there is no sign of it after a few weeks get them outside for a week or two and then back into the warmth and then you should get lots of lovely seedlings x

Hello Kathy, I am so pleased you are enjoying my series on the individual flowers. My next one in May is going to be on nigella. That’s a great idea for sweet rocket and stocks. I will do them in June/July when I am sowing them as biennials and can film some of the seedlings as they are just getting going. Thanks for the ideas. Wonderful instructions for growing orlaya , I purchased seeds last year but never sowed them , because I was worried they would self seed all over the garden. I think I will give them a try.

They definitely can self seed in the garden but you can avoid that by just dead heading the stems after flowering before they reach that stage. It is such a beautiful flower, it is well worth growing. Thanks for watching this weeks video 😊 x

@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm the weather in Poland is very similar to the weather in Scotland. My orlaya is already sown and is starting to sprout 😀

@@hannabulanda7874 that’s great that your Orlaya is sprouting. I have another batch on that is just starting to germinate too after a couple of weeks. If Poland is very similar in climate to Scotland you will just be at the same stage as us just now. Today I saw the first buds on some of the early tulips coming through 😀 🌷

@Cloudberry Flowers - Flower Farm and Garden I was wondering if winter sowing in plastic milk jugs and putting them out on my deck in the snow would create the cold treatment needed for germination? I had really good luck with Sea Holly and Hissop started this way last year.

Hi Catherine, thanks for another informative video. Your bridal bouquets are so lovely. I am currently growing orlaya for the first time. I start most of my seeds in seed trays in my basement under grow lights. I noticed that they took awhile to germinate so perhaps I should have put them in the fridge or freezer before sowing them. I'm excited that they can handle cold temps. Currently we are still having nights around -6C/20F. Hoping to transplant in April.

Thank you, I am so glad you are enjoying seeing the flowers. Making videos like this at this time is lovely because you can look back on all last years flowers and get excited about what is to come. We are back to snow and minus 8 temps too overnight like you so I am ready for spring and some warmth now. If you are doing succession sowings of orlaya later this season especially when it is warmer it might help to put the seeds in the fridge/freezer for a week first.I hope you have a great growing season 🌸

Just found your channel today! Absolutely beautiful bouquets! I see that you’ve been farming for 8 yrs and looks like you have your growing systems well established. I just took a course this past fall on flower farming and learned to soil block instead of planting in trays or cell packs. Such a space saving way to propagate plants from seeds. I’m not in business yet, just growing for my garden this year. I am interested in knowing if you have ever used soil blocking to propagate plants on your farm?

It is something I have seen other flower farmers using but no I haven’t tried soil blocking yet. I think there is lots I could learn there including knowing how to get the composition of soil right in the blocks and which size is best to start with. Something to try in the future.

Thanks so much for watching from Canada 😊 That’s great you chilled the seed before sowing. At this time of year I do put them on a heat mat. They germinate for me around 18-20 c. If they haven’t germinated after a couple of weeks I will take them off it to cold stratify for a few weeks before placing them back on the heat mat. Later batches sown April/May may not need the heat mat as the greenhouse is warmer then for germination. I haven’t used grow lights mainly because i do not have the set up for that but I think when light levels are still lower at this time of year maximising light for your seedlings is so important. I do this by making sure the seedlings grow on in the greenhouse but if you have grow lights using them would be an advantage in the later winter months.

What do you do about pinching out to make them bushier? My autumn sown conservatory plants are now 25cm tall

I never pinch out my orlaya. I have found they don’t need it. It may be at this time of year it’s starting to get warm in the conservatory and they would be better growing on cooler to stop getting too leggy or tall.
