I loved this video! Truly fascinating. Could you please make a video where you show how to layout the shadow? Like the angles, where to place them, and how to divide between the lighter and darker shades? Your workmanship is impeccable! 💛💙🖤

Thanks, this one was a synthetic from handovers uk. I've swapped them over for some sable brushes now though and way prefer them. Will do a video on brushes soon!

I love these letters. I really like the shading, would be a cool way to blend two colors on the face. Like if the bottom half was orange and top half yellow and the orange went over the yellow or vise versa

Yes they had that a lot with carnival lettering. Can look really great on certain modern serif typefaces too

It's such a small world! I was just telling a friend about this exact technique of shading just two days ago! The final looks great man. Also, the graffiti artist side of me would have taken the already "shaded" blue and added a bit more black to it. That is the color I would chosen to outline the piece with. And that's where the brand new thin brush comes in!!! You can lay the thinner black as a second outline? Just a different approach and solely my opinion. I love the close up on the letter P. It really shows the newer audience what the brush should look like when going around a tight radius like that. You've definitely had practice! In summation, great job! Looking forward to the next one and I'll be sharing this with everyone... Not just the guy I was trying to teach a couple days ago! Thanks again for sharing! Cheers
@theletterhead2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Chris! That's a nice idea for the shading and outline. The funny thing is, when filming I work under lighting and the darker blue looked almost like a dark grey. Lo and behold, the next day it looks barely different! 😅

I’m enjoying your videos. Great work. Keep it up! One thing I’ve notice is you like to put the shade on the right and I was always taught for block letters the shade should fall to the left. Just a tradition I’m sure but interesting.
@theletterhead2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth, that's really interesting. Was there a reason as to why you was always taught that? I've always thought a reversed shadow looks like odd. Well on specific type styles anyway.
@kennethhenderson56442 жыл бұрын
@@theletterhead I am not exactly sure of the reasoning but I do know for script lettering then the shade would lay to the right for easier legibility. It’s one of those things I never thought to ask 😅

@@theletterhead my grandfather said it takes fewer brush strokes to shade to the left and saves time 🤔🤷🏼♂️

Is there a general rule as to the degree of the angles? So you achieve that nice width drop shadow on the sides of the lettering. Fantastic video, thank you!
@theletterhead3 ай бұрын
Generally no, as long as it visibly makes sense. Some can be more of a perspective shadow that changes the angle. But 45 degrees is fairly simple and has a nice effect

Excellent work. As a retired sign writer I can really appreciate the quality of your work. If I can find some old photos of my work, from the 70’s/80’s, I would love to email them to you, if you are interested. ps, love the sound tracks. Was the first track from J. Dilla? 👍

Thanks for the kind comment John. I'd love to see some pictures, send them to theletterhead@outlook.com Unfortunately I'm not sure who made the tracks, as they are royalty free provided by my video editor.

Thanks for sharing great stuff, maybe you could show how to go about doing the template or how you draw out the design in the first place, it seems like every video about sign writing misses out the part of layout of the lettering and skips to the painting bit, anyway keep on keepin' on bro great channel.

Do you have a brush choice and possibly a loading video, in my very limited experience, I've understood the thinning n brush loading is 90%+ of doing the work correctly.

Do you have to wait for each color to dry or is it okay to apply the next color when it’s tacky?
@theletterhead2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I would recommend it being touch dry if is it going directly over the existing paint. But if it's next to it then it should be fine.
@theletterhead2 жыл бұрын
It will dry okay though. I've had to do it in the past. And it has been fine once dry.

I like your work but can't watch your videos - that 'music' is awful. In a world where we spend so much time listening to looped trash on a phone line while queuing we can do without listening to the same rubbish for entertainment! There are plenty of sources for decent, royalty free tracks or you could use AI to generate something, Or you could just speak, that'd cost you nothing.
