A roundtable discussion, moderated by Christopher Chu, MD, of Atlanta Allergy & Asthma, focused on disparities in the diagnosis and care of food allergies. Dr. Chu was joined by Mohamad Y. Tawila, MD, of Allergy and Asthma Associates of Michigan; Denise Powell, MD, board-certified pediatrician, Climate and Health Equity Fellow, and a Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholar; and Sahiti Musti, MBBS, MS, physician and consultant.
In this segment, the panelists discuss emergency preparedness in case of food allergy exposure, including what patients need to be prepared and how health care providers can get involved in creating allergy action plans and kits. They also explore potential issues that providers may face in helping patients create allergy action plans, such as issues with insurance coverage or shortages of critical tools like EpiPens. They also discuss the recent Food and Drug Administration approval of Neffy, the first nasal spray approved to treat anaphylaxis, and how this new treatment can be added to food allergy action kits.
