For any other new hedgehog owners watching, these tips really do work! Another thing I have found helpful in addition to his advice has been to put your hedgehog on the couch (with some towels on top of the sofa to prevent them from peeing/pooping on it or burrowing in between the cushions) every night when they’re active, place some food (preferably dried worms) on the couch, and sit next to them. Naturally, they’ll be bothered at first, but once they emerge from their ball, they’ll start to explore, go for the food, and will likely try to burrow under your arms, legs, and back. Whenever your hedgehog tries to approach you, try not to make any sudden movements. Aim to bring them out every night when they’re active for at least an hour and over time, they’ll gradually become more comfortable around you.

Had to stop by and let you know. Tonight (day 4) was the first time she relaxed in my arms. Spikes laid flat and she let my get under her belly and pick her up, even without the need for the towel. Progress I could not have made without the help of this video. Thanks... So hopefully now she will become more and more relaxed around me, so that soon my children can also learn how to handle her properly.

They do not live wild in my country. They would not survive outside. The choice is keep them as pets, or, let them all die off. I choose to give them a good life. Now, wild animals should never be taken from their home and put in a cage. Only captive bred animals should be pets.

TOP TIP. If for any reason your hedgehog does bite you (which as was pointed out in this video, that is pretty rare), gently pushing towards them usually gets them to let go. If you freak out, your heggy will probably panic and keep holding on

I used to work with an education hedgehog at my zoo, and I gotta say, this is a really good video. Very easy for hedgehog owners to understand, well done! My only suggestion would be to combine the treats you mentioned with touching. It's important (as you stated) to give her treats outside her home to help her make the association between being taken out of her hab and delicious snacks/good times, but if you don't touch her during these feeding sessions she won't make an equally positive association with touching. She'll definitely come round to touching eventually with what you described, but touching will serve as a stronger secondary reinforcer (something like petting, which she doesn't need but will learn to enjoy) if you pair it on occassion with mealworms or superworms. Secondary conditioned (ie taught) reinforcers like tactile/touching should virtually always be paired with primary reinforcers at first (something an animal needs such as food) when being introduced in almost every situation. She'll be jumpy at first but will quickly realize that every time she jumps, she's having to wait longer between gorging herself on hedgehog snacks! Eventually she'll calm down and stop jumping as you touch her, as touching is now associated with very good hedgehogy things :) Thanks again for these videos, they're great for helping people learn how to enjoy their prickly (often surly) little friends!

Xtoriexs can I ask how you’re getting on with him? I bought one months ago and he’s still like this until this morning at bath time, it was a miracle for us! He was so calm and relaxed he didn’t seem to be bothered about me till I put him back in his bed then it was back to square 1 again! X

I caught 3rd one today, first 2 released to my other farms. My dog got injured So I caught them. Gave him a bath in pool. Good swimmer but it can't come out, may die , then made him familiar with dog, released at the same place where I picked it.

I thought this was every hedgehog?!? LOL. I rescued a wild hedgehog who was lost from her mum and was approx 1-2weeks, even 1 and a half weeks old, more likely. A baby, had mange and i had to cure that first. Now she’s a beautiful young lady hedgie, no longer curls into a ball when picked up and overall super tame. I thought this was normal behaviour until you get them out of the cage, because its like u chillin in ur room and someone forces you outside to play, u will be grouchy at first. Plus daytime is nighttime for them and if they’re sleepin and u wake em up, give them some space and time!!!! I fell in love with her immediately and took her in, but had to learn everything about them from scratch as i knew squat about hedgehogs. Especially treating mange on my own. Lots of love, persistence and dedication, never giving up and true unconditional care, not just when you are happy with them and everything is sunshine and rainbows. For example, they poop a lot!!!!!

Hi again! Loving your videos. I ended up buying a hedgehog! Buy mine is aggressive. So strange, the first two days I had her she was alright to hold. Now she just curls up! Is this normal? She is only 6 weeks old. Going to use tips you mention in your video. My concern was she was fine the first two days then just suddenly changed
@earthling198411 жыл бұрын
6 weeks is really too young for a hedgehog to be separated and sold. that is half the problem. keep spendning time and over the next few weeks or months he/she should calm down.
@reabo11 жыл бұрын
Earthling1984 hmm, that isn't good. She is eating on her own. When should she of been separated from her mother? You should do a video on what to look for and tips for buying a hedgehog. I know I and others would benefit from something like that :)
@earthling198411 жыл бұрын
I have videos about 'before you buy a hedgehog'. I believe I mention in at least one of them the age they should be sold at. When I bred hedgehogs, I kept them with mother till 8 weeks, then at 8 weeks kept the boys together separate from the females who were also kept with the mom till 12 weeks, then sold.
@inconspicuousmoose10 жыл бұрын
reabo Honestly 6-8 weeks is fine. Don't worry about it. Just give her lots of love. Our hedgehog was the same way, we got her just under 7 weeks and she was very friendly and excited the first day she got to our new home, but then got very defensive and frightened for a couple weeks after. That's normal. Be sure to take her out at least once a day! You can start with shorter sessions, then longer and longer as you go. If she hisses/pops/clicks when you take her out, resist the urge to put her back in!!! If you always put her back in when she does that, she'll start to associate that behavior with getting put back in her "safe zone" before she can even learn that you don't want to hurt her, so she'll hiss and pop all the time. Let her settle down in your hands and be very still for a while, letting her sniff around to get used to you. When she's perfectly calm, you can put her back in her cage whenever you wish.

