I'm a complete newbie. Last summer I started this... learnt a lot of lessons the hard way. I started far too late. But i planted one store bought potato and harvested 20 good size potatoes and there were loads of tubers. I didn't have the same success with my brassicas. I thought the beautiful white butterflies flying around them was amazing and was excited to see how my new hobby was attracting beautiful insects. 🙈🙄 Then realised they were laying eggs and the catapillers demolished everything 🙄😂 This year I'm starting early 🙌 , a little more educated than last with heaps more to learn and I'm really looking forward to having a better chance with all my veggies. I have found taking this up as a hobby, has been incredibly amazing for my mental health. Esp as I'd had postnatal depression and I have generalised anxiety disorder. I have found an amazing hobby that benefits and feeds my whole family ... 3 adult boys and a baby girl. I'm not one for sitting around, checking fb or hanging out with girlfriends etc. I've always needed something mentally and physically stimulating...but a hobby where I don't feel its selfish. Hence i gave this a go. Now I can do something that benefits my family and as a major plus.... my little girl gets to help out and enjoy fresh air and learn skills. .Super excited now to get starting back. 🥰.

Wow! I had gotten some seed potatoes for free at a store. Small ones with sprouts. I threw them away after I learned they might not sprout or make small ones. That's a lot of potatoes!!

I got myself a bag of seed potatoes from the walmart garden center. There were eight of them for three dollars. That was a month ago and that store seems to always be out of everything so you might look in the home improvement stores too. Mine are growing well and all have come up with nice green leafy plants. I bought a three pack of 10 gallon grow bags from amazon. I put three in two bags and the final two seed potatoes in the last grow bag. This is my first time growing potatoes so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I have learned a whole lot from watching this guys videos. Otherwise I wouldn’t have much of a clue seeing as how I was raised in Los Angeles with little gardening experience.

You kind of don't know until harvest time. I had 2 free buds from a store and I threw them out. Didn't give them a chance! I didn't think Walmart had any. Fiddlesticks!!

I contacted a local farmer and asked for some straw. When I bought it, I told him I would use it to hill my potatoes in a grow bag, to which he asked, "did you read that in a book?" In Wisconsin, I planted 34 -10 gallon containers...and they're doing great! Thanks so much!

Great video. I used organic russet potatoes from a local co-op and they sprouted and grew well (they must not use the sprout retardant). I did get a good crop in our bed and in containers. This season, i am doing the same but going all in with containers (10 and 15 gallon). At harvest, I like the ability to “dump” the container onto a tarp, sift through and find the hidden treasure and then put soil into a reclaimed soil bin using the tarp to transfer. Thanks again.

I started 9 small red La Soda seed potatoes in an XL patio flower pot April 14th. They got to be about 4 ft tall before the foliage fell over. I hilled them 3 times, adding blood meal each time (learned that watching Pawpaw Ridge on Facebook). I dug down a little under halfway down the side of the pot and I have a few potatoes that are almost baseball sized. The foliage has just started to die back. I should be able to harvest around June 8th or so. This is the first time I've ever grown potatoes and I am so excited to see the harvest!

This is our first year adding seaweed to our potato bags instead of sulfur. Local people swear by it. Also, it's fun to visit the beach and fill bags with dried seaweed.

I am from Malaysia. I am gonna start growing potatoes here in my garden in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I always though you can't grow potato in a tropical climate like my country Malaysia. I used to grow them in Utah when I was a student there. But after watching videos of Indonesians growing potato in tropical Jakarta, I wanna give a try here in tropical Kuala Lumpur. though potatoes are dirt cheap in Malaysia, imported from India, China, Europe, even US.

@@alextromler6407 Bad! I now give up potato growing, after all past attempts failed. The tubers germinated each time, sending out shoots that grew up healthy, bushy and green. Then after while, they wilted, leaves turned yellow, stems started to rot, and eventually died.

If you're willing to put in some work, there are more wild potatoes that have some possibility of growing in warm areas of the world, but you'd probably have to grow them from true seed and not baby tubers (which we call seed potatoes). If you're interested look up cultivariable for more info

@@Mustafa-Kamal-Satar the potato root needs a lot of airspace in the soil (airy soil amendments like perlite and peat moss make up to 60-80% volume of bagged soil mix here in Canada) also, I think Malaysian Tropical rain is too heavy and will saturate the soil way too much and suffocates the roots to death, especially if it's not planted in the very airy fabric grow bag or raised bed like here. Also, any Clay or compaction-prone soil will very quickly suffocate the roots very quickly too.

