It popped up in my garden without me planting it. I’m so glad I didn’t pull it out thinking it is weed. Now, so tall and beautiful with deep purple flowers.

I always enjoy your videos. My neighbor gave me many plants from her beautiful garden and some of those plants were Verbena....she had no idea the name and I didn't either until your video! Thank you for this video!

Oh wow! What a wonderful neighbour. Glad you now know what they're called 😁💚

One of my favorite flowers. I have bonariensis it self seeds everywhere.

Yes, it really does but I thought I'd try my hand at sowing seeds since I was sowing the other verbenas. In all honestly, I haven't had much success yet but I'm going to give them time....

Finally, I was able to find this plant in the US by mail. Loved seeing this plant in Riga, Latvia on vacation last year. Purchased plants not seeds.

Brilliant - it's such a fantastic plant - I love it and couldn't be without it 😊

Yesl hardy in South Bucks but at 750 ft. in Westmorland (where ??) having every weather system known to Met., I have one. It's reappeared in a potted rhododendron, and will be treasured - in case it gives up its purple ghost; but thank you Annette.

Hi Wendy, gosh, I’m so glad to hear that it’s survived. Yes, definitely one to be treasured 😁

I bought seed of Verbena bonariensis "Vanity" this year. It's a newer variety that was an All-America Selection for 2022. I don't remember the details, but the seed is "primed", which means it has undergone some kind of treatment to make alternating temperatures unnecessary. I presprouted the seeds on a moist paper towel and got high, uniform germination in less than a week. No kidding. They started blooming a couple of weeks or so ago.
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Wow! That's sounds amazing. I haven't found primed seeds before.

@@cottoverdi They're advertised as growing to 2.5 feet tall. My plants are considerably taller, but still shorter than the usual Verbena bonariensis (I think). The seed source is Benary. Here's what their website says about the seed treatment: *In nature, dormancy is a survival mechanism preventing seeds from germinating under optimal climatic conditions to bridge an unfavorable season for seedling development. Depending on the species, this „deep sleep“ can last for months (usually the winter season), but high performance greenhouse production demand instant, fast and uniform germination. Benary ApeX seed delivers exactly that. We apply specific physiological treatments to ‘break’ this dormant state and ensure that the seeds germinate at their best possible rate.*

Great video and insight to the germination. I have boneriensis seeds to grow but haven't planted them yet. A cold poly tunnel is not the right place yet.
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, you could just scatter them in the garden - it depends how cold your area is still. Good luck 👍🏼🌱

@CottoVerdi thank you 😀 I'll try direct sowing. I'm in SW Wales. Sarah Raven has messaged today to say the plant's I bought are on the way. 🤣 don't you love it when you forget what you've ordered? 🥰

Can I just sprinkle them on the soil outdoors now given that they self seed? Packet only says indoors.
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Yes, they can definitely be direct sown now that it's warmer.

What a great, informative video. I’ll have to try the daily heat, then cold suggestion. My V bonariensis seeds have not yet germinated after a month. You did say up to 90 days for germination? I have more seed cold stratifying in my freezer. I may try them on a wet paper towel as someone else suggested. But mine aren’t “primed” or pelleted. Thank you!
@cottoverdi9 ай бұрын
Hi Pamela, I hope you have some luck with yours. Once you have bonarienses in your garden, you will always have some - it self-seeds so readily!

Thanks Annette, this is the first year I have grown Verbena. Hoping to propagate it. 💐 It's not that common in Australia where I am.

I bought seeds here in Sweden this year. Germination rate was probably closer to 80%. The seeds had been "prepared" which I guess is another word for being put away in cold temps for a month or two. Anyways.. no vigorous growth to be expected. Small plants which seems to take a long while before things get going. The seedlings stayed very small for quite some time and now when they're being transferred into somewhat bigger pots the roots where also very small. Ive read this on several pages that it's a plant which takes quite some time from seed to flowering plant and i second that. My plant look healthy but grows very slow compared to a tomato plant, nepeta or whatever really

80% is fab! Hope you have success 🌱

I've had major issues trying to germinate Verbena b. I'm 2 packs in so far😂 1 germinated perfectly in 2 days, about 100 failed, but I also have about 5 tiny little seedlings that aren't doing much
@cottoverdi10 ай бұрын
Hi Tony, verbena seems to take a while and can be very eratic - so some seeds may germinate one week and then you could wait a few more weeks for the remainder of the sowing to germinate. Do hang on to the seed trays - they should germinate eventually. Good Luck.

I get seedlings all around my garden so much easier to lift and move them as required, or even so direct, rather than attempt to sow in trays.
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Yes, they do seed so easily but if we don't have any plants already, then sowing them is also a great idea.

@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын

My verbenas always come back much thinner after a couple of years. What am I doing wrong?
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm not sure why that would be. But it's so easy to take cuttings so do try to propagate them and then you'll have fresh plants.

Freeze the seeds before you sow for a couple of weeks. It helps germination!
