Hi dear a quick tip for u and all. U need to allow the plant to die. Like dead plant. After that you no need to add water after soil is dry you can harvest it. Then u can see the skin of the turmeric will be hard and able to store for months. Good day

I've got excess turmeric and have been making a cold infused drink for the past few months. In a large jug, I add grated turmeric, slice and squeeze a couple of lemons & oranges including rind and honey. Fill up with water and refrigerate for at least 8 hours. Helps the immune system and prevents from getting sick as well.

I saw a Chinese lady storing them in sand once they were completely dry. It looked like she knew what she was doing so I thought I'd share that. She had quite alot so it must store for a long period of time that way. She did however harvest it when the leaves had dried up. You forgot to mention the beautiful flowers that this plant puts out and that the turmeric will only be ready to harvest after they appear. You can harvest some at different stages as well and leave the rest in the ground to continue to grow until the leaves die back, unless of course you want to harvest the leaves as well.

I just bought a piece of organic turmeric at Whole Foods to grow. So glad I found your video. You asked us to let you know what we use turmeric for. I make a turmeric tea. I have a tea pot with a basket. I don’t use exact measurements because I don’t think you can mess this tea up. I squirt honey to cover the bottom of my tea pot. Then I squirt in some lemon juice. I use the bottled kind. In the basket I slice up one to two turmeric roots (unpeeled). I slice up a ginger root (unpeeled) and break up a stick of cinnamon. I pour boiling water over basket and let it steep 15-30 minutes. It’s fabulous hot and cold. This is a tea I always have on hand. That’s why I’m so excited to grow our own turmeric!!

I cried a little bit watching you throw them out. ;) Other dishes calling for the leaves include haldi and patholi. I may not be using those terms correctly, but growing these at home will allow me to learn to cook them and provide some fresh, quality turmeric for my health. I just scored some organic roots at the farmer's market today, so I'm eager to get them in the dirt!

Cut these fresh turmeric, ginger, green chillies if you like into small pieces. Add salt, lots of lemon juice. Leave for 10 minutes fresh pickle is ready. You can just snack on them or add to buttermilk and drink and you will love the tiny pieces that you munch on. Very good during hit summer as a drink. Recipe3. Mix coconut, brown sugar, cardomom and keep aside. Make a thick rice paste by adding water. To this add white sauce made with flour( just like the one made for pasta). Mix them to a thick spreading consistency.add very little salt and 1tsp melted butter or coconut oil to the batter. Spread this batter in leaf.add the coconut mixture to one half. Fold and steam for 10 minutes. Your whole home will smell turmeric.

Takes a little bit to get down with all the pulp but it's not a killer when you only have to take two tablespoons every night. I usually have to chase it down with tea.. my husband is very tough and he will just chew garlic ginger and turmeric and lemon peel all together and swallow it with tea 😆

Turmeric should go in every chicken dish . The amount is up to you. It has best flavor cooked well as boiled with whole chicken and your other seasonings, then use your chicken to make dinner and you have a really great broth for soups or gravy Toast it with your sauteed onions to start your meals. Try a small amt. at first if your not sure , but I use it by the tablespoons for my chicken soup and bone broth Try with pork and look to India and other nation who use it most often for other ideas. Turmeric is so very good for you with medicinal properties. Dry it to put in gel capsules. Black pepper helps your body use the turmeric and should be used together. Just make a drink of it. Cooked is best add some milk. Clean the skin with a spoon Greating it with a hand greater or food processor when fresh is easiest to dry and then grind with a spice/coffee grinder Or throw cuts or slices in broth to cook then remove (could leave skin on) Or not harvest at all, just cut as you need it Carla

Greetings, re the parts of Turmeric you refer to (not incorrectly) as tubers. They are in fact Nodulose Roots. Their function is store nutrients/energy during the good times and make it available to the plant in the lean times. The sole function is nutrient/energy storage and they should not contain the correct cells/tissue for growing new plants. If you do experiment with them I would love to see the outcome. REALLY enjoying the way you share your growing experiences - keep it up!