I have some questions: 1. How do you know when they’re ready for harvest? 2. How do you know how much water to give them and when? 3. What pests do I need to be aware of? 4. How many seeds can I put in a 5 or 10 gallon container? 5. How many potatoes do you expect to harvest from one seed? Sorry if these are dumb but I’m very new and trying to learn.

It might be a bit late (it's 2023 now), but I've been following a KZbin channel called Self Suffiicient Me that is run by Mark in Australia, and even though he's in a much different climate, he uses all raised beds and goes into a lot of detail about all the things he's tried and why he makes the choices he does. Not all store bought potato’s are sprayed with bud sprouting inhibitors. I’ve planted many different types and sizes of store bought potato’s and they’ve all reproduced very nicely. My favorite are the baby mix new potatoes grown in South America that Sams Club carries.. They reproduce perfectly every time. Just thought I would share...

I also usually use store bought potatoes and have never had a problem here in MI. It's totally possible we've just gotten lucky though. I usually shop at our farm market and I know most everything is locally sourced. As Luke warned, I had one set that never even formed eyes. I tend to approach it as a cost/benefit kind of thing. When 5 seed potatoes are nearly triple the cost of an entire pound from the produce department it makes sense to me to take the risk. Last year we used seed potatoes and didn't end up with much at all, but I didn't know much then about controlling ph or any of those kinds of tips. I'm eyeing some of the specialty varieties from my local garden center pretty hard though. Maybe once we've gotten a little better at our potato game...

Agree with Luke on recycling your soil for potatoes. I fill my containers with composted straw from previous year's straw bale gardens about 3/4 and then put refreshed/used soil mix on top. I normally just add a little nitrogen (leaf growth) and Azomite early on and then fertilize a little with an odd mix of non-nitrogen fertilizers one time around late May and get pretty good results. I also use containers and start my seed potatoes in the garage in early April for a July harvest. Having bags makes it easy to just move them into the sun when the weather is nice, and then indoors when it looks like it's going to freeze. However this year I forgot and just left them outside from mid-April and they are still coming up just fine despite temps in the mid-20s for a couple of evenings. I think the composted straw helped. Didn't know about the PH requirement but will try adding some sulphur to see if we get bigger tubers. Thanks Luke!!

I think the sprout inhibitor is a popular myth but ultimately not true. Have used store bought potatoes organic and inorganic many many times with zero issues. Multiple varieties etc.. etc...

Is it possible that the sprout inhibiters are not 100% indefinite prevention, with the effects wearing off over time and that the produce on store shelves is actually quite old. I thought there was the application of ripening inhibitors on alot of produce to keep it travel, warehouse and shelf stable as long as possible. Maybe temperature is a factor as well. People's homes tend to be warm.

I do mine like many KZbin videos showed. I fill the container 4 inches then I add 4 inches on top. As the plants grow I cover them when the plants get about 3 inches tall and cover again. I do this until the pot is completely full. I started this process about a month ago for my first planting. It is now completely full of soil with about 5 inches of plant on top. It's a bit extra work but it's worth it.

When you plant indeterminate potatoes they keep growing and they produce more potatoes along the stems. So you put down soil then the seed potatoes and a few inches of soil then when the stalks/ leaves sprout through the soil a few inches you cover them with more soil let them grow through again and add soil again repeating until your container is full to the desired height. The potatoes luke is talking about in this video and most of the other potato videos ive seen him do are all determinate varieties and they dont continue to grow up when you keep adding soil. Ive grown indeterminate potatoes with great sucess filling the entire container so i found it a little odd that he called it a myth....im going to try again this year with much deeper containers and i guess ill find out.

It was only recently that I found out that there is no point in continuing to hill potatoes throughout the season, because contrary to popular belief, they do not produce more tubers/roots along the stem. As Luke said, the main aim of hilling is to keep the sunlight/heat off developing/developed potatoes.

I believe that the amount of hilling depends on the type of potato seed sown. From what I understand, indeterminate potatoes grow up along the stem where as determinate potatoes set new potatoes closer to the seed potato. Hollis and Nancy's homestead has a great tutorial about types of potatoes and how they grow them in pots. It's worth checking out at the very least!

