So helpful! Thank you 🙏🏽 I planted a whole bunch of organic lettuces (as small plants)...all of them sprouted stalks with flowers and tastes horrible. I didn’t know what the issue was. So glad I learned this. Newbie gardener so I’m eager to learn!

A tip for for future plantings: always trim the flower stalks as soon as they pop up. Also, if you’re plants are bolting or sending up flowers, that is a sign they need a little bit of pruning &/or TLC.

I am very impressed with the amount of food you are producing in that small space. I am also impressed with the results you are getting with the Good Dirt you used to fill your containers. I’m definitely going to order some. I am already using the Vermisterra products. They do a great job. Throw in your talent and you have a winning combination. Thank you for this series and happy gardening.

Hey there, Joe - thank you for your kind words! it IS amazing how much food can be grown in a little space with a little planning, - utilizing vertical space is key. AND you can't go wrong with the combination of Smart Pots, Good Dirt, Vermisterra worm castings and tea - veggies just explode with growth! Glad you are ordering Good Dirt - you will love it! I just replanted some of my other Smart Pots that have had Good Dirt in them for nearly a year - the soil was still loose and fluffy and looked as amazing as the day I planted it. I just added a handful or two of new Good Dirt, worm castings, watered with worm tea and they were good to go - you will love it! How are those seeds you won growing?

Hi Kim. I forgot to mention the Smart Pots. I cannot wait to try them. The one the I won in your giveaway I am keeping in my grow room. So far, I have planted the Tiny Tim tomato, Genovese basil, and Grand Rapids lettuce in my grow room. I am waiting until fall to plant the peas, chard, and kale. I will have to wait until next season to plant the rest. I am extremely pleased with the choice of seeds in your Small Space Kitchen Garden Collection. I intend to purchase more of your seed collections for spring. Again, great content on your channel, great instruction, and your enthusiasm for gardening is inspiring. Thank you and take care.

My method is a bit different, I put the harvested lettuce leaves in an ice water bath will about 3 tbs of salt. I let it rest until all the ice is melted. The salt kill the bug and critters. Then I spin it dry, but I have found using a rung out wet paper towel in a zip lock plastic bag allows the lettuce to remain crisp and tasty for about 2 wks.

Thanks for the tips! I clean & store my lettuce much the same as you. I soak mine in cold water with a large amount of table salt. I find the salt helps crisp up the leaves. After about 10 minutes or when I remember I rinse each leaf off quickly and put them into a salad spinner. I then use either the veggie zip lock bags with paper towel in it or place it in a large Tupperware container and store in the fridge. My lettuce will last for weeks like this.

The tomatoes I have are a patio variety that I bought. I didn’t discover your KZbin channel until after all my starts failed. ☹️. I think it is to late to start any of them now, but I might try the Arkansas traveler. I am going to order your lettuce collection. I have my shade cloth ready. We are heading into triple digits soon so it may be in vain. But I think gardening is trial and error and learning from those errors. Have a wonderful weekend and keep those videos coming. Hi great video on lettuce. I have several varieties that are just about finished i believe. I just received my seed order from you and look forward to see the new varieties of lettuce. How long should i harvest? I have several that the main stem is now about 14 inches tall with a few leaves of lettuce growing only on the very top. The full length of the stems are bare? Is it time to pull these and plant new? I am using a raised garden bed and was wondering since it has been about 47 degrees here in Ventura, California at night, can i plant your seeds directly in my garden bed or must i start the seeds indoors? Suggestions? Thanks for the great videos! Me and my Sister recently received our order from you and were pleasantly surprised. You really pay attention to the details! Congrats on the new book! Hope you sell out multiple times! Have a great day!

@Grizelda1227

Yes, that means your plant is “bolting”. It will send out flowers and die after. It is the plant’s last-ditch effort to spread its pollen/seeds before dying. If you keep up with regular pruning and maintenance, it will not bolt. 👍 cut and remove any flower stalks

