How to Harvest Joe Pye Weed with Michael Pilarski "Skeeter"

In the old moon-shining days the bootleggers would bury barrels of their mash to hide it from the revenuers. The bootleggers would check how the mash was doing by taking a long stalk of Joe Pye Weed and lowering it down into the barrel and take a sip to see how along it was. I'm from South Carolina and they also call it "Purple Plume". The stalks are hollow all the way, just like straws.

The correction needs to be corrected. Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium --> Eutrochium purpureum) has also been called "Queen of the Meadow" by Appalachian herbalist Tommie Bass (see Crellin and Philpott text). The PictureThis app also recognizes E purpureum as Queen of the Meadow. This name is not unique, unfortunately, to only Filipendula u.

I have it in my yard and have never had an issue with Gopher's.

@@markvitale1 One of my acres was lent to a grass grower by the previous owner to grow annual rye grass. I had to let the grass self-seed to avoid it becoming a desert. A couple of gophers come every year to turn the one acre into a desert. They dig up dirt to kill all the grass seedlings and "to grow" their favorite dandelions. So, it becomes a vicious cycle. Some gophers will move over to my other acre and kill some grass everywhere. The property was planted with low growing stupid lawn grass. The gophers kill a lot of it by digging up dirt to cover it every single year. Unfortunately, I can't grow trees in like 1/4 acre cause of the septic system. So, that area is destroyed year after year. Gophers, voles and moles will come occasionally to destroy some of my young trees and vegetables in my other areas. You are lucky cause you had a good ecosystem to begin with.
