This video is a shortened version for our article- How To Help A Child With Dyslexia At Home.
You can see the full and detailed article at
www.bestkidsso...
How to help a child with dyslexia at home can be extremely frustrating. Especially for a child that is trying to read and comprehend the written word. Reading is difficult enough as it is let alone adding additional hardships to the reading experience.
Although, dyslexia is not only a reading difficulty but a spelling, phonics and comprehension struggle. In my classroom, I have seen first hand the issues that can occur when a child is dealing with dyslexia.
The good news is with the proper interventions and skills a child can learn ways to help mediate the difficulties that come with a disability.
As a classroom teacher, we are trained and have resources to help guide our students in the classroom but as parents, it might seem like a daunting task to try to help your child at home with their dyslexia struggles.
This will be your guide to How To Help A Child With Dyslexia At Home.

I suffer dyslexic, it was so tough and rough for me growing up. It was even worse because my family. My parents are not educated and have no idea what was wrong with me. They just told me that I am a dull child that doesn't want to learn. I had to struggle all through primary school, it was a priest that helped me and four out i was a dyslexic. Even now that I am a graduate, I still find it difficult with some spellings and pronunciation and sentence structure. I am a teacher now, and I help out kids that I noticed struggling like I did. It is a gradual process, all they need is love and care. Don't judge or be hard on them if you have one at home.

I am a retired Home Health Aide, this is just like working with a stroke patient my son is autistic I beg and asked for help with my son. I see the difference with my son because I read with him and introduced him to sight words, nouns and action words. I see the difference in his behavior. .

It's not how they SEE the letters, it's how they don't HEAR the sounds. The different structure of the brain causes them to miss sounds and they are sometimes unable to break the sounds in words down & separate them. Vowel sounds are very confusing to most dyslexic kids. I am a Wilson certified teacher.

My son got diagnosed when he was in grade 4 and his teacher told him that he can’t read and she humiliated him in front of his peers, but we went for different training and I used to get very frustrated, but I learned to calm myself down to build his confidence And to encourage him and to believe in him once I start doing that I start seeing progress as I am move, the model from public school put him in private school that was he was released and he fit it in well and he’s a student service teacher. She has five kids. Four of them were diagnosed also herself she was a huge help now he’s second year university student who wants to become a lawyer do not give up on your child takes a lot of patience and I went through it. I’m still going through with my daughter as well I can see that she’s a struggling some days is frustrating but I’m trying my best. Please try your best that’s all I needed for those kids to accomplish. Don’t you ever think that your child cannot be a doctor a lawyer, or whatever is out there yes, a cat my son is an A+ student he has devices he doesn’t have to write or read the device or read to him, he can use the device to write for him as well. Thank you.

I am very impressed with your dedication to your son and his education. I've always said... the number one predictor of a child's success in school is the priority that the parent puts in education and you are modeling for him just that. You are exactly right, there are so many technologies now that will benefit him and with help in his cognitive studies as well as he works on his emotional intelligence he will be an amazing student as well as a person. Well done!

Hi. I teach English to an 11-year old boy as a second language who is suffering from dyslexia. In order to encourage him for the importance of spelling, for example, when he misreads the word "there" like "three" or "tree", I tell him "Look, all these letters and their positions in a word must make sence. When you don't notice the letters and their orders, you might misread, mis-spell and misunderstand, as you've just done".

I'm so sorry to hear that. Teachers are so incredibly important to the growth of children but when teachers act like that it's devastating to a child psyche. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

My son is 8 years old. He is going to do 2nd grade over again because of dyslexia. He’s not getting the help he needs at school and we’re now moving him to another school that is well aware of his dyslexia. He got tested again and he showed HIGH levels of dyslexia. He also shows dyslexia when he speaks and with his pronunciation. I am trying to help him adjust to it at home and I have some games to do with spelling and reading at home. Any suggestions with anything?

Hi @nilzabento1143, I've taken the time to consult with some colleagues and delve into some research to provide you with the best recommendations. It's worth noting that many of the strategies for dyslexia are applicable to both adults and children. Phonemic awareness, for instance, plays a crucial role in assisting those with dyslexia. For a deeper understanding, I've written an article detailing the most effective methods to enhance phonemic awareness. You might find it beneficial: Unlock Best Methods For Elevating Phonemic Awareness www.bestkidssolutions.com/best-methods-for-phonemic-awareness Additionally, the International Dyslexia Association has a dedicated section for adolescents and adults with dyslexia. It's a great resource: Adolescents and Adults with Dyslexia dyslexiaida.org/adolescents-and-adults-with-dyslexia I hope these resources prove helpful for your friend. Remember, every step forward is progress, and I'm here to support you both on this journey. If you have any more questions or need further guidance, please don't hesitate to ask. Wishing you and your friend all the best!

My 2 year old can "read" better than my older child. We have just been working on blending 2 letters. Like ab or ma. He switches the letters around every time. Like ba and am. Or if they are beside each other he will move one letter from another word like abm. It's hard on him and we read together every single day.

That is so good that you are practicing often. Many times with dyslexia repetition and practice is key. Make it fun and take it slow and you will see improvement!

I did some research and most folks with Dyslexia are able to drive without issue other that reading the signs. I did hear that sometimes it can be hard for some with Dyslexia to determine their right and left which could be confusing you while driving?
