I think the spray up is the major reason so many people, when asked, will say they people despise Poodles. Not that I find it "cruel" - I find it to be a sign of obsession with artificiality. Of course there are much worse things than doing this to a dog (like "rehoming" older show dogs - THAT'S disgusting). The UKC allows for the Modified Continental (sometimes called the Historically Correct Continental). I think the AKC should move in that direction and at the same time disallow any use of hair spray to keep the long floppy hair on the head, neck and upper back to stand up.

The spray is made specifically for poodles and it's only done before a show, dogs don't show every single day, they only show a handful of times each year. They retire from showing when they are about 3-4 years old because it is cruel to breed dogs when they are old. Rehoming retired show dogs is not disgusting, a breeder can't keep every damn dog they have, they would have way too many to care for. Each dam has 1-2 litters, then they retire, usually at age 4-5. Poodles live around 13 years, can you imagine how many dogs the breeder would have if they kept every single dog? The dogs would be neglected if they kept all of them! The dogs are rehomed to proper owners to live out their lives as pets, they don't just dump the dogs at shelters, they have applications for their dogs and if you do not meet their standards, you will not get their dog. Usually the breeder of the dog will have a co-owner for each dog, when the dog retires, it usually goes to the co-owner. The breeder is a mentor to the co-owner and teaches them how to show, train, groom, feed, care for, and other things for their dog.

I feel so bad for show dog's.. NOTHING is about the dog, it's all about the greedy, abusive, waste of air breathing humans pride and vanity. I think the AKC and Westminster should be closed down and these Show dog owners should be flogged and never allowed to own ANY animals again. Forcing your dog to sit there like that while spraying hairspray all over it.. Wow, you ARE all kinds of evil and greedy. You people are seriously sick..

No ones forcing a dog to do anything lol, in fact this dog isn't even tethered to a table its laying down comfortably. And as a groomer I WISH peoples pets behaved as well as this. I do aggressive, wild, and crazy dogs whos owners think their behavior is not only acceptable but cute. But its only cute until it cases an injury and then its our fault. As for AKC/Westminster closing, that's just ridiculous. Their goal is to help produce not only beautiful but sound in temperament and genetic health. If we didn't have a canine registry, backyard breeders/puppy mills would be so much more rampant than they already are. More dogs would be dying from preventable genetic disease. I suggest you going and watching and talk to people to realize that they love and care for their dogs more than the average pet owner. Spend some time in our industry and your views would change so dramatically. But until you do. You'll never understand.

Misplaced sympathies. This lovely girl has never known a moment of want, fear, or cold. She's well fed, clean, exercised, adored. I'm an owner handler. I make zero money showing dogs. I spend money on vets, entry fees, dogs toys, dog beds, etc. I enjoy the time I spend with my dogs, they enjoy their time with me. While I'm brushing they sleep. People truly in the know want to come back as show dogs. I'm sorry you are so misinformed.

Show dogs only do this for SHOWS! They don't do this every damn day, they do this a few times a year until they are about 3-4, then they retire. Showing is about the dog, that is the whole point LMAO. Showing dogs is NOT greedy, it takes about 50-150k each year for each show dog, poodles are one of the most expensive due to their grooming. The dog isn't being forced, it could jump up and run away if it wanted to. Poodles are groomed when they are about 4-6 weeks old, they have to be groomed every 3 weeks or else they will get very matted. The face, bum, and paws must be shaved often or else they will get infected. The chin rest keeps the dogs head at a comfortable position so they don't have to hold their heads up and strain, the rests are padded and most poodle I've seen fall asleep during grooming. The hairspray is dog safe and made specifically for dogs, do some basic research before you comment.
