Thanks l’onda for this video. i wasn’t sure my 9 days old rescue pigeons could eat a pigeon seed mix yet and in which size, gave it to them today after seeing your video and they loved it, didn’t get as much air in their crops as they would with semi-liquid formula and they felt full much faster. Bless your heart!

I use the baby chick food from walmart, and grind put a lot of eater to mix it so its like porridge and feed them withy finger till they can eat them self than I give them small bird seed, move to a cage.I plan to let them fly free nut, I am waiting till the weather is warmer at night, so they are not freezing out side and starfing because they used to have food all this time.

Thank you so, so much. Since I was a kid I’ve always shied away from attempting to rescue baby birds because they always die and it hurts my soul. Four days ago my dog found a little mourning dove chick on my patio. Not sure how many days old he is, but he barely has little pin feathers and fits completely in the palm of my hand, so I’m guessing no more than a week old, if that. I searched and searched for the nest but was unsuccessful. Then several hours later another little guy just appeared in the exact same spot, and again I searched unsuccessfully for the nest. We have Cooper’s hawks here and doves seem to be at the top of their list of birds on their menu, so it’s possible something happened to their mama. Regardless, I had two babies on my hand that needed attention, so I decided to give it a go on feeding them, thinking that it would entail giving them a bowl of water and throwing some seeds in with them and hoping for the best. When I first watched this video I was fascinated but thought I could never do this. But now with two very hungry chicks I simply had no choice. I scrabbled to get the right food and utensils and then with great care and no small amount of trepidation, I just went for it. The first two feedings were a bit clumsy for the birds and for me, but the job got done. I am SO happy to report that both birds are doing well and I am still shocked at the fact that I am able to syringe feed them with no problem. The first time was indeed very scary-I just didn’t want to hurt these tiny creatures in any way. But now all three of us are used to the routine. I have so much more confidence in myself and the little ones don’t struggle at all when I pick them up because they know a warm meal is on the way! Now I need to figure out when to switch to the bag of grains. I’m hoping they will show me when it’s the right time. They are growing so rapidly so my guess is that it will be soon. This means so much to me, and I cannot thank you enough for having posted this video as a reference for me to know what to do. I am determined to get these guys to fledge, with the hope they will stick around and make nests of their own one day, bringing generations of joy to my home and garden. I’m writing this long comment with the hope that others who may be reticent to even try such a rescue will be motivated to give it a go. The reward for success is certainly worth it!

thanks for additional info. my vet (not extreme pro avian expertise) advice too little food and i suspected it wasn't enough so i thicken the oatmeal (3rd feeding since rescue). but i did learn to check the crop. but i believe it is old enough (7+days) to eat seeds so i'll be getting a bag at least.

Hello, i have resently found a wounded pigeon chick and this video helped me be able to feed him but could you please tell me how im i supose to give them water? (he seam to be a bit older than the first ones you feed in your video)
@MellifexFarm4 жыл бұрын
I would offer him a bowl of seed and a bowl of water, if he is older than the ones in this video he should be able to at least try to start self feeding/drinking. Giving water orally (aside from the water in the handfeeding mix) can be dangerous so its best to let them figure out drinking themselves.

I rescued a pigeon that seems to be too young to fly upwards (can flap about and glide forward but that's about it). I don't know how old it is, but it refuses to eat. It didn't have much of an issue with drinking. I hope tomorrow it will be rested enough to begin eating.

I just feef them with my finger with the baby chicken food from Walmart, I mix with water and feed them with my finger 2x aday, they grow so rapidly and I pur a lamp to keep th warm in the room and put old towel and put paper towel on top so I van change every day with the clean one, now they are adult pegeon ang star mating to each other, but it still cold winter time, and I just let them fly around the house about two to three hours every evening time to night time, and they go to bed in their cage, the also like to take a warm bath in a big bowl that I put on my counter top so the can enjoy soak them self in that bowl, its fun to see them every day, we are in California high desert area.

Instead of this seed mix i used budgerigar( i think this is the name of the small parrot) seed mix for juniors, contains 3 types of millet seeds, cereals, some kind of egg flakes(10%) and also it says some type of sand/very small rocks i think used for the digestion. The pigeon has all his feathers so it is bigger than the smaller pigeons you fed the seeds too. I also tried to feed him a baby mix but he did not eat those, but the seed mix he went crazy for like in your video. You think this type of food will be good for him? I’ve had a small pigeon at one point and he did not make it unfortunately :( so i dont want that to happen again. Also if i soak the seeds in water like you did, do i still need to give him water extra?
@MellifexFarm3 жыл бұрын

Question: How old are your pigeons when you get them? Or, when do you start hand feeding them? I have a day old baby and he can be a challenge to feed because of his size, so do you have any tips? (First time pigeon parent - his name is Dodo)
@MellifexFarm2 жыл бұрын
I get my pigeons as adults and only ever handfeed if it is necessary. Pigeons are extraordinarily difficult to raise from hatch, and do very poorly health wise if they do not get their parents crop milk and the probiotics it gives them.

This is a really helpful video, thank you ! But I'm wondering why you need to do this rn since the parents of these babies are still around, do they not feed them enough ?
@MellifexFarm4 жыл бұрын
I pulled all 4 babies for handfeeding this season due to aggression from one of the pairs. This way I can guarantee they get fed well and dont get beat up by other marauding pairs trying to take over their nestbox.
@user-sf6bd5no6m4 жыл бұрын
Let's be honest. They could have just built something to section marauding pairs easily from the other pairs of parents who would naturally want to feed their babies. It's because they want an unnatural separation from their parents to usurp the baby rearing experience because babies are cute, and breeders want ultimate dependency of pigeon babies on humans not other pigeons, so as to make sure the pigeons imprint and would have no independence of their own. Like it's what breederd do. I'm. NOT SAYING it's bad, I'm stating actual facts
@MellifexFarm3 жыл бұрын
@@user-sf6bd5no6m .......I do not encourage handfeeding as it imprints babies and leads to behavioral issues down the line. This was for their safety. Its incredibly weird of you to make these assumptions about a stranger on the internet. You don't know me, my set-up, or my practices. Kindly fuck off.

If I put the seeds in his mouth myself and he swallows, he vomits after a few hours or the day after and the seeds are not digested. I don't know what the problem is, why he can't eat by himself, why he vomits and why the seeds are not digested!! Do you have any advice for me please? I'm having a really hard time with him.
