This video shares tips on how to grow raspberries at home, which can even be done in a container.
Raspberries, like blackberries, are in the rose family and like an optimal acidity of 5.5 to 6.5. Raspberries thrive at 5.5 to 6.5 soil ph levels.
Jules shares tips on growing raspberries at home and in a container including soil requirements and companion plants.

Thanks Randy. It will take time, but I will do my best to max out its production. I prefer inground, but the good thing about a container is more control. Over everything. Water, soil, ph, weeds. Plus. Damn I am getting old. Planted 70+ things last weekend, and most were seeds. My back is killing me, still. lol.

G Good info on this Jamie. I like the video challenge idea too. One thing folks may not realize about raspberries is they do not need full sun to produce fruit. So if someone has bright shade or good dappled shade they can still grow them. Great for the food forest because of that. As far as Rose vs Raspberry...Rose is the Rosa genus, Raspberry is Rubus, both are in the Rose family as are apples, pears, and Quince.

Great advice, Jules. I wait as long as possible each year for my first lawn cutting, which allows for the pollinators to do their thing. I've got clover and some other goodies that the pollinators seem to like.

G'day mate. I enjoyed this, especially as I am a huge fan of growing berries. Also like how you talked about actually growing stuff where you are to learn how it will grow... if that made sense... You obviously did. 😁 Good to chill and watch one of your vids mate (at 4am). I don't do it enough. All the best, Daz.

Thanks Daz. That philosophy was hammer into me from Amy at Crazed Family Gardens. The way I stated it here is only "part" of the philosophy. Basically, Amy, -> seed, to start, to plant, to harvest, to storage. You don't really understand the thing until you do it. Amy's a smart lady. Be well Daz and good to hear from you.

This is my first year growing raspberries and they are in a container. I set goals for fruit next year. They were two little sticks when I got them so I made a soil mix with coconut core and black cow and soil. They are now a foot tall which I think is good for planting the beginning of May. The only thing I don't understand is the when and what to prune this fall. If this was a old plant I guess if that stem had berries you cut it to the ground and the next year a new stem will grow up and I'd have berries on the new stem and then I should cut that at the end of the season. So it seems I should pick the fruit and cut it the same day so I don't forget who to prune? Yep, I need help 😊 Thank you for sharing
@JulesGardening
@JulesGardening Жыл бұрын
You can do it that way. Each year has primocanes and floricanes of course. You can cut them once all the fruit is done, but it might be better to wait until it is cooler so as not to introduce a disease. Last year, I just let it "do its thing" and it mostly died back on its own. This was the first year in the container. It came back big and strong. I will post a picture for you on my community page so you can see the result. Good luck Cassandra!

Are you saying Holley Tone to lower the PH? I will try and look it up.
@JulesGardening
@JulesGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Holly-tone from Espoma is 5% sulfur which lowers the PH. Great for anything that loves acid like Azalea, Blueberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, hydrangea, etc. Good stuff.

What's your drainage on your container? Holes on the bottom or the sides? Can your spell the word for the product you use for acidity in the dirt? Thanks Jewels. Clover is good for sure
@JulesGardening
@JulesGardening 2 жыл бұрын
That is a 10.5 gallon container with four punch outs on the bottom. They drain well. I have, hmm, an even dozen. Got them from Lowes. They are NOT BPA free, but those molecules are too large for the plants to absorb if they do leach, which I assume they do. The product is Holly Tone from Espoma. It is organic and designed to feed acid loving shrubs and plants in the spring and fall. It has suplhur in it to lower the ph of the soil. The NPK is, hmm, low, but not balanced. Something like 4-3-4. But it also has 5% or so suplhur. Happy gardening Kathleen. :)

Love the tips! While we are in berry lane, I have a question about blueberries. Will a single blueberry plant produce a ton fruit or is it better to plant several different varieties next to each other? Can you plant full size blueberry plants in May ( zone 7b)? Which variety is your favorite for taste?
@JulesGardening
@JulesGardening 2 жыл бұрын
I would plant two different types at a minimum. Even if it's claimed independent, anything does better with a pollinator. We have a granny smith apple tree but immediately added a golden for pollination for example. We don't have a favorite but if you are in a clay/piedmont area plant RabbitEye types. There are a LOT of those available. We started two last fall. One is "Robeson" which was developed by a fellow in our state and the other is a Pink Lady. Both are rabbit eyes. You can plant in spring. Generally, I like to plant in fall. It is cooler and less stress on the plant or shrub. Just remember to keep the water right through summer if you plant in spring. Don't let it dry out. It might survive, but that could be a permanent "stunted" outcome.
