Another question for you Michael....Do you wash the salt water off the the bbs or do you leave them in the salt water and feed that way? Thanks!

Do they tend to make the tank dirtier (dead uneaten shrimp, etc) than commercial food?

I enjoyed the video, and I'm leaning toward finally giving it a try, but I do have one question. It may be a stupid one, but I've always believed it's better to ask a stupid question than to make a stupid mistake because I didn't ask. When you feed the baby brine shrimp to the fish with the syringe, do you pull them straight out of the container we saw you drain them into? So you're putting that salt water into your fish tanks?
@MichaelsFishRoom
@MichaelsFishRoom Жыл бұрын
Good question! Yup, never had an issue.

Do you wash off your bbs before you add into your fish tanks? Can't you use Aquarium salt to hatch them?
@MichaelsFishRoom

You can if you want to pay for it, and no I do not rinse them. What I do in the video is exactly what I do.

Would these be good to feed to bristlenose or does the baby brine shrimp always stay afloat? How long should the light be kept on them? Is live brine shrimp more beneficial than frozen?
@MichaelsFishRoom

No, too high in protien.

I would just add that depending on your water pH, you might need to add a little baking soda to bring the ph up. My tap comes out at 7.6 and that's not high enough for them to hatch. Idk why that is, but without baking soda mine won't hatch at all. Great video as always!
@MichaelsFishRoom

Mine is 6.8-7. I don’t use anything other that what I said in the video. What brand eggs?
@lowes1524
@lowes1524 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelsFishRoom I have used two brands of eggs recently, San Francisco Bay, and Brine shrimp direct (whatever the 80% hatch rate is) neither would hatch without baking soda. Could the baking soda be affecting something other than ph???? Hmmmm🤔🤔🤔🤔

Nice video. I’m old old school. 1/2 Gal pickle jar. NO LIGHT. Ambient room temp only (73-75). I use water softener salt (do not use water softener salt with any additives or rust preventers). “Brine Shrimp Direct” brand BBS eggs. Light aeration. 30 hours. Perfect hatch every time. Let the BBS settle and siphon out with a piece of airline tubing.

@@MichaelsFishRoom Not at all the way I do it. Search for Father Fish Micro Worm Culture on KZbin easy piecy as we say in South Africa. It doesn’t stink at all. I also show my cultures on my small KZbin Channel just search for Johann Enslin. I’m taking delivery of a custom made 600 litre tank tomorrow and I’m looking very much forward getting my hands wet and dirty. Best wishes and kind regards

I make bbs everyday in a water bottle that didn't cost $50. Most people over do it with the salt; a cheap hydrometer will help. I strain the shrimp and rinse the salt off because I keep mystery snails. I use a teaspoon of kosher salt and Epsom salt, a pinch of baking soda (ph-8) and one drop of bleach; to kill any bacteria. I use a heater at 80-82 and they hatch in less then 20 hrs. The strainer is a very fine ss mesh, very fine. I tried a few strainers and wound up making my own. I use a cheap led light that's on the whole time. I buy the eggs from the source , I can't afford to buy from a middleman like Aquarium Co-Op, I don't have disposable money. I'll have the eggs for a long time so I keep them in the freezer. It's the yoke sack that we want our fish to eat; so the shrimp must be eaten soon after they hatch. They're pretty much useless as food, once the yoke is gone.

I use solar salt for hatching. It's about as cheap as you can get, like $8 for 40lbs. Just make sure you use 'natural crystals' and not any of the softener pellets with additives. I put 3 heaping TBS in the Ziss hatcher with 1 tsp baking soda. Been using solar salt every day for a few years now. Never had a problem with hatch rates. I do ambient temp (78f in my fish room), and the only light they get is whatever is in the room.

I am feeding brine shrimp to a couple of my tanks with a small DIY hatchery. I use the A.C.O. brine shrimp eggs and I use sea salt ( cheap at Walmart) and a pinch of baking soda. Do you think the bristle nose fry get any benefit from feeding brine shrimp if so I will be ordering a Ziss hatchery?
@MichaelsFishRoom

I think so, but just a little as too much protein is no bueno.

I drain my Ziss hatchery with a clear vinyl hose. I put a few coils in the end (kind of like how you would wind up a garden hose). The coils are positioned vertically alongside a pitcher with the loose end inside the pitcher. When I drain the Ziss, the eggs shells (being the last thing to siphon out) get stuck in the coils and don't make it into the pitcher. I use this technique (kind of discovered it accidentally) so that I don't have to worry about forgetting to shut off the spigot (which I do quite often -- getting old!). it does sound like I'm overthinking/over-engineering this, but honestly, like I said, I discovered this by total accident. The only reason I coiled the tube was because it was too long and I was too lazy to cut it to length. The only reason I found out the egg sells stay in the coils is because I forgot I was draining it!!! The only reason I was using the hose is because I was too lazy to stand there holding the pitcher!
