I have hung literally hundreds of doors, if not thousands and the best advice I can give is covered here - start with the farthest away! My reason is it takes me a door to dial-in (my first one is the one most likely to contain an error) so you do not want that door in the lounge!!!!! This guy knows his onions and I love that he shows ways out from error which we chippies continually hide/repair!!! LOL! REMEMBER THIS: A professional is NOT someone who makes no mistakes - it's someone who LEAVES no mistakes!!!

The problem is I've never been shown on kitchens, the little tricks so I have been youtubing and learning! Without doubt I have raised my game on kitchens as a direct result of learning from others decent enough to share! I will start offering my own videos very soon! I've been on the tools 34 years so far and will definitely start sharing! I bought myself a Mafell track saw about 3 years ago - WOW! Game changer or what!

@@thetallcarpenter we knew no different lol, young lads don't even tidy the doors up after hanging them, the iris and trsck marks etc, as i do with a number 5 plane that i always use hanging doors, had a comment recently from a younger joiner about me using a hand plane like calling me old timer and i reminded him that he also should have 1 to clean up doors when finished, thats if he knew how to use it 😜

Something to look out for is that gap between the two leafs on the butt when there set parallel to each other , sometimes ( on mainly cheaper butts ) they can vary one having a slightly bigger gap than the other if this is the case fit the one with the bigger gap at the bottom as when the door is swung the weight of it tends to want to crush the bottom butt and stretch the top ( for want of a better description) that sounds very pedantic but in my experience it can make a difference to that hinge side gap , if it’s done the opposite way that just extenuates the problem of the gaps running out of parallel

I fitted the holdenby oak in my house recently They are lovely with two coats of osmo and a decent chunky handle I notice the same with the gaps the hinge style has a tighter gap than the lock.

We were trained right back in the day that's for sure. So many "Carpenters" today faced with an irregular jamb just bung the door in and it fits where it touches. Your door process, minus the fancy jig, is exactly the same as mine. When it was all chisel cut I was taught to put a chamfer cut on the lining side hinge cut out. So the back edge of the hinge was slightly deeper. To stop butt binding with some of the big headed slotted screws coming together. Also the order of jobs you work to. Exactly the same as mine. Here everyone puts the stops on then does the locks. I can't do it. I need the locks in so I can correctly set my stops. There was a reason why we were taught as we were. Tried and tested for generations. When quality was more important than speed.

Another great video, DEL,,very informative, (as an retired joiner),could you not use your plunge saw to take the leading edge of the door,,, on the hinges ,we where always taught to put an H(for hinge),on the side of the door, to identify the hinges side,,on the screws ,we always had a wax candle, and rubbed it on the screw (especially if the screws are brass),makes a bit easierto screw,,hope some of these tops are useful to your viewers,,🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

I am in the process of restotring a 150 year old property and none of the door linings are straight or square, I have some reclaimed doors that all need adjusting, and looking for the best place to start!

Hi Matthew🖐Hanging reclaimed doors in wonkey old linings is a job that takes patience and commitment😳 You can only, really take one door at a time, and don't be afraid to adjust the frames if you have to. You can help yourself enormously with a little wedge behind the frame here or there, or even planing a bowed frame leg straight👍It's probably unlikely that I will do a video on this for 2 reasons. One, people don't like you filming inside thier houses, and that leads onto the second reason, and that's that I don't do domestic work😬Good luck with them and thanks for your great comment😎Cheers Del

Cracking video del really enjoyed it mate 🙌🏻🙌🏻 can I ask mate it might be really obvious to yourself, but I’ve fit a door myself FD30 big heavy bugger 🤣 got the fire casing to match etc but when it came to the lock (as it’s an integral garage personnel door) I wanted to fit 5 lever mortice sash lock, but unfortunately as I was using existing door knobs to match rest of house doors I realised that the backseat of lock when door knob was on, was actually very tight to the fire door casing stop bead, as the stop bead is already on fairy chunky all the way around they are (so baisically when the door was shut the door knob was literally 10mm from the fire lining chunky door stop, if you had sauasage fingers it would be a bugger to turn the knob to open the door if you know what I mean 😂 so in the end I fitted a tubular latch with 62mm backseat so the door knob was further back from casing stop and then just fitted a normal mortice dead lock it all works fine but the door knob doesn’t line up with the mortice lock keyhole 😂 kills my ocd 🤣 have you ever had this problem before del? Hi KotT🖐I know what you mean about knobs on locks/latches with a 45mm backset, and it's pretty tight on you knuckles even with non fire door stops, which is why I always use latches/locks with a 57mm backset👍I haven't fitted, or seen a 57mm backset latch on the same door as a 45mm deadlock, but I can see how it would mess with mine, or anyone's, OCD😲Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