I appreciate your video but I'm really concerned about how much you're promoting Saran Wrap and paper towels to deal with storage of your garden lettuce. What a waste of plastic and trees. One of the main important aspects of gardening is lowering the footprint of our waste. There's also nothing wrong with eating lettuce that has a bug on it or or any micro amount of dirt from your garden if your gardening organically and not introducing fresh manures that might carry pathogens. Humans used to eat insects quite a bit back in the day and we're just discovering the life extending properties of certain insects. You have so much Consciousness and awareness in your video but seem to be lacking in the categories that I describe above. I encourage people to learn about the hard science when it comes to things like overly clean and antibacterial. Any bits of dirt that are on your lettuce are providing healthy gut microbes to improve your overall digestive system. I just lay my lettuce out on a dry towel and let it sit for a while and then flip it over and lay it on another dry towel. When my lettice is very dry and then stored in a container with an open top, leaving the lettuce fluffy and not packed down, it stores just as well as the method described in this video using paper towels and Saran Wrap. I've tested this both ways in the tiny bit of extra life you get from using all that paper towel and Saran Wrap is not really worth the additional gains considering the waste. Think about how much plastic we're creating when almost every volume of food that we eat comes with an equivalent volume of plastic from the food system? Completely unsustainable and microplastics are now destroying the ocean ecosystem. 2/3 of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean ecosystem. It's time for KZbin influencers to bring in a greater consciousness about how their Channel interweaves with climate change issues

I've been watching your vids and others for close to 7 or 8 years. Since I started thinking about container gardening. So thank you for the info. This one is new to me. And I started growing lettuce the last 2 summers. I tried earlier, but the rabbits kept eating it. So the notion of harvesting it so it keeps grown is very helpful. Since what you describe happened the last 2 years and I had to keep replanting the lettuce. I do have to say. While homegrown lettuce is better. I don't mind eating it out of the store. Or radishes, onions or cucumbers. It's not as good. But tomatoes in the winter suck.

You can also store lettuce heads tightly in aluminum foil. It'll last for months. I use this method. It really works.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 4 ай бұрын
Somethings to think about in using that method. Here are some concerns about using aluminum foil. Please note that if it works for you and you are fine with that, etc. no judgment from me, keep on :) Aluminum foil can create and trap moisture around the lettuce heads, leading to faster spoilage/rot, etc. Lettuce needs airflow to stay fresh. Foil can also trap ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening process and can lead to wilting and decay. Ideally, store lettuce heads in a perforated plastic bag or a breathable produce storage bag. OR, you can wrap lettuce heads loosely in a clean, damp cloth or paper towel and place them in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Best results: the refrigerator's crisper drawer, where the temperature is slightly cooler and humidity levels can be adjusted. Keeping lettuce cool and dry helps to prolong its freshness and crispness. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I hope you have liked the video and subscribed (I can't always tell who has!) Best -- CaliKim

don't put paper towels on your food. those are not free of bacteria, chemicals and dyes... imagine the factory those come from in China. if you need to pat lettuce dry just use your own hand towel that you washed yourself. i realize that is also not free of bacteria but at least you know it's not covered with some nasty germs or chemicals. better yet, just let the lettuce air dry. don't store it too long, just eat it after you harvest it.

Like that dog, and be sure to augment your store bought soil, w/added bat guano, green sand, & ground up egg shells, and rabbit poop, & cow shi - . Wanted, to get your attention, add at least 20% cent Perlite for fast draining, as you don't want to use either Peat Moss or Vermiculite, as BOTH will rot by the 4th. month, also add 10% sand to drain faster, but wash your sand first. Use only top[ soil from some old yard, black dirt, add worm casting soil, and you don't want to use chemicals, as it is in your plant, so stay organic, and water with 1 table spoon of fire wood ashes every 4th. time you water, to raise, keep your P.H. above 6.1 veggies like slightly acidic soil. You can also use small Kiddie wading pools for raising red worms in doors, use a 60 C.F.L. bulb over their bed, so they wont crawl out.

How fun to grow veggies for the first time - glad you are loving it! Make sure your basil is getting regular watering, the soil is not waterlogged, or getting super dry. Here is a video with some watering tips, including how to check for moisture, bit.ly/calikimwateringinsummerheat. It needs at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, and should be pruned regularly to encourage growth, as in this video, bit.ly/calikimbasilendlesssupply. Hope this helps - keep me posted!

The peas I grew ended up being tough and stringy. Do you know why?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly - check the variety, some peas are meant to be a shelled variety, sugar snap peas can be eaten pod and all. You also want to harvest peas at a young stage, if left on the vine too long, they may become stringy. The good thing is, they grow very quickly, so just plant a new batch and hopefully you can get a harvest in before it gets too hot. They like temps under 75 F, so if it's already too hot, plant in the fall as the weather cools down. Good luck!
