I planted those persimmon seed 13 years ago and forgot about it completely. Last summer I found that that strange tree outside of my window was a persimmon tree with fully ripe persimmons on it! They are much smaller than store bought persimmons, but still, it's pretty cool. Unfortunately, they are up an embankment and I can never get to the fruit, so that's the sad part. But just so people know you can literally plant a seed and forget about it and grow a persimmon tree. I have clay soil and the tree is quite literally growing on a rock with soul atop, which is the hill in my backyard. The conditions really aren't great for a tree to grow but this thing did just fine. So sometimes I think people should just experimenting just go plant some seeds and forget about it and if something grows then that's just bonus. I also have wild muscadines which tastes far better than the ones that you can get at the store.

What a cool story! Thanks heaps for the comment that’s awesome. I agree. Some people shut the idea down of growing seeds that you don’t know if they’ll end up good or not, but what do you have to loose right, and for me it’s more about the enjoyment of growing something than the eventual result :)

@@TheKiwiGrower I'm going to buy one of those fruit pickers for high hanging fruit and then I can get to both my persimmons and my muscadines this summer! Yep, sometimes you just get lucky, and it's always worth a shot! 🍀

Try at least an 8" deep pot and plant in worm castings, works for me. 6 years and average 37 to 60 fruit from 4 trees I planted in full sun on my place in East Texas.

For the germination process, I really just put some soil in a little platic bowl, planted the seed, put a little amont of water and close the bowl with a lid. I put the bowl in front of a window so it can get plenty of sun and warmt from it. It took really no time at all before it started to sprout. I find this method is the best most of the time and you don't have to worry as much for breaking the roots that are tingled in the paper towel.

Love your cat. Also can hear all the birds in your yard. I checked out your website because the persimmon is new to me. It is many raw recipes and I have a feeling I am going to like it. I live in Florida and found it tough to find them especially ripened, which is how I need them to be!!!! I bought around seven and need them in a few days. Some of them are soft. I am supposed to use them when they are gooey!! Thanks for showing how to grow them!!

Hardest thing in cultivation of persimmon is to reach the seeds. I can freely say that on average you have to eat 5 kg of fruit to get one seed. The two most common varieties of persimmon in my stores are Fuyu and Hachiya. Seeds of these two varieties are drastically different. After removing the seeds from the fruit I wash them and leave submerged in water for 48 hours. Then move them into a zip-lock and keep in the fridge until mid-February. Seeds treated in this manner germinates within a week

+Stevan Miletic I've come across a couple of seeds in one fruit a few months back and kept them. Sadly, they were not stratified, I didn't know that was necessary for growing persimmon from a seed. They're also dry now, so I wonder if is it not to late to try and stratify them in a fridge. What do you think? I would appreciate an advice :)
@stevanmiletic5299
@stevanmiletic5299 9 жыл бұрын
+Milena Hi Milena. If you have enough seed you can divide them into two groups. Soak one group in warm water for two days and plant immediately. You can put another group on two months stratification after immersion. I kept seeds in dry conditions in refrigerator up to 3 years and it has germinated in a reasonable percentage. In any case, soaking is necessary.

Thank you so much for your video. I've started to grow many thing from their seed and my persimmon was weird with it's roots curving and all. So I tried to plant the seed numerous time and it was always kinda resurfacing. Now I understand why! As for myself, it's true that most of the persimmons I bought were seedless but once in a while, I stumble upon some and save them. I was more lucky with fruits and vegetables little store that are not affiliated to big grocery chain.

The reason no seed from stores is it was picked early because the fruit is too soft to ship. These days you can buy good seed online rather reasonably from Virginia or Wisconsin.

Hi from France, I got a couple of Fuyu Persimmons from my local organic shop, they were over-ripe and they gave them to me for my chickens but they looked so good we ate them! They have very large seeds inside so I am going to have a go with your two methods and see what comes up. Just a tip, organic shops sell non-hybrid - old variety fruit so if you want seeds that's also an option. Best Wishes and thanks for the information, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

These grow like weeds. Just jam a fruit into some potting soil in a container & you'll get several seedlings from each fruit. Little to no effort required to start them. Then plant at the border / edge of your woods or forest canopy so they get sun most of day & some shade. Deer LOVE these...