As a handyman I get a lot of calls to hang doors. My heart sinks a bit when I get these calls. I do tell clients that I am really not 100% sure of what I am doing, explaining the skill it takes but sometimes they tell me to crack on and can even help. I'm thinking (each time) how hard it is to hang a door, can't be that hard? Before I start the job I bury myself (yet again) in KZbin vids trying to work out the finer points (the crucial ones) to do a good job. I have yet to hang a door without making a hash of it! They are not easy!! Thank you so much for your video, the best so far. It helped so much. The gig defiantly looks like a good buy, I think buying a router is a good choice. Lots of great tips, thank you so much. I do have one question: the top of the door as you said should be a 2p (coin) gap, the bottom 22mm for the carpet. I get that (thumbs up) The side to side measurements always throws me. Lets say for ease of maths the gap for the door (left to right) is 1 meter and the door itself is ever so slightly less than 1 meter. So basically the door will just about squeeze in if hammered home. So.....if the hinge is flush (as in your vid) and flush with the door frame also in your vid then do you you look at the hinge before you fit it and look at the gap between the hinge leafs when parallel to themselves and measure that gap which might be say 2mm (I have found that each hinge I buy is different) Then take off that 2 pence piece gap for the door handle side which means you cut the door down by 4mm? Is that about right? Apologies for the long message, I should be down the pub as its Friday but I find myself asking about hanging doors. Thanks for reading Andrew. Thank you for your videos

Hi Gords🖐Usually, the door opening is 1/8" wider than the the door, so, taking into account the gap created by the hinge, you should only need to take a 'door gaps' width of the width of the door👍 If I'm shooting in a door to a tighter frame, I just reduce the width enough so I have '2 gaps worth' of gap down one side, (obviously with no gap on one side), then this gap gets split in 2 when the hinges are fitted👊Hope that helps🤞Cheers Del

Great video Del. I find oak doors to heavy for me to lug around as I'm ageing. To make it pay you have to fit a lot in a day for some builders. I love to see a door hung right. Firstly the head has to be even gap. We used to put leading edge on both hinge side and hang side with a planer like you. Now I just do the hinge side like you in the video. Also a centring bit is a must I think there brilliant. Also making the frames your self at the correct measurements and fitted properly is more than half the battle. Tidy job mate, fellow chippy hear. As you mentioned yes the centre drill bits are ace would recommend. Couple wind bags for me for doors are very handy as well. A tip I was taunt years ago for ss screws in hardwood was to dip them in vaseline helps them with snapping. All the best.

I now live in the states and they use prehung split jambs. Basically the jamb is in 2 half’s, you simply sandwich the two side together arcs and all. I hung 11 doors complete with handles in 90 mins. I then showed an American chippy how to do it the manual way, he was blown away. I still use a marking gauge and a chisel for my hinges on manual doors, it’s not faster than a jig and router but I like cutting hinges. Tip for the budding chippies when putting your screws in the hinges, don’t try and drill a hole center of the hinge hole, instead off set the screw to the inside of the door and the bevel on the screw head will pull the hinge edge tight to the cut.

Another good tip if chopping out hinges the old fashioned way is to take your stanley knife and cut the cross grain on the toe and heel of the hinge. No break out when pairing down with the chisel. @@thetallcarpenter haha that’s too funny. Our only difference in method is I use the gauge for long grain on both door and lining. Never used it for the depth. I’m sure your skill is developed enough to know how hard the bash the chisel depending on the thickness of the hinge. All feel that comes with time and practice, but using the gauge for an apprentice is a great idea.

Another neat job mate, I use the same hinge jig but I've had mine altered at the top so I can do 7" from the head aswell as 6" depending on what the architect specifies and your right the screws which come with the hinges are terrible, now I just buy a few boxes of hinge tite screws which are a lot stronger.