Kathleen Laverty oh, ok-I didn’t know that-I might do a bit of research into it-I personally are quite happy to regularly hill potatoes-if it’s going to increase my yield-but it’s a lot of extra work if it isn’t necessary!

rachael james I agree! I can tell you from my own experience that this is true. Last year I filled a 30 gallon fabric container with potting mix, compost etc. I positioned the seed potatoes 6 inches from bottom and continued to hill as plants grow taller. Well when all said and done. Most of the tubers were with in 12 inches of the original seed potatoes. None were at the top 12 inches . So I looked into it and discovered that they were red potatoes of the determinant variety. I didn’t need to hill up 24 inches above them. Lesson learned : this year I’m learning which varieties are in needed of little hilling and lot of hilling depending on where the tubers set. Also I paying much closer attention to the number of days to maturity. Lady year , I waited until the stems were really dead . The voles and chipmunks like fresh potatoes as well! Good luck ! I only grew potatoes for the first time last year-Royal Blue-I wanted an all purpose variety-I did put them in late, as it was really hard year for getting seed potatoes where I am in Australia-I hilled them regularly, thinking I would get more potatoes, and I did get quite a few-but because I put them in really late, I mainly got babies! No drama though, I saved quite a few, and now I’ve got seed potatoes to put in real soon! (I’m in temperate Australia, so we have upto 104F summers/frost free winters, generally not any colder than 37.4F, but generally 46.4-53.6F). Potatoes are grown in winter here rather than summer as a general rule-along with most of the cooler crops-like brassicas and peas/broad beans. Pole/bush beans and snow peas are grown in summer. I didn’t even know there were determinate and indeterminate varieties of potatoes-but I guess it makes sense with them being related to tomatoes!!! Thanks for the info!!!

Thanks for all of the great tip and how to grow properly . I have started growing 2 yrs ago first year was a just bad , my second year was pretty good i did well . Now i took your idea on growing tomatoes and pollinated with the electric toothbrush , its amazing so for every flower has pollinated fruit everywhere . Just having a garden in south Florida or anywhere is always a learning process tanks for all of the great knowledge . So ill be watching . Have a great season .

The first year I grew yukons in my raised beds, I was so disappointed with the leggy, messy, scraggly foliage, that I swore I wouldn't grow them again. Then, I dug up my first potato... and I was hooked. There is nothing like a just-picked potato for dinner. I grow them every year now. So much fun to dig up in the fall. I grow them in a tightly fenced off area, to keep the foliage under control. Works great. This year I'm also growing baby red potatoes in a container. The stalk growth so far is looking good.

@@apollofateh324 aww thanks for asking!! Wonderfully! I got 8.5 pounds out of 5 seed Red Potiac potatoes. I was able to repeat and grow 3 crops of the taters in my 15 gallon bag. Super satisfied!! Shared with all of my friends. Did you grow any this past summer? How did yours turn out?

God knew we needed a Hardy food source. Potatoes are so versatile too. Fries, hash browns, scalloped, augratin, mashed, you name it. The one starch that trumps bread.

Hi Luke, love watching your channel. Last year I didn't have much luck with growing potatoes plus it can get expensive buying a lot of quality soil so I am trying something a little different this year. I am growing 4 varieties this year,(Adirondack Blue, Purple Viking, German Butterball and Yukon Gold) in 18 gallon rope buckets with holes on the bottom. I put down some shredded fall leaves that I saved (about 4-5 inches) in the bottom of each container. I then placed the seed potatoes on top of that and covered with a layer of cow manure. Then I layered with about 4 -5 inches of straw. The plants are coming up very nicely and the straw is helping retain the moisture as well. Planning on adding more manure and straw when they get a little taller. I have some trifecta on hand, is it too late to add? If not, about how much? You mentioned about 1 cup per 10 gallons so I am thinking maybe 1 1/2 cups per bucket. I AM trying to "grow big or go home" :-) Thanks

I would avoid manure because nitrogen grows leaves not potatoes. Many blessings everyone.

Thanks for talking about bag size and how many seed potatoes per bag. I saw a lot of videos where the size was not discussed and potatoes were cut in pieces. I ordered a lot of seed-potatoes very earlies to regulars and am now planning where to put all the plants I want to grow. I will definitely try the bag option and put a couple in a bed.