I might be an exception to the norm. I very easily germinated a persimmon seed from a store bought fruit. I was surprised to even find seed and accidentally cut one of them. It is now 4" tall. It is a Fuyu type and unfortunately I don't think it will survive in my zone here in Canada. Do you think I can successfully grow it doing a indoor\outdoor scenario? I am a horticulturalist but am not familiar with persimmon enough to know. Any input would be appreciated.

I haven't looked too deeply into container growing them, but I plan to do something similar for black sapote which are related and more cold sensitive. Persimmons handle frost where I live fine, so maybe if you protect yours inside, even if it gets a bit cold in there it should be fine. They do have a long deep tap root, so will definitely need a large deep pot. Worth a go I reckon. Would be keen to find out how it goes! :)

I have a bunch of seeds from last year and I planted some in the sandy soil of Las Vegas. I also threw some avocado seeds into my compost pile and I have about 6 trees coming up. One I transplanted to another location in my yard and it seems to be thriving. My only question is the one I transplanted an avocado or a Fuyu Persimmon. The leaves look more like the persimmon trees I've seen ...very bright lime green and large. Its about 10" high right now. The leaves on the other trees are slimmer and start out sort of dark brown and get greener as they develop. If anyone could help me identify whether or not this little tree is a Fuyu Persimmon tree, I'd be oh so grateful! Now that we're coming in to the Winter months I'm wondering if I need to surround it with sweaters or something appropriate to keep it from dying?

Actually, I've had luck with germination that I would like to put here for the next person. American Persimmon is best for cold climates, do your research on what persimmon is best for your climate. Soak in warm water for 6 days, some make start during this process. Those that don't, you can use the paper towels method but keep an eye on them for mold. You can spray the water mixed with hydrogen peroxide to avoid this. It helps.

Just a little education from someone who has been into horticulture since I could hold a shovel. Native varietals of persimmon are either male or female trees. The modern varieties, from nurseries, are most likely all female. They will grow persimmons, but they are a 'sterile' or seedless fruit. In order to get seeds in your fruit you must have at least 1 male in the area in order to make the fruit 'fertile' or seeded. I hope I settled your curiosity about the persimmon.

It's now 3" high and its first cotyledon leaves are a nice deep green colour, and there's the tiniest hint of a new pair of true leaves developing. Just coming into our late winter/early spring period here. By the time Spring is well and truly here, it will be well on its way... So. Now what? Keep it in a pot? Outside for the warmer weather? What about next winter? And when do I get to pick the fruit?!? (J/K...!)

Hey Sparki and owner! Great Video. What is the appropriate climate for persimmon to grow and where can I purchase the seeds that will germinate?

Etsy. They have it all over the place. I've purchased some and they were germinating fairly quickly. Also it depends on the type you buy, American Persimmons are good with colder climates. Asian Persimmons aren't.

Sparky is gorgeous and you're not so bad yourself. Hopefully you managed to avoid the big quake down your way and are safe. I'm curious as to whether you've heard of Kratky gardening and whether that would work for the Fuyu.

How long does it take for the persimmon tree to bear fruit after it is planted from a seed?

You missed several, and the most important part, what to use and what to put in the soil for healthy growth, disease/pest resistance, micro/macro nutrients, how moist persimmons need to stay etc.

Hey,thanks for a great video and your cat is charming:) I already found you on Facebook;) So..I just found a big surprise - a seed in a persimmon that i bought from a supermarket. I didn't even known that persimmons do have seeds! I'm keep eating more of them but don't find any seeds. I found an advice that before seeding persimmons you must to refrigerate seeds for 3-4 months, because Germination of persimmon tree seeds requires a period of consistent cold. Do you refrigerate your seeds?

Do you know how long it takes for the leaves to break through the persimmon seed? My seeds grew an impressive tap root, but have been looking like your other seedlings for about two weeks now.

A few of mine didn’t open on their own even though the root looked strong. Left alone, they fail because the leaves stay trapped in the seed shell and it basically suffocates itself. When I realized they weren’t going to open on their own, I carefully cracked the hull. If you want too long, the leaves stay damaged until the next ones come, which is delayed and struggled due to the initial damage that interferes with the plant’s process. Sometimes they still fail after you help it. The seeds that thrive give better leaves and i think not all seeds are meant to thrive. It’s natural to weed out the weaker seedlings. Since I am growing for fun more than food, I’m okay with helping the runts continue even though they are less viable.
