I've always been curious on making helmets and I've really wanted to make one, wondering if wood should be used. After trying to figure out how, I came across pepakura... And all I can say is THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Your introduction to pepakura was extremely informative, setting down all the basics for the guy who just discovered what pepakura is barely 10 minutes ago! Once again, Thank you so much, as I will soon try out this hobby, cause it's something I would LOVE to do!

THANK YOUUUU so much, you've been a huge help thus far! So far its been a pain to find epoxy resin, but I can't wait to try this out once I locate some! I'm thrilled that you're putting all this time and effort into teaching us n00bs how this is done, and I assure you I intend on putting this advice to good use (once midterms are over... and once i find epoxy, heh.).

Love the video man. One thing you didn't mention in this video about the supplies u need is a respirator. Now if I'm not mistaken you don't need one for the epoxy resin, but for the other type you do. Just figured I'd throw that out there. If you did mention it and I just missed it then ignore me lol

Yeah, I agree it's important to keep some supports even during the fiberglass step. I removed all my supports after the resin step and even if my pièces were great, they pretty much all warped a little bit after fiberglassing. I don't think they are all necessary, it's possible to remove some so it's easier to apply the fiberglass, but where you know a piece could easily bend if more weight is added, keep the support. Or at least whatI did once, I removed it, did my thing and put it back.

To add to the support part. pepakura will tell you the distance between two points. you can use it to measure out your supports precisely if your piece is not holding its own weight. That really helped me with a couple pieces.

Hello again, :D I was at my local car shop and I found an epoxy putty sort of like play-doh. says it hardens to steel within 20 minutes. Would you say that'd be a good call? After I put the Resin coating on of course.
@axelalonso24078 жыл бұрын
Also, to extend the life of your brush (unless, for some reason, you buy foam brushes, in which case, don't buy those for resin) rinse the brush in acetone once the coat is complete. Used the same brush on two separate days for my inside and outside coat with no problems. Saw this tip in another video somewhere, forget who made it, but very useful tip.

Hey Dave, I was wondering if it is possible or even advisable to use epoxy resin instead of polyester resin when rondo-ing? I figure that you will probably cover my question in your next video, but as you have yet to post part 3, I was hoping for some of your wisdom.
@dghezzo11 жыл бұрын
NO!!!!! Polyester & Epoxy resins cannot be used interchangeably. They are chemically different animals. Mixing epoxy resin with bondo would..... uh.... well.. I have no idea what exactly it would do, but it would not be good, nor what you'd be looking to achieve. At their core, the only real difference between bondo and poly-resin is their thickness. They are essentially made up of the same chemicals.

Yes, true. You "can" clean the brushes with Acetone/Thinner after using them. However more often than not you don't end up getting all of the cleaner out of the bristles and end up contaminating the next batch of resin that you mix up, especially with epoxy. For me personally I just throw away the $0.40 brush and grab a new one.

What type of paper do you use?
@dghezzo11 жыл бұрын
If it's what I'm thinking of it either comes in a plastic cylinder or in two separate containers of part a and b. The closest comparable thing I can think of would be Apoxi-Sculpt which is a fantastic product, but not for the application at hand. This would not provide a very good bond as epoxy putty should be applied to a coarse (sanded) rigid surface which a resin coated piece is not. The putty would separate from the piece in many areas and would not give any real strength.

Hello Sir, thank you very much for this informative video. I do have a question for you, however. If I have a piece that is going to be completely closed off, like a weapon, what should I do about coating the inside? Should I cut the weapon into pieces and still coat the inside? If I were to do that how should I reconnect the pieces? Any information would help greatly. Thanks!