This is a fantastic video. I have successfully been growing ginger for a couple of years now. Last year I tried growing turmeric. While my ginger eventually sprouted indoors, my turmeric did nothing. Eventually, it was time to move everything outside. Initially I tossed the turmeric rhizomes in the trash but then pulled them back out and planted them in a neglected pot outside on my porch where I promptly forgot about them. Two months later, I had turmeric growing. When fall arrived, I hauled the pot indoors. The plants currently look like the plants you just harvested. I am seriously debating just leaving it in the pot and moving it back outside in May. This year I purchased 5 pounds of turmeric and ginger and planted them indoors a month ago. The ginger's nodes are starting to bulge but the turmeric is once again still dormant. House temp is 68-71 degrees. What temperature are you starting your rhizomes at? Should I get heat mats? I live in the mountains of NC. Last frost date April 15.

Hai I do have one tip for using the leaves. In Indonesia and some countries in Asia we use the leaves for a special beefstew called Rendang. In 2011 it was crowned the Best Food in CNN's 50 Best Food. The leaves we use to make the meat tender and add this specific flavour to the dish Im an Indonesian woman born and raised in the Netherlands. Here in the Netherlands it is difficult lets say almost nog available if we want to buy these leaves in a Asian supermarket we call Toko. So yes look for an Indonesian recipe for Rendang and you'll see how they use the leaves. I try so hard to grow turmeric and finally I have one leave coming up this week. Id give it some TLC

My husband and I drink fire cider every night for our health and it has a lot of turmeric in it. It has been hard for me to find and when I do it's like $12 a pound! So I plan on trying to grow it myself next year along with ginger and hopefully some garlic. I don't know much about gardening but I am trying to learn. Of the other channels made a really good suggestion of first drawing the turmeric for several days outside and then storing it in a bucket of sand to preserve it for a long time. And then just get what you need out of the bucket of sand. It makes sense to me because then moisture wouldn't be able to get to it and rot it so quickly as opposed to storing it in the refrigerator. Anyway, I thought that was a neat suggestion.

@@anneg8319 well I just use the info that I found on the internet. I mix it up too depending on what I have access to. Sometimes it's hard to find fresh turmeric, so we substitute the powdered kind. But basically I use garlic, jalapenos, lemons and sometimes other citrus fruits like limes, oranges and grapefruit, fresh turmeric, fresh ginger, fresh or non creamy horseradish, onions, honey and apple cider vinegar with the mother. I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of cranberries lately too so I will probably put that in my next batch.

The "tuber-like structures" are call corms. From my understanding you can use them to propagate. Pretty sure onions and garlic produce corms too.

Hello Great video👍🏻☺️ as always I wanted to ask about something out of this videos topic. What do u think about using cyanobacteria as fertilizer ? Will it effect veggies and fruits ? Is it a good idea or bad i never tried it..
@TheMoreYouGrow
@TheMoreYouGrow 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried it myself. I had professors talk about it when I was in college but from what I remember it was more of a “it could be a source of bio fertilizer 🤷🏼‍♂️” think will just take more studies to see how viable it is and if it has any negative effects

The leaves can be rolled and tied up and added to Asian curries, stews and stir fries for flavour only, not to be eaten as they are fibrous. Fresh turmeric and ginger can be added to juice and smoothies.

A little grated turmeric in omelettes and scrambled egg is great. So, fry a small chopped onion in olive oil for a few minutes (you can add a small chopped seedless hot or mild pepper as well), add salt, black pepper, a small chopped tomato and grated turmeric. Cook for a minute, then add the beaten eggs to either scramble or as an omelette. Delicious!

Thank you for the video. May I ask, how long were they in that pot? Is that growth from just a year, or is that over the span of several years? I'm trying to get a better clue as to how long they need to stay in pot before yielding a bountiful harvest. Thank you.

I got my turmeric at a small Indian market. Perhaps look for smaller markets in your home area? Make connections with the workers/owners over time and be sincere. I got a lot of good advice when needed and some casual friends, too! It might work for you.

I heard that if you soak them in water at time of harvest for about 30 minutes and make sure all soil is removed. Then use a spoon to scrape it off. It works better than a knife because then you can get up into the crooks and you won't waste much flesh. I haven't tried it myself but just saw a video about it.
