Lovely project!! I like the way you join the threads to start a new one. Instead of stab stitching (where you put the needle in and pull the thread all the way through each time), you could do a traditional running stitch where you weave the needle up and down several times to gather four or five stitches at a time and then pull through. With that method you always work from the top. So starting from the top, putting the needle down, up, down, up, down and up and then pull through… it’s hard to explain with just words. Maybe that will help someone though. 🙂

Yes!! This is so helpful, Kara - I feel like I showed a longer route and this would help tremendously. Thank you for your insight :)

@@RooneySewingPatterns you’re welcome!! I forgot to mention that when you do it the way I described, you either need to use a quilting hoop or bunch it up in your hand. I like to just bunch it up and hold it. There are helpful videos if you search something like “big stitch hand quilting without a hoop”

I wish I’d found this while my daughter was pregnant! What a lovely gift it would’ve been at her shower. I think I’ll make it soon though.

I unfurl, untangle, separate skeins into strands if need be, and wrap on scrap card. Also running strands over real beeswax keeps thread needlework smooth. Like regular embroidery, using two or three strands of floss can be as effective as the whole floss, as far as strength and design. Thrifty too. Those quilts were made of softest pieces of old Saris, sometimes 3-7 layers, depending on use, cotton, linen and silk! There was nothing wasted. Great presentation!

This was just so relaxing to watch. I would've liked it more if I could've seen the finished larger blanket you made in the video though. Like a 'here's what i made earlier' type thing, just to give a better idea how it turns out

If you go back to the first minute of the video there is a good shot of the quilt with the baby laying on it. Right about 45 seconds in.

This is perfect! I’ve been looking for a sewing project that has machine and hand stitching to teach my granddaughter. I have lots of 100% white linen from a thrift store that I’ll coffee dye and batting left from a quilt I took apart. I’m glad you mentioned drawing lines with a chalk pencil because I’ll do that for her. ❤️

Do you think something like this would work over a patterned fabric too? Love the video very helpful for getting started and your calm instruction is awesome for a beginner (like me) who gets a little overwhelmed by everything when getting started or choosing a project!

Oh I think it would look beautiful with patterned fabric! I'm so glad it was helpful for you, I can't wait to see what you create :)

Thank you so much for showing us such a wonderful hand stitching quilt. Do you mind telling how much of a fabric did you use to make a crib size quilt please !!!

Thank you! :) I used two yards for this project - it measured about 36x54 inches.

Hi Courtney! Thanks for the tutorial, I’m excited to get started. Do you prewash the linen blend fabric before sewing?
@RooneySewingPatterns3 жыл бұрын
Hey Erin! Pre-washing and then ironing is always a great idea. Sometimes I’m too impatient and skip it :)

Can these stitches, the vertical ones, be done with a sewing machine?
@RooneySewingPatterns2 жыл бұрын
Hi Maria! Great question, I imagine if you lengthen your stitch length to the highest you can take it it could give a similar effect. It may look more like a traditional quilt that way? I think Kantha quilts receive their character from the thicker embroidery thread and the stitches made by hand are hard to replicate. With that said, it’s always worth a try and you may find a beautiful end product can still be achieved by machine!

How many yards would you recommend for an adult size?
@RooneySewingPatterns2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Depending on how big you want it, you may want five yards to have a large throw blanket size. This would allot for 2.5 yards for the front and 2.5 for the back. It would end up measuring around 50x60 inches.
