I tried your kick serve tips today on the tennis court and they work! Only thing is they're not very powerful serves - is it just a case of hitting it harder? This I find difficult if I'm brushing the ball.

Best kick serve instruction out there and I have seen many videos demonstrate this. None of the others address the bent or straight arm after contact as being straight like Federer or bent like Thiem. So when I was dong it straight arm, I thought all this time I was doing it wrong. I wanted to add a few more things, after I originally posted this yesterday. All of these other videos talk about having to throw the ball into the court, but this instructor makes a point that you might want to throw the ball over your head above the baseline instead of throwing it out in the court. He explains all that. That's another aspect of the kick serve that people get hung up on.

I could not figure out why my kick serve was more like a slice. I used a ball with different colors and noticed how it was spinning. You explained it clearly. I find the hardest part is getting the correct contact with the arm going diag. and the racket getting the topspin. I was having my arm go with baseline and not getting any power. Practice time!

That was a very informative lesson Nick. I have to develop a kick serve because I’m one of those people who taps the ball on my second serve and I also double fault way too much. I can’t tell you how many matches I lost because of double faults. At my age I now play mostly doubles ( men’s and mixed) and it’s embarrassing for me to give away points and matches because of double faults. Hopefully I’ll see some improvement watching and studying this video. Thanks for sharing this and all your videos.

Nice video. I am surprised you recommend flat serves before kick to beginners. Once I learned kick, it made me so relaxed so that even on days if my flat serve is off I can rely on the kick to stay in the game. If it's not a croatian secret, how is the leg thrust on the kick serve? In your legs video, you talk about how snapping/twisting the torso propels the feet off the ground, but most kick serves you stay more sideways... to my eyes, it seems like pros drive into the court w/ flat serves whereas w/ kick they get more air under their feet. Is it more leg usage in kick?

Hi Nick, Awesome video! As far as staying sideways is concerned, the best trick is to keep and finish with the racket on the side of your hitting arm after contact with the ball. As a right-handed player, I'm always focused on finishing on the right side with the racket pointing down next to my right leg. This is very helpful in particular for recreational players who tend to turn the torso too early, including myself, if the racket does not finish on the side of your dominant arm. Keep up the good work! Best wishes, Joern

Grerat video! What is the reason for ending the serve with the racket tip downwards and the elbow upwards? I have been more like "hammering" my kick serve. Both will result in pretty much the same racket motion, with the tip pointing downwards, even though the racket is having different angles. Played with a tennis trainer and on competition level for 9 years but no one told me to do it like you do it. I am having pain in my elbow after serving. I think the reason is that I am overstretching my elbow on the serve, since I am hammering my serve my elbow will need to dampen the racket motion. My question boils down to: are there any other benefits from ending with the elbow upwards than just saving the elbow? Really looking forward to try this out, thanks!
@IntuitiveTennis5 жыл бұрын
Oscar, not sure this will save the elbow. In my experience elbow pain is caused by groundstrokes and not the serve. I’m not sure what you mean by hammering the serve. It sounds dangerous. At the end of this video I give some options on the finish here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKayi6aPrtd4r5I
@oscarericsson20255 жыл бұрын
It is like I am hammering on a wall, finishing with a strait arm and the elbow pointing more to the grund. Really hope and think this is going to help. Cheers
@oscarericsson20255 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the second video. My serve is more like 6:55 in to that video, even when I kick serve. That makes my elbow catch a lot of the motion, thus getting overstretched. Really need to turn my arm and bend the elbow.
@IntuitiveTennis5 жыл бұрын
Oscar, ok now I understand. The problem with your finish is that you are hitting the ball to thin and therefore exerting a lot of energy in trying to produce speed. I recommend in addition to turning the strings at least downwards, also adding a little forward momentum into the swing.
@oscarericsson20255 жыл бұрын
@@IntuitiveTennis Thank you for the replies! Not sure what you mean by turning the strings downwards? Having the string bed pointing to the ground?

