Wow!! This is so awesome!! My son hasn’t been diagnosed but he has so many traits of a person with ADHD. These tips are most helpful and I appreciate you! I’m gonna try on him what helps me too and that is this: When a thought comes in of something you want/need to do-WRITE IT ON PAPER! Then your brain is free to let go of it! Continual brain dumps! The BEST!

Thank you for this video! I'm homeschooling my son for the first time this year. I have severe ADHD, or I would have started homeschooling when he started kindergarten. After watching him struggle with virtual school in the spring, I realized that he is also ADHD. He is bright and well behaved at school, so he was just seen as "easily distracted" and "shy". So now I'm on a mission to find a way to teach in a way that works with both of our deficits, and results in him loving to learn. Your video has sent me down a wonderful rabbit hole of homeschool tips, tricks and all things homeschool!

Thank you for sharing. This is my second year to homeschool my grandson because of Covid and we found out within the past year that he has ADHD. So the source of teaching that we use is A.C.E. That has different paces for each subject. I’ve found he does better to keep the writing things shorter so I will split one lesson in English or Literature and Creative Writing in half or thirds depending on how long that one is. These also have a short reading section with a few questions to answer in most like science and social studies that he does very well in. For math I have to take it slow when a new concept comes up like borrowing. I had to use counter blocks for him to visualize what the borrowing concept is. My hardest thing to deal with is the way he constantly has to move or act out what we are reading.

I have heard great things about A.C.E. It sounds like things are going pretty good for your guys.

perfect description of my 12 yo. I have 3 additional younger children. my 12yo also loves to type!! he took iew at coop 2 years ago and writing was agonizing to him but out of nowhere i saw him type an entire page! It blew me away. My son is extremely creative as well and he loves making Google slides with legos and other characters and I simply love it. We now live in NY state where homeschooling is extremely regulated. We moved here a year ago from Texas where homeschooling was so much more flexible and we've always homeschooled. But I am so grateful to stumble upon this video. it encourages me to keep going. We had issues with math and while I'd prefer to teach my older 2 together, there have been tears because now my 12yo is answering all the questions and my 9yo daughter starts crying thinking she's not smart enough. It's forever a learning experience! Anyway God bless

This video was very helpful, thank you! One thing that I have to do with my son is tell him exactly what tasks we need to get done today, before we start anything. If he feels I’m just pulling out more and more material he has a meltdown, whereas if he goes into it knowing what we need to do he’ll be more likely to do it.

My son has just requested that I do exactly what you are talking about. That is a great tip. Thanks for watching.

Oh my goodness this couldn’t have been a more perfect timing. My daughter has ADHD and I knew very young that she did bc my husband does and I could see the symptoms. We struggled for awhile trying to find something that fit and we doing GRH. She loves it but lately has been struggling. I will use all of these tips! She said one way that helps her is to pretend to be whatever she is learning. This allows her to get up and get that burst of energy out. We are also in space and she zoomed around the room pretending to be a comet. She also does not like to write so I have her write a couple words and I’ll do the rest. Thank you so much for this video! We are trying the tips out tomorrow!!!

This is great! We just decided on homeschool bc our school is starting virtually and that was awful for my ADHD rising 3rd grader. I love the idea of highlighting the problems for him to do and that if he shows that he knows it then there is no need to keep going over it. So glad I found your channel.

Your son and my son are so similar! I think that makes your videos so relatable and useful for us. I love how you let him make a movie with some characters to show what he learned for the day. That is one I will definitely try today. I also have my son dictate to me while I write and it shows me that he does have the knowledge that his former school teachers told me he lacked. One thing that I notice my son loves is a list that he can check off his school work. I thought it might overwhelm him but instead I think there is a satisfaction from checking off what he has completed. Usually he takes his list and goes to work while I am working one on one with his sisters.

My daughter is 8 and is autistic (high functioning) and sometimes shows adhd-like symptoms. I have landed in the same place as you through trial and error: unit studies with Brave Writer strategies. We will be trying Gather ‘Round in March and I am really looking forward to it. Everything you mentioned works for my daughter too. For math, I cannot give her the whole sheet either. Usually I will do a couple problems and then have her do a couple. We also take frequent breaks and use reinforcers. Thanks for your videos!

This touches my heart deeply, my son is in third grade. We don’t have much problem in schooling but outside of schooling is where the adhd sets in the most. We are seeing a psychologist this year ❤️ I love the narration too you shared we do this but after I’m done reading, maybe I need to try smaller bits. He can tell me what I read but briefly with little detail Math is my sons favorite subject we use the same curriculum he does an entire weeks worth in a day but when it comes to transitioning back into schooling from a break that’s where we get that overwhelmed feeling when looking at the worksheet! Great tips!!

Thank you so much for watching. We have issues outside of schooling as well-impulse control and easy to anger.

I do these things and try different ways, and my son has the same issues IN school and outside of school. Its easy for the subjects he loves but that's not all of them. I'm not sure if its me struggling more or him. I feel like I'm at fault!!

I've just been watching every video I can find on this topic and yours is the best, most concise (super important because I also have ADHD), most practical video out there. We are struggling the most with taking in what he hears during our read a loud time. He is given freedom to move and do things with his hands but he still struggles to focus. Narrating has helped a little but he feels like he's being tested (which is not at all how I frame it). Are there any other tips for this issue specifically? We are pretty charlotte mason influenced, so read aloud feature heavily in our homeschool.
@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the sweet comment. My son started to have trouble remembering what we read so I bought him a little notebook. As we read a paragraph or two, he will draw a quick picture to help him remember. At the end of our reading, he can use the pictures to help retell. It has been working well so far.

I’ve been doing similar things with my son but now he’s in sixth grade and I’m wondering how to transition him to be prepared of what will be asked of him in high school and then college. Has anyone been able transition these tips for older grade levels?
@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife3 жыл бұрын
We still use these same techniques in middle school. I don’t worry too much about high school and college. What I have learned through research is that when there is a need, the child will learn it much faster.

How did you learn all these tips ? Did he see a counselor or therapist
@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife4 жыл бұрын
No, he hasn’t been to a therapist or counselor. After his diagnosis, I searched the internet, watched some KZbin mamas, and learned all I could about it. Project Happy Home has a wonderful playlist all about ADHD. I am learning new stuff every day. A lot we have learned through trail and error. What works one day, may not work the next. The things I mention in this video have successfully worked for us.
@jagrutishah67324 жыл бұрын
how do you envision him writing essays and such when he is in higher grades, high school and applying for colleges?
@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife4 жыл бұрын
Jagruti Shah he can always type them.
@Olgaleigh4 жыл бұрын
I agree writing has become almost obsolete. It’s not like he won’t be able to write someday and with everything being electronic it’s almost better to get use to the typing. I was so behind in my typing skills bc we had a heavy writing system in middle school I was unprepared for high school :(

Have you thought of him dictating into a voice recorder device (so that he doesn't lose the flow and speed of his thoughts) and then for him to write it all down by himself? Is there a reason you don't ask him to do this? Seems to me that it would help with his spellings, grammar, punctuation and handwriting, which are quite independentof his creative/imaginative skills
@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife4 жыл бұрын
Jagruti Shah I follow Julie Bogart of Brave Writer. She says that the most important thing right now is the creativity. The spelling and grammar will come with time. We already work on spelling, grammar, and punctuation when we do copy work. He also does handwriting practice twice a week. The voice recorder is a good idea.
