Because of the long life of these centuries-old trees (a healthy oak can live up to 1000 years!), but also because of its usefulness, the people honored and glorified this tree in their myths and religions, dedicating the oak to their main god. In Greek mythology, oaks are mentioned very often. The oak was the sacred tree of the ancient Greeks-the sacred tree of Gaia and later of the almighty Zeus. The oak was a tree dedicated to the god of lightning because the tree's resistance to lightning and even perhaps its attraction have been known since ancient times.
The oak tree was the sacred prophetic tree of the Oracle of Dodoni, the Dodonian Zeus, the oldest oracle in the world. Regarding the establishment of the prophet of Dodoni, Herodotus (History. B, 54-57) mentions that two priestesses of Thebes in Egypt were sold as slaves, one to the Libyans and the other to the Thesprotians. The first founded the oracle of Ammon Zeus in the oasis of Siua, and the second built, under an oak tree that grew by itself, a sanctuary of Zeus in Dodoni.
According to the legend, from the Holy Figure of the Oracle of Dodoni that had the ability to prophesy the future, the goddess Athena took the piece of wood that she placed in the bow of Argos during the Argonautic campaign. It is no coincidence that etymologically the Latin and scientific name of oak, Quercus, means that from this tree the gods can answer questions (quaere in Latin, queries in English) about the future.
