Hello Dr Barbera, I'm a pediatric OT, since 2010. This is my first time running into you. And I HAVE TO TELL you I COMPLETELY AGREE w your opinion on the approach to communication! Thank You for saying everything you said! Most of my families w AAC/PICS & other methods of communication don't &/or forget to also maintain goals of using verbal communication. For some reason my SLP colleagues often also forget/don't manage the Verbal Communication Goals along w Alternative Communication. Us helpers have to work within an Ideal World & Realistic World when we choose client goals. It's hard to navigate. These poor parents have so much on their plate! There's so much therapy homework to juggle!

Thank you for this video , all professionals were advising us about AAC device since diagnoses age 3.10 years so one month after ABA she started saying words now she’s 5.5 years I would say minimally verbal I don’t use non verbal term as she communicate with one word level through her days with lots of scripting phrases of songs and echolalia . She hates AAC device when we tried in school and they saw that she wants to engage verbally more than cards or device we just follow her lead hopefully she will be come fully verbal

We are happy about her progress now she’s 6 and she can request I want+item sometimes with prompting, but she’s working on it , more words and less echolalia . Able to answer some simple questions after training and no visual aids . Her respective language increased and following. complex orders instructions is progressing..

I totally agree. My son says sounds and I just know he can form forms. I didn't want to distract from verbal communication with signing or devices but train and encourage his words to come out. New subscriber God Bless you

Hey Mary my 5 years old makes sounds occasionally as you mentioned sometimes he even moves his lips mimicking my words without sounds . Sometimes he tries to scream but there’s no sound but mostly there is sounds . Occasionally he would also do verbal stimming with sound. He used to say 1 or 2 words but he regressed

Hi Mary, my grandson is 4 1/2 and just got diagnosed with level 3 severe autism. He is mostly non verbal and makes sounds such as humming or droning. Is it too late to hope that he will be able to talk? He has said a few words for his mom and sister.

I need advice. My gf nephew is stage 3 ASD. He and his mother have been staying with us due to her boyfriend, who is her brother, passing away. He has his days where we will whine for no apparent reason. He’s nonverbal, but I heard him only say two words, “no” and “hey.” I got frustrated because he whined when I tried to sleep after work. I feel he does the whinnying because he wants attention. Is there anything I can do to handle this situation better? I know my girlfriend cares about him dearly. I care about him dearly as well. I suggested getting him some picture books and starting to read to him. He only wants to watch KZbin, which is not a good idea. From researching, I think he’s having sensory overload from the content. I noticed he would laugh if someone got hurt or something terrible happened. He recently started walking and kicking the door open. He was trying to bite his brother, and he tried biting me as well. How can I handle this behavior? This is new to me and has been an adjustment for me. Do you have any advice?

I work with a 9/0 autistic child who is considered to be non verbal, and who has very limited vocalizing skills. He can say words such as Ma and Wow, and after watching this video I am thinking that when he says the word Ma I will immediately point to a picture of his Mom on the AAC device, or by actually point to his Mom when she happens to be there, and then try to build on that. He has his device and I do not believe that the speech therapist has worked with him on vocalizing.

So cool to hear from your story. I'm mostly nonspeaking or unreliably speaking. I say random words sometimes but don't mean to say my speech mostly consists of two words that I repeat as a way of stimming but I don't communicate through speech so that's why I see myself as mostly nonspeaking. I am fully reliant on AAC and typing to communicate

I find it very disheartening when I am attracted to your videos because I think they might meet my grandsons needs when there is very little actual try this, and lots of referral to paid courses and lists of your qualifications. Sorry moving on to some other options, my family doesn’t have the resources to buy courses and I think your video titles are somewhat click bait and misleading.
