PicketFenceGree... Growing vinca from seed can be a challenge, until recently I have had some issues growing, now have discovered that using a fungicide drench when planting can increase your success. #dianemummgardenvideos

Thank you! This was super helpful. I just purchased a bunch of vinca seed and it was great to see how you went about planting larger amounts.

I agree with you...getting just the right water is not easy. I still mess up sometimes. Once you get them up, are they pretty simple to deal with ?

Thank you for your video. It was very informative but have one question. I planted some vinca seeds 5 days ago and yesterday I noticed that all have sprouted. I kept them in the dark with a heat mat and had great germination. My issue is I'm not sure when to move them to the grow lights. Some are starting to get lanky. The seed shell has fallen but the cotyledon leaves have not formed. Is it too early to move to the grow lights?

once germinated I usually put under the lights..

thanks for sharing the video. I am going to plant periwinkle...however i have read from several sources that i need to wrap up the flat with big trash bag to ensure that the moisture will be retained and check again for a week to see any germination..Is it true?

vinca minor is a perennial in our area, and is more of a vining plant, vinca I grow here is upright flowering annual, awesome for heat and sun..
@dianemummvideos13 жыл бұрын
@mhpgardener , they still are tricky , repeat treatments of fungicide helps but not always fool proof.. I think next year I need to water from the bottom, most plants don't seem to mind but I believe vinca will benefit..

There are varieties of Madagascar periwinkle that grow wild in my state ~ Florida. They are fairly carefree and bloom nearly yr round in my climate. Swallowtails love them. Do you collect your own seeds? Should the pods be allowed to dry on the plant before harvesting or can they be collected while the pods are still green?
@dianemummvideos10 жыл бұрын
If they produce seeds , yes by all means I haven't seen all of mine do so however.. yes let them dry down fall months and collect then..

I am having trouble finding vinca minor seeds, any suggestions? I bought bare roots a few years ago and they are finally taking off, I would prefer to grow them from seed.

I've planted some vinca seed and kept them in darkness, and now a few seedlings have sprouted - should i remove the whole tray from darkness now, or will that prevent the other seeds from germinating?
@dianemummvideos Жыл бұрын
I would wait for more to germinate.. some may also germinate once you expose to light.. uneven germination is hard to deal with some times... so be patient.. and just enjoy the process... good luck!

hi, when do you remove them from the darkness? i have some that are starting to grow but still have the seed on the tip of them.
@dianemummvideos12 жыл бұрын
have found vinca likes a more porous soil.. use more perlite gives the roots better aeration and better result, vinca is very hard to keep disease free when starting them.. they do not like heavy or non breathing soil..

Hi, when it’s said they germinate in the dark is like complete 100% dark? Or just it doesn’t need that much sunlight? Also, when it’s time to get them out to the light? Thanks!!
@dianemummvideos4 жыл бұрын
I cover the seed with soil and place in darkness and heat until they germinate..then place under light..once germinated
@dianemummvideos12 жыл бұрын
a peat and vermiculite mix, sometimes with perlite too..

Hi, My adult has wilted bottom up overnight. It gets enough sunlight and water. Any suggestions to save the plant?
@dianemummvideos10 жыл бұрын
I would be checking the stem for rot or root for rot... usually where the problem lies, fungicide of some kind if not too late..
@biswadebdass10 жыл бұрын
Diane Mumm Garden Videos Thanks. the root was fine, i suspect the stem. Couldn't save the plant but got a few seeds. trying to germinate them.
@thunderlord22006 жыл бұрын
you might be over watering them and or you might have nats or other soil bugs. i use water with aspirin (1 in a gal) to help control normal fungus and other home uses

Thanks for this interesting video! When my trailing vinca become too long and lanky, is it okay to just cut them? Can the stem cuttings be replanted?
@dianemummvideos8 жыл бұрын
+Sheryl Ellis absolutely cut them back.. you can try and propagate I haven't done it as I always had so much already.. good luck!
@mandylana79448 жыл бұрын
Cut atleast 5-8cm long stem, the tender ones, immediately under the leaves and then transplant them. It is important to follow the prescribed length for cutting.

So..when you plant the seeds you should keep them in a dark area (its warm ) cuz I've planted a bunch of different flowers and put them under the sun they've all grown but no sign for the vinca whatsoever..i planted them in may 3th today is may 11th does it need more time or I'm doing something wrong? (This is my first time Idk what to do)
@dianemummvideos7 жыл бұрын
some seeds germinate in dark or light just depends .. the vinca can dampen off it is a tricky seed to grow.. I would give it more time .. they also need heat to germinate a warm spot .. good luck!

What did I do wrong? My seeds sprouted to lemon color 2 inch leggy growth. Do I throw them out? Thanks.
@dianemummvideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peggy, vinca does have a tendency to yellow .. never had them do that thou just after germination... only as they have grown for a bit and usually lacking nutrients .. is your soil too wet maybe? I wouldn't throw them out .. see how they do the new leaves that come may be more green.. lets hope so...
