Absolutely love these flowers. They are usually so reasonably priced in the store for large bunches. The mass of single color arrangements (my preferred way with these flowers) in a vase is just something else. I have a yellow flowered bunch and a pink flowered bunch currently and they make me smile when I look at them. They really do last a long time. I tend to snip off the stamen tips so the pollen dust and the little seed heads (?) don't end up falling off later and making a mess. Keeps them tidier and, anecdotally, keeps the blooms longer since there is no energy spent by the flowers to get the pollen out and seeds to drop. You are lucky to be able to grow these beauties!! xx

If they already bloomed, the leaves turn brown which you need to pluck off. It’s a normal thing that happens, just make sure you’re giving it enough water

Hi there, The wife and I have recently fallen love with these plants. I just planted some out today. I like the idea of adding some mulch as I imagine that will make it easier for the tubers to form in the loose soil. Here in Adelaide (Australia) we have clay soils, so we add lots of organic matter and gypsum to help loosen the soil particles up. Our temperatures range from 2deg in winter to 45 degrees Celsius in summer. Wondering what temperatures you get where you are?
@BirdofParadise
@BirdofParadise Ай бұрын
Lovely 😊 I’d imagine you’d have to! Very smart to add organic matter plus the layer of mulch. We are in sunny California, so no harsh weather here… we are blessed to have temps in the 70’s (Fahrenheit) even in the Fall :)

Hello, I just found your site looking for this exact plant that I fell in Love with a few years ago but it didn't come up the next year. I was devastated! I'm going to continue to search for this particular one of the Alstroemeria. The Peruvian Lilly. My question to you is if I bring it in the house in the winter is there any way to get rid of the little bugs that seem to be crawling in the pot, soil, and around the plane base? Possibly anything in the plant itself? Second, do you know anywhere in the USA (I live in New Mexico) where I can purchase or order this plant? Thank you so much! First time here and will be a lifetime follower!
@BirdofParadise
@BirdofParadise Жыл бұрын
That makes me so happy! Personally I haven’t had to bring my plants in during the winter (no frost where I live), so I’ll have to look into the bug problem you’re having. I would suggest looking up something natural online (DIY non chemical). A lot of local nurseries carry alstroemeria (starting in the spring). Have you had any luck there?

We just bought 2 5 gallon Alstromerias. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful! we are zone 10A in southern California, I'm going to try to find a place that has morning sun / afternoon shade and plant them today. I can't wait to propogate them. Any idea how often they should be watered and how many galloons of water to give at a time, until they are established? and how long to get established? how do know you've given a plant an "inch" of water? thanks so much, love the videos! We also just planted a blood leaf.
@BirdofParadise
@BirdofParadise 2 жыл бұрын
That’s great! I’m glad it helped. Depending on how much sun they’re getting, you would base your water consumption on that. For example, more sun~ more water in the mornings. I would just eye ball it- it doesn’t have to be exact. Just water them every few days until they get established (you don’t need to water them too much). You’ll know they’re established when they start spreading/ after a month or so they should be good!

Grew alstroemeria this year for first time after flowering the leaves looked as they were eaten away any advice please
@BirdofParadise
@BirdofParadise 2 ай бұрын
Hi! How long after flowering did they look like that? After Alstroemeria is done blooming, the leaves start wilting/turn yellow and then brown. This is normal, and once the leaves are brown you pluck them off :) did your leaves turn brown or have bite marks?
@peternicklin3961
@peternicklin3961 2 ай бұрын

@BirdofParadise

It could be snails.. if there is an iridescent slime trail you have your answer. I’m not sure which bug is eating your plants, but try keeping the leaves dry and not damp, as that invites them. Make sure your plants have proper drainage, and gently pluck off any snails when you see them. I hope this helps! Wish I could help more but without seeing it’s tough

Hi, I'm from Poland/Europe zone 6-7 At extreme we have in the summer up to +35°C (could be for a few days) average 20-25°C and in the winter extreme is -30°C (for a few days) avarage between +5°C and -5°C. My alstromeria is in the pot, for a winter will be hidden in a garage with a window, temperature inside will be around 8°C. Is my princess going to survive it? Should I remove/pluck out all foliage for the winter and leave roots in the soil and water it from time to time? I was removing foliage during summer vegetataion to encurage growth of roots and new stemps and it was working. What should I do for the winter? Regards!

Hello! Wow love that you’re watching all the way from Poland :) you’re doing great by bringing it inside in the winter- you’re on the right track. Definitely keep watering it while it’s inside and plant it back in the ground when the last frost is over. Keep me updated. Hope that was helpful, but you seem to know what you’re doing.