yes. best kick serve video. i have been trying kick serve for a few years. but i still facing problem in pronation, racket drop, and also the consistent high n 11 o'clock toss. without high enough toss or racket drop , i feel like i just slice the ball rather than brushing it up. any suggestion ? and i have been doing kick serve without pronation, and i could feel the ball is slow.
@IntuitiveTennis6 жыл бұрын
kit, do not worry about pronation. There are players at the elite level who do not continue to pronate on the kick serve. Check out my pronation video where I discuss in detail why pronation should never be the focus when practicing serves.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp7Vkqdsm9WUbs0 If you are slicing and not kicking the serve there is a chance that you are not staying sideways on the kicker. The serve is a complex series of movements with many variables and it's possible that you suffer from other technical deficiencies. Without having seen your serve all I can do is guess. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Like your video but disagree with your statement around 13:20 that you hit down on serves. Do you not hit up and the leaning forward into the court as well as the natural path of the racket directs the ball downward?
@IntuitiveTennis5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, If you consciously hit up on any serve the ball would not land inside the baseline and would probably hit the back fence. The path of the hand and entire body is down after contact. Because of the sideways positioning of the torso at contact the tip of the racquet is pointing towards the left (for righties). Consequently, while the hand/arm is going down the racquet travels up and over the ball. This is clear to see in slow motion footage.
@gcs78174 жыл бұрын
Thank you .... I’ve been working on this for a while now with some success... Your tip to have the racquet pointed more to the left (as a righty) at contact means that the racquet speed has to be sufficient so that the ball has some spin. By exaggerating the leftward pointing, a good deal of spin can be achieved...
@alenx54556 жыл бұрын
My ball kicks to the right significantly on deuce, I guess im doing something right :D I noticed that the more left the ball toss is the more the ball tends to kick to the right and the less left it is the more it tends to kick up. Anyway, great video, you are making amazing videos, I really like your explanations and you have a very good understanding of tennis, keep it up, maybe you can also consider making some videos about tactics, patterns of play etc... of pro players such as Federer and so on, would be cool.

Nik, as usual this is fantastic. Given the diagonal left-to-right motion and keeping your torso from rotating, would you say it's better to do an edge racket drop (like you do)? I have a natural flat racket drop (as you so nicely broke down in your serve racket drop video), but it seems to me that that position is less ideal for that sweeping left-to-right brush up motion you describe here. Thoughts?
@IntuitiveTennis5 жыл бұрын
Andrew, hmmm that’s another really good question. I would say this, I think a kick serve does require a loop, if the racquet fell straight down there would be a problem with acceleration since we are staying sideways. I can’t say that the open face drop with a loop (Federer, Becker, Sampras etc) is inferior to the on edge drop on the kicker. I don’t think it is possible to kick the serve any better than Becker did. So to answer your question, I don’t think it matters.
@andrewhwang89515 жыл бұрын
@@IntuitiveTennis Yes, anecdotally you're right - Becker's kick was tremendous and he was a very open face drop. Maybe I'm less struggling with the concept of open versus edge drop, and more struggling with the racket orientation using the butt cap as a "pointer." In a flat or slice serve, it's easy to understand the racket traveling towards the ball with the butt cap leading the way (cap pointing forward) until the wrist snaps the hoop forward towards contact such that the cap is now facing the sideline. I guess what I'm asking is if a proper kick serve also has this motion of the butt cap pointing forward before squaring up at contact and facing the side, or if it's more like a "backscratch" position with the cap facing the sideline and just swinging up and out from there, keeping the cap facing to the sideline the whole way. (Watching you serve a kicker in slow motion, you do have your cap facing forward to start your swing, then you pronate to square the strings at contact, so maybe that's my answer right there.)
@IntuitiveTennis5 жыл бұрын
Andrew, yes on the kick the butt cap is orientated the same as the flat serve. Check the Raonic kicker at the 4:50 mark in the racquet drop video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKmcnGV9ntBqhM0 It’s positioned the same. Btw I’m totally unaware of the orientation of the buttcap in that phase of the serve. There’s too much acceleration there. Still, it’s interesting to know the intricacies of the serve. Great question!

@@IntuitiveTennis So after many many years of tennis, and about 25 years past my tennis prime (when I was a touring USTA junior), I FINALLY have the beginnings of a kick serve. Just this week, I practiced all you've demonstrated and written, and what do you know... an ad court kicker that went both high and angled off wide. Hallelujah!!! I've literally tried the kicker for decades, and even at one point thought I had it (but in review of video it was really just junk ball slice serve). Thank you!!! You've been kind enough to answer my perhaps overly-cerebral racket motion questions, but rest assured I use those biomechanical concepts as a way of just getting a mental image of what I'm doing. Video shows I do face the buttcap forward (as you showed both in your own serve and Raonic's serve), but to your point, I do that without knowing it. My mental image of what I'm doing just clears my mind and the natural biomechanics take over. Intuitive, no? ;) Anyway, a big thank you. Your video explanations and answers to my questions did more for my kicker than years of lessons with actual real life pros.

From slow motion video replay, it looks like my toss is still not quite 12, but perhaps @ 1. I think that is all I need to succeed with your instruction, because everything is as you've indicated. Thank you! (The kick serve, on the deuce side, is by far the most difficult serve I've practiced. However, I'm all in until it becomes routine!)
