By your description of weight transfer equating to friction equating to heat, then the repeated motion of swerving side to side by those same rules applies heat as well to the sides of the tire.

No, same rules do not apply when riding in zigzagues. The tire is just touching the ground with a different patch of rubber, there is no extra effort and no increased friction. You can test it with your hands imitating the surfaces.

@@teonesterov9141 actually the friction changes when u move side to side because of the angles of the bike relative to the center of mass, furthermore u are turning so new forces come in play. (Physicist here🙂)

Swerving side to side on a motorcycle doesn't increase or decrease friction it moves the point of contact around the tire. Unless you're doing a full "straight line weave" it doesn't have the same effect it does for a car. Supercar racers are increasing the length of the straight away by swerving back and forth, not just moving the weight from the inside to the outside of the tire.

This channel offers a ton of good information to riders out there. And coming from an experienced rider... The problem only exists when motorcycle riding taken to extreme limits on roads where the general public drives their cars and even trucks! This is NOT a place to be Speed Racer on...as we all very well know by now there are places to actually race, or just ride your beloved bike very hard. They even let you on the track with soft gummies...that way if you're gonna eat it, you won't kill yourself (in most cases) or anyone else for that matter. Let's also not forget that the pros can do what they do "on a track" because they have have been at it since they basically started to walk! So don't try to immitate the pros just because you bought yourself a fast machine! Especially on the streets! Even the pros don't do it!! They know the consequences, and that their career would be out the window... Nothing wrong for an experienced rider to feel a bit of speed on the roads when he or she gets off work, or on the weekends. Especially when you're on a road 🛣️ where no one else is on it for a stretch. But it's not very intelligent to go nuts on a freeway filled with traffic, weaving in and out of traffic at 180mph!! Or invading opposite lanes on mountain passes where it's curve heaven. Because sooner or later you are going down. And worse yet, going down in front of another on-coming vehicle!! So heating tires, yeah, that is smart. To have as much grip as you can. But for some nice sporty riding on the roads, but not all balls out racing on public roads... So remember this, we have all lost friends, and we have all had accidents on our bikes, and hopefully we all have learned from our mistakes. Yes, luck was on our side if you could live to talk about it. We ride because we love our bikes, and simply love to ride. So try and keep it fun but safe. Because dieing is easy, what's difficult is staying alive!!! Safe riding to all✌️

That doesn’t do anything either. To actually scrub in new tires you need more lean angle than that and they need to be up to temp. We do it for our hot lap all the time before a race.

Swerving in the lane is not only putting heat in the side of the tyres that wouldn't happen in a straight line but also it cleans up the side of the tyre again something that won't happen on a straight line. You going need clean hot tyres when you hit the twists. So tell me again how you don't need to swerve about. Oh and also you really don't wanna get a flat spot in the centre of the tyre so swerving on a long straight helps stop flat spots.

Side to side still helps a little with the sides, it’s friction nonetheless since you’re making a little more of the sides come into contact with the road like in a corner. Acceleration and braking works best for the middle section of the tire though, the extremities will need some corners.

If im stuck behind a car going slow, instead of being unhappy and impatient, assuming theres no traffic coming up behind that might be confused, then I’ll do the side to side swerve. It adds fun to a boring position, serves as swerving practice, and I think it helps the tires wear more rounded. Rather than wearing a flat face into the tire

Used to race a bunch and always did side-to-side in the warm-up lane like everyone else. Once I got a bit older and started measuring tire temp, I realized how dumb I was. Mostly I think I did it to calm my nerves before heading out on the track. Forget the brakes, just ride a reasonable rate then pick it up.

A simple thought experiment to figure this out: Imagine what would happen to the bike on a slippery surface. You would skid/slip both when braking and accelerating AND when swerving from side to side. It’s not that complicated. There’s mainly two things heating up the tires while driving; Friction and air compression. I don’t understand how some would think that a bike leaning into a curve wouldn’t apply these forces to the tires
@eddiem163
@eddiem163 Жыл бұрын
Correct me if it’s not right.When the asphalt is 130 degrees the side to side motion is to warm up the outer portion of the of tires ,from my understanding if the outer portion of tire is warm and soft your gonna have way better traction when your leaning.

I'm new to bikes but I do know that for F1 drivers, the weaving left and right generates much less heat than just repeatedly braking hard. That heats up the brakes which then radiates out to the tires. I'd imagine something similar happens with sport bikes.

Like adobe said 1-2 is good. But take it easy first few corners, then slowly pick up the pace. On track the students we coach without warmers we just take for a slow/medium pace around for 1-2 laps then we pick it up. And they are all mostly on basic street tires. You’d be surprised how well even street tire grip once properly warmed up.

if you ride to the canyon the tires are already hot enough. hopefully, you aren't running slicks on the street, modern street tires don't need that much effort to get enough temp. softer carcasses compared to track slicks mean they get heat just rideing. if you stop you can just take your glove off and feel the tire and feel if its hot. fairly warm is like 100f witch is about it.

Bad advice, braking hard in a straight line will put heat in the center of the tyre, but not much heat on the edges, this isn't just my opinion, its a fact, in motogp there's a race track in Germany that has 10 lefts but only 4 rights, so the left side of the tyre heats up more than the right, so even though they use tyre warmers on the opening laps they're at a higher risk of crashing on the right handers because there's more heat on the left side of the tyre, plus they'll also usually use a tyre that's softer on the right side, you can literally verify this yourself, just ride for a while in a straight line and then stop the bike and take your gloves off and feel your tyre, the tyre will be warmer in the center than on the edges

@Jarv263

They don’t affect riders like him, but when you start to lean your bike over in corners it puts more downwards pressure on your tires, so a cold tire will have less grip compared to a warm tire.

All points were very good points but rubber doesn’t conduct heat very well, only where the heat is applied to, so yes while speeding up and applying brakes to heat up the middle contact area is a good method. The wobbling I feel helps loosen up and soften the rubber towards the outside so there’s no chance for low siding it if there’s a slight loss in traction for whatever instance. Safe riding!