I hang my doors pretty much exactly the same way. What I’ve been finding recently is that the quality of the door linings is truly awful at the moment. It doesn’t seem to make any difference who’s supplying them. Twisted legs, different thickness between head and legs etc. It really slows down the whole process when you have to start adjusting and tweaking to get a decent door fit that’s for certain. Sadly I need a hop up to check my door head gap is spot on, it’s harder to see when you’re only 5’7” 😅 Another great upload Del 👍🏻

Great content and well explained. When putting a leading edge on a door and then cutting in a lock or latch, does this mean the lock faceplate will be at a slight angle too if you rebate for it? Tks

Hi Lee🖐The short answer is yes and no🤔 On tubular latches, the faceplate will flex slightly to sit in a parallel recess at the leading edge angle, but on some bigger sashlocks like 5 lever ones, the faceplate is very rigid and will stay square to the lock body meaning the faceplate may sit slightly further in the housing on the front leading edge👍It's pretty minimal and not particularly noticable🤩Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

just catching up with your channel del. graft and knackering my old macbook didnt help. i use a one of the hinge jigs robin clevett sells. seems to work well and i made a jig for door linings with an off cut of shower board. seems to do canny well. maybe one day ill invest in a propper jig like yours. totally need to build myself some timber saw horses again. havent had any of those for a long old time

Hi Del, something I thought of when a couple of people mentioned hinge screws being very flimsy, why not replace them with hardened steel wood screws? The size seems to be 4x25, just what you can get from Screwfix in the ''Turbo silver'' variety (or plain thread if you prefer). Which is fortunate because that's a size I already use for mounting electrical fittings onto timber/ply and needed another pack, so this time I bought the turbo silver instead of turbo gold so it goes with silver hinges should I ever decide to use something other than the stock hinge screws. I'm sure you've already thought of this a million years ago so nothing new!

Hi AA🖐On the odd occasion where I'm solely responsible for the supply of EVERYTHING needed to do a big door hanging job, I do exactly as you say, and use the 'silver screws' from Screwfix👍Like you say, they are a good quality screw, in the right size, right colour and fairly cheap👌Unfortunately, the builders I work with supply me with the cheapest hinge sets available😬 (I should just carry a couple of boxes on the van really👊) Another great comment and thanks for watching🤩Cheers Del

Hi Andy🖐I have very carefully considered getting a clip on radio mic, but I really am only quickly grabbing the camera as I'm working and having to make sure a mic is also charged and syncd up just adds time I don't really have. Also, neither of my cameras have ext mic inputs, which would mean buying a much more expensive camera that would also be much more bulky and I'd be less likely to want to get it covered in dust or he out on a scaffold either falling off or getting rained on😬 I know the audio could be better, and what doesn't help with this particular job is the constant humm of the dehumidifiers😩Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del

One observation, you checked the door for any defects/ marks. Any door with faults would then go into obscure bedrooms. You then proceeded to put a good door into the most obscure bedroom first. What if the other doors on the floor did have marks / damage…….. Logically one would check all doors for defects before fitting the first one in that case…. Just an observation 👍

Good observation, and both doors were on bedrooms so I could have 'hidden' any defects if either door had any. On a contractor job like this you can only spend so long going through, unwrapping and inspecting each door, and sometimes you have to get on and take each door as it comes👍You do make a good point though, and ultimately, if you got to the last door and it had some damage on it that you couldn't 'hide' then you would just get it replaced👊Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del

I was wondering how you managed to keep the doors on their side while you installed the hinges and then I noticed that your saw horses had these handy cut-outs that actually hold the door in place. Hi AA🖐and thanks for your comment🤩The one piece jig has 4 apertures and they have quite a range of adjustment as each opening has a top and bottom block that slides up and down and can be locked into postion👍I just knock up a little, single hinge jig out of mdf if I'm doing re-hangs as the hinges are usually all over the place from door to door😵‍💫Cheers Del

I'm fitting new doors and new 76mm hinges to our existing linings (with old hinge cuts in them, 10 doors total). The old hinge screw holes don't line up and interfere in such a way that middle hole lines up but other 2 are halfway, plus the cuts are a bit rough, and also a little different positions from lining to lining. So I've decided to slide each hinge position a little up on the top one and a little down on the bottom one so the new holes end up on a fresh piece of the lining, with old holes in between the new ones, and use these same measurements on all the doors. I will have to fill in the extra bit left over from the old hinge cuts, but thought it would make the cutting between doors and linings easier, as I can pick 1 set of positions and replicate over and over. Does this sound reasonable? I can make a plywood hinge jig for the Makita 1/4" router (on order, as I didn't have one). I really appreciate the time you take to reply to comments, It's a life saver for someone like me.

Hi Del, amazing job as usual. I have been using the trend skeleton jig for a few years now mate and it seems the one you are using is a little more fiddly with the the wedge etc. have you tried the skeleton one to compare? Also, on the subject of doors, can I get your views/ opinions on how you tackle hanging nee doors in an old frame when the hinge side of the frame has a belly in the middle. I had one recently. Dry fit of the door looked terrible, so I planed the door to contour the frame for even gaps, but this came with its own problems that the centre hinge wouldn’t now reach the frame as tightly as the top and bottom. It seemed like a lose, lose situation. I managed to get it pulled in, but I wasn’t happy with the tension it would probably be putting on that hinge. I would appreciate your thoughts mate?

