My celosia plants were doing awesome. I went away for a weekend and forgot to ask the neighbors to water for me. It's been a hot summer. When I came home they looked dead. I harvested the plants. They are drying now. Will I get any viable seeds?

It depends on when you planted them. If they are full grown plants, you could probably get some seeds. I can't say for sure though. It's worth trying though.

How do you store in the plastic bags to keep dry
@MidwestGardener Жыл бұрын
If the seeds are thoroughly dry before you put them in bags, they should stay dry. If you are worried about it, store in paper envelopes.

Just saved me some this fall from a friends garden, never thought to use a strainer but very good idea for next time. Do the seeds produce the same color flower they were saved from? I saved from 3 different colors and labeled as such assuming this would be the case. Thanks for the vid.
@MidwestGardener6 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got some free seeds. It's hard to beat that. As far as color, like most flowers, there is probably an order of dominance, so it all depends on which color is dominant and where the pollen came from that pollinated the flowers. By labeling them, you have a very nice little experiment in the works. That will be interesting to see if one color or another dominates, or if they all will breed true to color. My guess is that one or more of the colors will end up producing more than one color of flower.

How old are the plants from which seeds are extracted?
@MidwestGardener2 жыл бұрын
I planted the seeds in the spring, and harvested from the plants in the fall. I don't know what you mean by which seeds are extracted.
@MakeYouSmile039 ай бұрын
Hi, will it spread on its own because the seeds will fall to the ground and a new celosia plant will emerge before it dies?
@MidwestGardener9 ай бұрын
Yes, sometimes some of the seeds will sprout after they fall to the ground. Usually it is the next spring.

hi this is very nice video, i got small celosia flower but i wonder how do i know is the seeds is ready to be harvest? do i need to wait for the flower to dry at the point it turn dry/brown? is it okay if i pluck the seeds/not whole flower if i see the seeds already?
@MidwestGardener4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sure, you can remove any seeds that you can see. The drier the flower is, the easier the seeds are to remove. But if you wait too long, some of them will fall out on the ground. I usually wait until the flowers are faded looking and starting to dry a little bit.

This seems like a lot of work to get rid of the little bitty bits of chaff. I have stored various seeds for several years at a time leaving some of the chaff in the bags. Does the chaff interfere with germination rates? Because if it doesn't, I am not inclined to be so fussy about getting out all of the chaff. (I am not selling the seed, so I don't have to worry about cheating anyone by weight or volume). Your thoughts?
@MidwestGardener2 жыл бұрын
I have never tested it, but I doubt if the chaff hurts germination much, if at all. As long as you don't mind it, I wouldn't bother.
@ZokomoTV5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video! I will be doing this soon. Do the seeds need to be chilled at all?
@MidwestGardener5 жыл бұрын
Seems like I read somewhere that there was one variety of them that germinates better if chilled for 4 or 5 days, but for the most part, they don't require it.

Midwest Gardener I bought some more plants this year so I will keep an eye on them this time. I’d like to get some seeds from a couple flowering varieties but the fern type is the only one available here in BC that I have seen at the garden stores. We should start up a seed sharing platform.
@MidwestGardener4 жыл бұрын
Yes, some areas can have limited availability for some plants. I think there are probably already some seed sharing sites out there. I don't exchange seeds very often.
@SimPilot-dl8zy4 жыл бұрын
Midwest Gardener well couldn’t hurt to start. I know I couldn’t possibly use a 1000 seeds so why not give to those that don’t have? I would only ask that the folks pay the postage. I’m all about helping people but that’s just me.
@MidwestGardener4 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's a great attitude. I get so many requests though, that I couldn't keep up if I sent out seeds every time people asked. We share a lot of produce most year with the local food bank, but this year will be a little different.
