In this video I will share my tips on how to harvest ripe watermelons. Knowing when to harvest a watermelon can be a little tricky but once you get the hang of it, it's not hard to do. Results are in the video. The four varieties in this video are Charleston Gray, Yellow Moon And Stars, Congo, and Orange Tendersweet. Thanks for watching! Subscribe for more gardening videos.

All your tips are good. You inadvertently hit upon the only sure fire way to know if a watermelon is done. I didnt say was ripe but done ripening. You reached up and snapped off the vine. You should always be able to do this with a fully ripe watermelon. If its still clinging it still ripening.

Lovely watermelons and great tips Christa!!! This year has been the best for watermelons 🍉 and you are exactly right about leaving them on the vine for a week or two after the tendrils have dried ~ so much sweeter at least for us this year... 😊👩🏽‍🌾🍉

I harvested 2 of mine right when the tendril was dry complete and it was not ready. You are right to wait 4 to 7 days longer. From now on, I am going to post a note to mine :) and start counting. The yellow bottom when yellow if you turn it over it will green back up. It is because it is not getting it green on, from the light.

In my observation to choose ripped Water melon is that, I relied on dry tendrils Plus the Leaf near the tendril is 50 to 70 percent getting brown color.

Thank you so much for this nice videos, I've send to few videos programs and I don't get a reply. Well I have never been lucky in growing this watermelon fruit, what do u do to grow a beautiful watermelon like your, let explain what I have done , I have two garden pots and two plants, size of pot it's about 12 gallon near enough, with cow manure, that one plant made a fruit that grew fast to where its at, it's still young plant, that one got the the size of a foot long and inch long, for a watermelon it's small, it seems it stop growing, and I cut off all the ends of every vine. The other plant I left it alone it's got all its vines, that plant starting to get its first fruit. And that one i got it with cow manure and mushrooms compost, I will see if this one will make any difference vs the other plant. Do you recommend to cut off all the vines off the watermelon or not, I'm not sure if you can do that or not, or if I over done it, please tell me what I'm doing wrong, cause my fruits don't seems to grow.

I don't really know, it depends on how warm it is later in the year. My first frost usually happens in mid to late October and it really starts cooling down towards the end of September so there is no way that I could start growing watermelons now. I am in Ohio. You would have better luck than I would for sure.

Nice series .... I grew watermelons for the first time last season. I grew three varieties - Kajari melons, Sugar baby bush, and Orangeglo. My Orangeglo vines (4 plants) jumped out of my 4x8 raised bed (imagine that) and headed for the fence. Ever try to grow Orangeglo's vertically? I had about 8 melons growing on the fence. Tried supporting them with mesh bags ... long story short ... the biggest one broke through and hit the ground. Did you know that watermelons do not bounce? I was able to save about 2/3 of it - whew! The others were much smaller when I had to snip them off ... most were actually ripe enough to eat. Half of my Kajari and Sugar baby plants were killed by critters (feral cats) digging or stepping on them and breaking them off at the base. I ended up with a couple melons from each variety out of 17 plants. Not a banner year ... but I'm getting ready to start my seeds with 5 varieties this year. Hey, it couldn't get any worse than last year, so I'm a glutton for punishment. This will be the moment of truth as to if I will continue growing melons at all. Best of luck to all in 2020 ... take care & stay safe.

How early do you start growing these? I have around 8 plants growing now and I'll probably have to finish them indoors before they're ready to pick
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 жыл бұрын
I start them indoors 3 to 4 weeks before my average last frost date, then plant them outside after my last frost date. I have also direct sown them and had good luck. Once I plant them in the ground, they are usually ready to harvest in 80-100 days depending on the average days to maturity of the variety. Where do you live? Do you have cool summers? That could definitely slow them down.

Hi I have a question about watermelons basically I started to grow my first batch around May and June and I didnt have trouble growing them and they just started to have small flowers but as soon as the flowers opened up they would close back and they would shrivel up and die and mostly idk if its because of the sun or I'm watering them too much or if it has to do with anything else they are in the sun but they are under some tall trees so they do get some shade when the sun is at a certain spot. The vines are growing and are not stopping but they dont have flowers in none of them the leaves do look healthy as well. Also I have it in a box and I'm worried that they'll die when it starts to get cold.
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 4 жыл бұрын
Were you fertilizing them at all? Phosphorus encourages blooming and fruiting. If you had flowers at one time and they never produced fruit, then you might be lacking pollinating insects.

I know you always grow heirloom varieties, but I wanted to try a hybrid this year called Gold In Gold. If I grow it, and hand pollinate it with the same Gold In Gold pollen, will the seeds be true? Can I save those seeds and grow the same watermelon next year?
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 4 жыл бұрын
It would not grow true to seed even if you used pollen from the same variety. Stabilizing a vegetable variety can take several generations. It might be fun to see what happens though if you have the extra space, the next generation may or may have traits that you like.

@ChristasGarden 4 жыл бұрын
I tried to grow that variety twice but it didn't work out either time! It has been a couple of years so I can't remember exactly what happened to the plants but I think the problems were herbicide drift and an animal dug it up the second time. I have people ask me about them every once in a while, maybe I should get more seeds and try again.