Brennan Spicer Thanks alot Brennan. She is definitely getting better now. In the middle of trying to litter train (if it's even possible). Did a bit more research too and you right that 6-8 weeks is fine also. The woman that I bought her off is a breeder so I guess she knows what she is doing. Everyone seems to have their on own preferences when a baby hog should leave its mum. Which I found interesting

I'm not an expert on hedgehogs but your hedgehog is lacking a decent amount of space for a cage, not to mention the wheel, hedgehogs need to exercise, cuz that's what they would do in the wild they are running all the time, or at least they walk a lot. I'm not sure if it's ok for her to be butting that cardboard house, but u should prevent that anyway
@earthling19848 жыл бұрын
Like you began with, "I (you) are not expert". Should leave it there.
@mariacasas0118 жыл бұрын
+Earthling1984 I'm not trying to shade you or Sth I'm just saying you should have a larger enclosure for your hedgehog as a well as a wheel, it's important for them to exercise, you can try connecting two bin cages to gain some space, the rest is good , your video is really helpful
@mariacasas0118 жыл бұрын
+mariacasas011 it's just a friendly advise, and it's for the hedgehog well being
@zomkayy8 жыл бұрын
He is 100% right though. You don't have a wheel, they run miles on the wheel. It also helps with their attitude. Secondly, Aspen is bad for hedgehogs. It can carry mites and it has wood dust. You are giving hedgehog advice. Yet you're not properly taking care of that one.
@earthling19848 жыл бұрын
+Zomkay Aspen is not bad. I have used aspen o er 10 years with over 50 hedgehogs. Not a single illness in my hogs and never once mites. Sorry, you are wrong. I find aspen to be best bedding choice from my tons of experience.

Got my first pet, new hedgehog owner. I watched almost all your videos, they were extremely helpful. Also asked a lot of questions and did quite a bit of research. I'm onto about month 5 with my little bud. I have a male hedgehog. I try to take him out everyday, he's just SOOO scared. Not angry, just very scared. Even little noises scare him and I feel bad. Plus, I'm never able to fully hold him without a towel, because he has abnormally sharp and thick quills. I love him so death and take super good care of him. Any more tips you could offer? I haven't put a shirt in his cage for my smell yet either. I could try though.

+dizzyallaround96 Don't get scared holding him without a towel. The spikes won't penetrate you skin. It's like holding a cactus. It'll make your hands felt like it penetrated because he anointed his spikes. But it's not anything bloody and dangerous. When I wanted to hold my hedgie for the first time and search the internet on how to do it. The internet said exactly "JUST DO IT!" and I just did it. And I was able to hold him. lol

I watched this video 2 years ago when I got a male hedgehog. Mine was pretty much like the one in the video. I can't let it loose around me because I figured my cats would bother him and get him even more scared, so I took the habit of closing the bedroom door where his viv is and interacting with him for about 15 to 20 minutes everyday. He tolerates me a lot more today, but I can't say he's become more sociable. He hisses most of the times I stroke him and is always looking for a dark place to hide. If I hold him he will try to jump away, and if I hold him with the belly up he flails desperately. It's still a pretty cool pet to have, but I envy those owners whose hedgehogs play around, calmly take a bath etc. Also my hedgehog lost all his teeth somehow and now eats only wet food.
@earthling19846 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you interact often. Weird he lost all his teeth. Even my hedgehogs that lived over 8 years had all teeth still. Did you feed wet food often? I always fed dry food.
@luisgentil6 жыл бұрын
@@earthling1984 I always fed him dry food. Then one day I noticed that when he was anointing with my hand's scent he couldn't grab anymore and it was just gums. Then I noticed that he wasn't eating much if his food, so I started soaking his dry food in wet food broth. He's doing fine but I wish I knew what caused this.
