As soon as the plants start to develop flower heads cut off the heads leaving only one plant per variety to flower and seed. Cover these 2 plants flower heads (before they begin to bloom) with fine mesh bags tied securely to the stock of the plant at the bottom. This is known as "bagging" and will prevent the plants from cross pollinating via insects. I will be making a video detailing this process once my plants are starting to flower.

If you live in cold climate as i do (northern europe) i suggest buying Nicotiana Rustica too, because that grows well in colder climate.

Well, that is a tricky question as most cigarettes are full of additives and flavorings to give them their particular flavor. Have ever noticed how cigarette tobacco usually has a raisin or even a hint of liquorish smell to it? That's not a smell tobacco has naturally. However, I can tell you most American cigarette blends are almost always a mix of Burly, Bright Leaf and sometimes Oriental (Turkish) type tobaccos. For instance KY Burly, VA Gold and a hint of Turkish Izmir is a very basic blend

Soil PH should be about 5.8 for best results. Anything much higher can hurt the growth a little. It is late in year to get started but you could always start a few plants anyway and get some practice to be better prepared for next year

The Wild Rustica variety has a VERY large amount of nicotine, Its actually used to extract nicotine for pesticides.

It is too late for me to start this year, but wow! This is just what a friend of mine and I have been discussing for the last year. Thank you and I will be following along with you on this. Is there a preferred PH for the soil when growing tobacco? Our soil is very very sweet, so I usually end up doing a lot of adjusting on my planting beds before I can plant anything in them.

I've heard Virginia gold tobacco is a pretty fast growing variety, Is this true? also would it be too late in the season to plant some seeds in the garden now?

QUESTION "If I were to plant some Virginia seeds in Northern California by June, do you think that I would able to get a decent harvest?" MY ANSWER "That would not leave you enough time for them to ripen or time to color cure. General rule: Plant indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. They take up to 2 weeks just to germinate. Then they need 3 months on average in the ground outdoors to mature. Then you need another 2 to 3 weeks of good warm weather to color cure. So 5 to 5 1/2 Months start to finish. Starting them in June would put you trying to color cure in November that is if they had time to ripen at all. You have to keep your first frost date in mind as well. One hard freeze will completely wipe out your plants and leave you with nothing but stalks of mushy withered leaves"

what is a strong type of tobacco
@DIYmonkey7 жыл бұрын
Oneida (AKA Nicotiana Rustica) has extremely high nicotine levels and is grown mostly for pesticide purposes. Can be lethal if used in large doses. Primarily used for smoking in very small amounts to boost the nic level of weaker tobacco verities. A safer alternative would be KY burly or TN burly

In your opinion is MD 609 a good tobacco to grow for making pipe tobacco out of?
@DIYmonkey7 жыл бұрын
MD 609 (aka Maryland Tobacco) will work fine for pipe tobacco as most tobaccos do as pipe tobacco derives most of its characteristics from treatment and added flavorings

Where can you buy a small amount of seed? I live near Charlotte NC and grew Tobacco long ago but can't find seed. I would like to buy some seed for pipe Tobacco. Nest question hoe do you keep the air cured tobacco from becoming brittle and falling apart when it has cured? My dad made his own chewing tobacco when I was a kid it was called twist tobacco.

Lethal! Really! Maybe I should pull this up and get rid of it. Pesticide? What a thing to grow for the first time. What do I do with this now? Sounds like it is not good for safe smoking at all.

Rustica tobacco was used by early native Americans to communicate with the spirits. Nicotine in high enough levels can be a hallucinogen www.thetobaccoseed.com/Original_Wild_Rustica1.html