You can open a door outwards Ak, but it needs to be well coated and more importantly, it will need some sort of check strap or back stop fitted so it doesn't get ripped off the hinges if it gets caught by the wind😬Cheers Del

Do you guys ever used pre hung doors? Most of what I do are installing pre hung doors( both flat jamb and split jamb) while occasionally installing a new slab in an existing jamb/opening, hanging a new or reclaimed slab in an a jamb I made or building a door from scratch. I find it interesting that you hang the door slabs once the jamb has been installed. I always found it much easier to hang a slab in a jamb on the bench and then install the whole thing in the opening after, unless I am swapping a new slab in to an old opening. I had an intersting project last winter involving 15 antique door slabs that where reclaimed from and old building that had to be squared up, re beveled, new hinges cut in and have new jambs made to fit wall of all different sizes because I had a bunch of shimming and furring out of the walls to make them level and such. I went got all my measurements and headed back to the bench to knock it out.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help please. After watching your vids on the makita cordless track saw I finally bought one. Arrived today. Very excited to use it. I live in a very small flat and decided to hook it up to my Henry Hoover to keep the dust down when doing my first cuts on 18mm Ply. I got an electric shock! I unplugged the hoover, no shock....hooked up the hoover again...another shock. I've googled the possible problems and the shock could be just static build up from the saw dust in the Henry pipe, still it's not pleasant and not ideal getting zapped each time I do a cut. This is a bit of a problem. It's not the cordless unit that is at fault but my hoover. Do you have any suggestions. Cracking work I've always found with all ball bearing hinges I always have to have them slightly protruding by a half mil as if they are routered flush the hinge side gap is always 2 mil .Silly really you think the hinge manufacturers would change this obviously never measured the gap between the leaves when door closed

Felt for you when you were lifting them doors, I must have hung at least 20 in a house once, only they were mainly 45mm thick. Never used the Trend jig but could you use it on rebated frames ? Hi Kevin🖐Yes, some of these doors can be quite heavy, and you know it if you've been lugging them about all day😩 With regard to the jig on rebated frames, I'm not sure how good it would be, as the architrave set back needs to be enough to accommodate the jigs depth stops for starters, plus the jig is dead straight, so no good on a bowed frame😬Thanks for your comment as always bud🤩Cheers

Its not nice feeling like your messing someone around Darren, I know, but you have been let down by the guy who said he'd have your outgoing Makita set up which has now put you in an undesirable situation with your tool supplier. Personally, I would explain to your supplier that you've been let down and you really don't want 2 track saws at the moment. If he supplies you regularly with kit, I'm sure he will value your custom and understand your position. As long as he gets the Milwaukee back in as new condition, he will easily be able to sell it to someone else👍

Why is your middle hinge in the centre and not further up? I was always told that most of the weight of the door is at the top third of the door. Also 4 inch hinges are OTT for 35mm doors, should have advised the client to go for 3 inch hinges, looks so much better. Love your content though pal ❤️🔥

Hi del another great video bud, I'm curious... Are you self employed and do work for the house builders aswell as your own work? I was self employed for years but just recently went back working for a company, long story but less hassle!! Just curious bud, cheers mate

Hi JWB🖐 I've been self employed for 32 years and now only have about 4 main customers. 2 are builders the other are farmers👍 I've nearly always worked on an hourly rate, which I know is low compared to what others charge, but my customers are always happy with my work and the volume I can produce each day, plus I don't feel under pressure to rush about which means I can still really enjoy working👊Cheers Del

@@thetallcarpenter thanks very much for the reply del, I like that way of working, 4 main clients means you know where you stand, I was was doing work for everyone and anyone, felt like I was always running here there and everywhere, life was getting consumed by work and in the evenings paperwork, got to much in the end so I threw in the towel and went with a company, company van and fuel card, reasonable pay, holiday pay etc... There are perks to both sides but much less hassle for me now and can enjoy my time away from work!! Take care mate 🤝

Have you seen the FC jig? Frank's built one thats much better and no need to drill holes etc. Just set, clamp and go. I also agree you need a centering bit. Plus why don't you use an airbag?

I haven't seen that jig Garry🤔 I occasionally use an airbag to help locate the door, but it's a long way down there for me to start pumping it up😲Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

In America a standard interior door hinge is 3 1/2 inches, which I think is better, a 3 inch hinge is to small and a 4 inch is to big, plus they have pre hung doors, the English are a bit old fashioned.
