I'm 35 and fighting a cancer. I was looking for a hobby and fell on one your video about drawing freely without judgment. It happens you start drawing in your late 30's which rings a bell for me. So i start drawing! Now it's been a week i'm playing with my pencil (don't have the courage to use a pen yet haha) with your help and other youtube channels and i have done things i would never imagine doing when i thought start drawing. It also fullfill me with pride and zen vibes.. Want to thank you for that, helps a lot in those dark days!

I've been watching you for a while. And I did not think I could draw. But I watched one of your videos about drawing something every single day. And no judgement if it was good or not, Sooooo the last 4 days I drew something in my sketch book. This has been the most freeing feeling in the world. And I actually was pretty proud of my accomplishment. The amazing thing is I learned a lot in this short period of time. Thank you. I have vowed to draw every single day in 2024.

I just did two blind contour drawings, one a stack of books, and the other a book end with a Fleur de Lis decoration. As you can imagine, they were hideous. I showed them to my wife and got a kick out of watching her debate in her mind whether to be honest or to say they looked nice. This was also the first entry in my first sketch book.

I have picked up and discarded drawing countless times. Each time I pick it up again, I'm reminded of how good it feels, though it's obvious my skills are non-existent. Your instruction is so compelling and fun, so here I am again. But also, I feel as if a good friend is speaking to me, which makes the experience all the better. Thank you for all the time you take to make us feel like something vital is about to happen. I'm ready to make this an integral part of my life, thanks to you.

Goodness!! I haven’t done ANY drawing for years but this takes me back to my college days when we did exercises like this. I remember two exercises that really helped me: using only a ballpoint pen and the other was to draw a subject without lifting the pen or pencil from the paper! Also drawing ONLY the spaces between objects. It’s about time I started drawing again! So glad I found you! Thank you so much 😊

I used to draw a little when I was a kid and took it up again during the pandemic shutdown. Then moved into watercolor, which I love. Decided to take a break from that frustration and go back to trying to improve my drawing skills. This exercise was a lot of fun and a real crack-up. It got me to wondering if this was how Picasso moved into abstraction😂 I keep a note on my art table that says, "Failure is the only way forward." It's a great reminder that mistakes are really important for learning and progressing. Thanks for all you do. I'm going to check out your books and start reading them. You provide such encouragement!

I remember when I did this for the first time about a year ago, and it DID blow my mind. What I drew actually looked like what I saw. It's a fun thing to do! :) I remember when I was relearning how to walk and had a horrible time. The Doc told me to stop thinking about it and just do it. It was hard, but when I did that, I was actually able to make steps that were almost normal.

I’m legally blind and I have one eye that is low vision but I pretty well have a go at anything artsy . Even if it looks cartoony or simple I don’t care cause art is for me. I feel like I’ve done some work cause I’m retired and have days to fill. I’m drawing landscape on cards and I think it will be a hobby business but if people don’t buy my drawings that won’t be a problem either cause they’re for me first and always. I didn’t think it possible to feel confident and not need validation . But after five years of drawing and trying most media I’ve settled in what feels right for me. Still I am learning more and more from videos like this . Thank you for teaching what you know 🙏❤️

Wow, this one was amazing! I was expecting total mess on my page, but it was very surprising for me to see that some parts of my countour was pretty accurate (it looks way more right than if I draw it by looking on an object). Especially all sort of curves and angles. Of course lines was not connected on right points and many parts was all over the place. But I realized, that my intention to draw right curves and angles with open eyes was kind of "math-driven approach". Then I tried to draw one simple object (my Casio F-91W) that I drew couple of days ago in an usual way, but this time I was allowing my eyes to catch that curves and corners and only then my hand was able to move a bit and so on. Results was amazing (for my close to zero experience in drawing). It was hard to believe that "blind drawing" method can do anything instantly, but it did. Not sure if I will be able to keep catching that difference between eye vs math kind of vision, but I wish I'll able to improve it further. Thanks for this interesting idea and especially for the explanation how and why it should work. These eyes-brain-hand connections that you explained here and in the previous video helped me to understand something very important about how drawing works and this is not my "math" approach. Example with driving a car was very helpful too!

Blind contours are so good butI do it with sketch pens just that when you draw the various parts you actually change the colour of the pen, it may be a bit of cheating but just start at the place you ended. That seems quite nice for me.

i have a room full of art and craft supplies mostly new in box. Now 2023 is about to end, I want to break these supplies out of boxes to put them in use. It does feel terrifying to burst my ego bubble (NOT being a creative person). But the control in line drawing and repeated patterns and shapes surely will get better with practice. Sullying pricey watercolor paper and mix media sketchbooks with terrible painting and drawing I have to get used to. Unused expensive art supplies and leave them to be discovered by those who have to clean out my place after I die is a thought that shames me to be honest.

If you need a rationale: Unused art supplies eventually go bad and you'll have to throw them out. Might as well use them.

What does it say about your brain if the left side of your blind drawing looks pretty good, but the right side of your drawing is consistently too close to the center? Thanks for making these videos!!
@ABirdWoman Жыл бұрын
Blind contour drawing trains your brain to trust your eyes… because a lot of times when you are looking at something to draw, your brain wants to get in the middle of it and create it, but blind contour gets the right side of the brain to take over from the left side.

Good tip thumbnail sketches. Just black outlined figure or things. The Brian tends to work better when shapes go missing. Why? Because it’s not overly complicated. Most artists use this element. As Well as blind drawing. Look at the image and take it away. Trains the muscle in the Brain. Mostly the right which I think houses critical thinking skills.

No, you are wrong. It is not "your body knows somehow how to walk" - you had to learn it and learn it hard. You had to learn every single move, every single twist of your muscles (!) of your feet, your knees, your hips, all your body, and you have failed a lot. And you needed a significant help from your parents to learn how to walk and don't hurt yourself. It's just you don't remember it, because it was long time ago. The same goes with driving a car, drawing, skiing, sword fighting, building a helicopters, or any other possible skill or craft. You have to learn it from someone who shows you exactly what to do when to do and how to do. Olny when you achieve some more advanced level of skill, then you can learn more and master that skill just by yourself. If you manage to learn any skill "just by trying", it means you are really talented at it (and have some luck to guess the right things right away with making litte to no mistakes). edit: NO, my hands do not know what to do. And that is my point from the begining. It has to be learn somehow, yet nobody wants to tell me how to learn it.
