How to Grow The Exquisite Clusia

There are 300 - 400+ different kind species of this fast growing shrub at 12 inches per year that's fast. They can reach an astonishing height up to 10 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide so plant your babies 4 to 5 feet apart. It is native to tropical Florida Keys in America, Southern Mexico, Southern Brazil it is a humid loving drought plant that lives in well drained sandy fertile soil. Yet it can be found at sea level in the Northern Andes. Basic Care Summary. A heat tolerant selection. Plant in a reliably sunny spot. Best in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly until established not necessary to feed but if so declined use 10-10-10. Prune to maintain desired shape You may find the Clusia in the form of a shrub, vine, or a small to medium sized tree (20ft). The Clusia has latex leaves and a wooden stem. An interesting fact on his is the wood is highly durable and used for roof construction. They love LOTS of bright light so make sure you plant them in full sun and that oh so tropical climate. Can be grown inside as a house pant and can cope with medium light levels. Keep the dirt moist at all times. Yet they are tough and resist drought periods. You can propagate fairly easily fast by seed or cutting. You will need to wear gloves when handling because the sap will irritate the skin. Please note that these cand spread as well if not kept well groomed.

Soil - Fertile, well-drained soil.

A fun fact is Clusia was named by Carl Linneus in honor of the botanist Charles de l'Ecluse.

@@reznacuffey7391 Set new plants 4 to 5 feet apart. They are a tropical hedge and do well in the drought. Growth Rate: 12 Inches per Year. Clusia is a low maintenance plant that has thick, leathery leaves and a low branching pattern which makes it a nice choice for a hedge. Use a balanced fertilizer such a 10-10-10 formula in spring, summer, and fall for healthy growth. They are invasive and fast growing. I hope this helps.

Yes as I. Are they young? If so they have not had time to get rooted really well in the earth. You should have covers them to protect them. Try with your nail and scrap the stems. If you see green great they are just dormant. You might expect them to be a bit late. Give them a season to adjust. If there is no green just keep scraping down the stem closer to the ground. If no green appears you have lost them. They may look dead but check under the protective bark by scraping it.

What is the proper way to trim a hedge of clusia? Where do I cut the branch, time of year to cut, how do I trim it to keep it bushy and not like a tree. My bush has overgrown and is straggly. The landscaper uses a machete knife, slicing leaves and branches to shape. It seems to work and the clusia does not seemed bothered by the milk white bleeding. Note the sap from this bush stains clothes a brown (plus Becky here said it is toxic)

Because many tropical plants are toxic, those of us in southern Florida have to be knowledgeable about selecting safe plants for our gardens. And, if children and/or pets frequent your garden, then you need to be extra vigilant of what's growing out there. It is one of the most poisonous of all common garden plants. The entire plant is poisonous. As for the shaping of it I would leave it to the landscaper. That is why you see them almost completely covered with clothing they know there are poison. If you want to do this your self you can use manual hedge shears or a power hedge trimmer to remove excess foliage. It's vital to trim new Clusia hedges and shrubs often to encourage healthy growth. Clusia hedges respond well to light trimming. I hope this helps you out, Just keep skin covered.

Yes you can plant this shrubbery if you have it in a good size pot and keep it groomed to shape it should do well an indoor area. It is a drought tolerant plant.

Hi every video on utube they don't say .here in florida the soil is acidic in ph so is it just sugar sand it's in or like the sod soil like on the pallet at home depot. If it's in sugar sand dig around plant approx one foot down and replace it with potting soil if using a spade shovel you need 10 to 20 pounds of soil .water often and deeply for 7 days on every other day .take sand and fling across grass or throw away

These plants rarely flower, other than in the warmest areas of Zone 10. Flowers are pale pink and appear in summer.

Remove all the lower leaves from the stem so that there are two bare nodes. Dip the end of the Clusia stem in rooting hormone. Plant in a container of moist, well-draining fertile soil. After a few weeks, roots should appear, and you can transplant the rooted Clusia cutting to your garden.

Lol, the name of the video is “how to grow Clusia” but she spoke more about diarrhea than how to grow the shrub. People want to know what kind of fertilizer is best, how far away to plant to create a privacy hedge, do you need top soil and how much, how often to water etc. But I do like the host, very friendly and super cute, just not informative.

I hate those freaking plants everyone is replacing them over Ficus hedges and it’s just made our job even tougher now but our clients have to pay double the price cause they are more work to trim and you can’t even barely mulch down the clipping you have to rake everything and pick it up like the old days double our work and time.
