Hi there, carpenter here for all the folks asking about load on ceiling joists. Ceiling joists are meant to distriubute load evenly between all ceiling joists and not all ceiling joists are the same especially in older homes. I would also make a suggestion to distribute the load across multiple joists vs loading one joist alone. Loading one joist will cause deflection and bowing over time especially dependent on the span of the ceiling. If a ceiling joist is also a floor joist (2nd level) most likely they will be 2x6 or larger. If they only support a roof those ceiling joists may only be designed to carry roof load and drywall load. In older homes I have seen 2x4s across spans for bungalow roofs and I have had to repair ceiling sagging on homes. If you have access to your building plans or can visually inspect your ceiling joists that would be the safest bet. I would never hang anything off of joists smaller than 2 x 6 s (actual size 1.5” x 5.5”)

Great video. Thank you for including the link to the mount. How the ring mount holding up? Just have one question. Would it be more secure if it was mounted on two different joists rather than only using one?
@ShreddedDad
@ShreddedDad 5 жыл бұрын
Rings are holding up fine. I use them for a lot of exercises and they are anchored down really well. I don't think it matters whether it's on one joist or two. As long as they are on the joist you should be fine.
@welldoitlive675
@welldoitlive675 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it absolutely would be safer to use two different joists, even better if you can span 3 joists - this is always recommended for ceiling storage racks, for example. This spreads the load between the wood beams. Installing on the same joist is effectively using a single mounting point, as far as your ceiling is concerned. Installing into the drywall is not a viable solution. No drywall anchors are rated for a grown man in motion.

Absolutely connect it to TWO joists....that's the entire point.....one end to one joist and the other end to the other joist....attaching to a single joist would be a HORRIBLE idea....with all due respect. : )

These are awesome, all other hangers you can't adjust the distance of the rings- Be nice if the belt loops slid back and forth to adjust Can you hang a punching bag on this too?
@ShreddedDad
@ShreddedDad 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Depends on what kind of anchor is used for the bag. The rungs on the ceiling hanger have enough space for a strap to go through but something like a carabiner might be too big

Looking to do this but I’m curious if you’ve done or have access to load calculations for putting load on the bottom flange. My understanding is open web joists are only designed for compressive forces (holding the floor above) and not tensile forces. Worried about the possibility of separating the web from both ends.

Ok so I wanna hung up 2 punching bags in one location on garage and on other side of garage rings and climbing rope, my ceilings only 8ft high so climbing rope will be use for other exercises. I will be using a 2x4 or maybe 2x6 board across maybe 3 joist for punching bags. I have a strut channel which will be attach to boards 2x4 or 2x6 board. For the rings and rope they will be mounted on a rogue ring hunger which I will attach to a board too. I been using lag bolts to hung up stuff from ceiling, however people have been saying to use GRK RSS14312HP RSS HandyPak 1/4 by 3-1/2-Inch Structural Screws which are easier and stronger than the lag bolts and don't have to predrill?? Will these grk be good to mout weight pegs on wall or lag bolts will be better for this?

I haven’t used GRK so I don’t know but I used lag bolts for my wall weight pegs and they’ve held up

I bought this hanger and even though hole spacing is approximtely every two inches, the critical outer most holes are less than 32 inches O.C. which would be required to mount on multiple 2x joists in typical wood construction framing (or 19.2" O.C. for engineered joists). This is why its impossible to use on two joists. To be safe I may drill into a basement steel beam which will place it lower than desirable. This would be a simple fix for Titan to correct.
@ShreddedDad
@ShreddedDad 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah should be a simple fix. I didn’t even think about using 2 joists when I installed mine because of the way I wanted the rings to face. I just installed them on one joist.

@@ShreddedDad If I could use a deep floor joist I would do that also but were I want to hang them is a only a 2x4 bottom chord of roof truss.

I understand the caution. I wish that I could share a picture, because the ceiling is made of what looks like 2 x 4s. It's an older house that was built to last, so the wooden ceiling is "heavy duty." That's why I thought it could work.
