This is so strange that the rain killed the whole outdoor crop. As a kid growing up in Soviet Union we planted potatoes in a communal field every year. It consisted of planting them out in spring, weeding them once mid-summer and digging them up in late summer/early autumn. That’s IT - no watering, treating, etc. The three occasions were bloody hard work, but we always got enough to last a family through a Siberian winter (used to bury them in a sandpit in the underground garage)

Because they were planted in soil, not in a container. There is enough water in the soil, but in containers you need to keep watering.

It seems like a lot has changed over the years. Gardening is done so differently these days. Back in the 70’s my dad used to just plow a large plot, throw seeds all through it and the veggies all just miraculously came up. Drought, heavy rains, fungus, disease, pests never harmed the garden. It makes me wonder why gardening has become so much more an effort in today’s world. 🤔 I know this is container gardening, but still, having to go through so much for so little seems strange.

I am so happy that you included the pictures of the different diseases that can affect potatoes because I could not figure out what took over my crop. All the leaves started dying and it broke my heart after they looked so healthy and beautiful. Love the video.

I've been using sawdust for years as part of my soil mix. I take a shovel of dirt, add a bunch of ashes and chunk charcoal, and then add a couple shovels of the sawdust. I get them right out from under my table saw, so I know exactly what is in there. It acts like peat for holding moisture, but also breaks down over time, adding more nutrients. I've also started adding a little StallDri to the mix to aid in drainage. I mix this all up in a wheel barrow. It's a little dry looking at first, but I have had good success with it for trees, and now, for veggies as well.

Thank you for your videos and thank you for not promoting brands or products and trying to sell us stuff! I appreciate the sawdust/coffee grounds mixture and the home made products you use as I am always trying to rig up my own garden mixtures to avoid buying very pricey fertilizer products. Growing food can get very pricey if you fall into the trap of buying all the products most of the gardening channels promote! Heading out to plant my seed potatoes in some grow bags right now. Thanks again

Great tutorial, as usual! Thank you for posting this! I'm sorry you lost so much due to the weather. Last year I found some burlap coffee sacks priced at $1 each. Several of them had an especially tight weave with nylon threads throughout, which seemed quite sturdy. I bought as many as I could, and used them to plant in. They worked beautifully, especially for potatoes, as I was able to fold them up and down as the potatoes grew. They're still holding up like new, and growing potatoes once again this year!

2018 was the first year I tried growing potatoes in pots. I used potatoes from the grocery store (Yukon Gold and generic white). I waited for chits. The same grocery store's floral department gave me a dozen or so large black pots that their flower deliveries come in. I drilled drainage holes in the bottom of the pots, put in some of my version of Mel's Mix then put in one sprouted potato and filled the pot up. Eventually, all of the pots saw green growth above the soil line. Well, in August, so did our local deer population which ate all of the greenery! So I dug out a hole, put in some more Yukon Gold sprouted potatoes and now in October have more green showing. So far, no deer raids.

We have deer roaming about our neighborhood - and I will be sure to keep my fence doors shut to protect my spuds! We used to have a raccoon but chased him away with ammonia smells. He overturned plants and pots, bit them and dragged them all over, for a time I thought we had a baby bear running riot every night.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew 2 жыл бұрын
What happened to the potatoes, after the deer cropped the greenery? I'd have lifted them. At the vey least you'd have had baby potatoes and, at worst, had seed potatoes for the following year.

Years ago, an old farmer told me the same thing, "grow potatoes in saw dust and they'll grow good!". I tried that for the first time last year, with a handful of seed potatoes. I have a place next to my cabin where I've cut firewood for many years. It has a thick mat of saw dust. I roped off a section with twine to keep the deer out and planted the potatoes. They did great in that saw dust! I hope to grow a much bigger patch this year.

Kayleigh Vulpis I start my seed potato’s in 4 inches of dirt in the bucket as the plat grows I add soil until the race between plant and soil reaches the top. Never cover all the plant. In the end the plant will over hang the bucket. I keep mine cut back to about 10 inches other wise they turn to vines and no potato growth

When planting in containers you don't need to hill up ! Fill your container one third full add your seed potatoes and fill all the way up leaving two inches from top ! They will grow all the way out ! This method produces more roots and more tuber's ! You only need to hill up when you sow directly into the ground ! I'm sixty eight years old and have used this method without failure! !!
