As a bass teacher myself, I really appreciate the careful language around using the natural position for the hand & fingers, as well as the concept of using arm weight and not "gripping."

Great advice Jason! I’ll be sure to share this with my younger students who have challenges with their bow holds.

Thank you for this awesome video! Also glad this video is focused on the French bow hold. Since I teach elementary orchestra, it's hard to find videos that don't confuse kids. Using Essential Elements, it mentions both, and I had a student who decided he liked the German hold (on a French bow...) and refused to try otherwise. This video is great! Excellent language use, too, and not calling it a grip is great!

Thank you so much! I’m in middle school orchestra, and I’ve been having a bit of trouble with the bow hold, but this really helped! Thanks!

Still don’t understand, where is the thumb?😒
@DiscoverDoubleBassАй бұрын
It's a 01:21 that Jason covers. He places his thumb between the wrap and the frog. It's tricky to see the back of the bow where his thumb rests on camera, so Jason points to the spot front of the bow. I hope that helps. We also have lots of bowing lessons which I hope can help discoverdoublebass.com/classical-bowing-technique-lessons
