So true I live on a suburban block. Many years ago I lived on acres and had a small farm. When I moved to our small block I asked myself what made me feel like I was a farmer and the answer was Me. It was my mindset that made me feel like a farmer So now I do everything I can in my back yard to farm. My yard isn’t filled with grass it’s a small farm. We have incubators and hatch out chickens and ducks and quails and sell them. I grow food for ourselves. There is so much you can do on a small place. Just see yourself as an urban farmer.

Hello new friend, Patricia! Your words mean so much to me, and thank you for sharing them to encourage others as well. It sounds like you have maximized your property to its full and still value your smaller homestead as much as your former property. I truly believe this lifestyle is largely about the values that drive your life, consumption, etc and from there out factors such as land come in. Are you also into canning/food preservation? Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

Yes! We are kindred spirits indeed! As Jess from Roots and Refuge says, “turn your waiting room into your classroom” and I’m doing just that. I’m sooo excited about my farm dream but I’m also not naive that there are tons of skills, habits, experiences I need and can start right now. I don’t mind the journey towards the dream because canning, small space gardening and projects I have coming up this year are making my everyday so rewarding as I balance a job and city life with my urban homestead! Thank you for subscribing and introducing yourself! I’m very happy to connect with you!!!

Hi Saran! Yes, the mindset component is the biggest obstacle when you have a farm dream but your immediate surroundings are far from it. When I started a taking small steps I realized just how much you can do in a space space, with little time and in between working. After all, I’m not in a race, and when the move comes I want it to be right. Are you also on a townhome? Apartment? Have you tried canning?

I love your phrase "homesteading mentality". We are such kindred spirits! So impressed with your homemade fabric pots! I added it to my list of winter projects. I have plenty but the ones that are a couple seasons old are now starting to deteriorate a bit so being able to replace my homemade ones with a cheaper alternative and in the process I'm sure I can reuse pieces of the old ones.

I am a suburban city dweller practicing All of the homesteading practices I can manage. I have gardened my property corner to corner with both warm weather and cool weather crops in my 7B zone. And I have raised and bred rabbits primarily indoors. I have also used only leaf compost as input other than seed. And all of my methods are hand tools.

And we're learning new skills and trying to become more self sufficient. Our garden didn't do too well, but we learned a lot for next season. Idyllic and inspirational! We are definitely kindred spirits, only I don't seem to have quite as much energy to put into projects. Like I have long espoused...you can eat an elephant as long as you eat him one bite at a time. My "project time" seems to be in the fall. I have lots of projects lined up...fruit in the freezer to preserve into jams and jellies, meat to pressure can in assorted ways...but I have other projects in front of those to tackle first!

I’ve got a covered balcony and two south facing windows. I can’t be self sufficient here, but I can be self sufficient in a few things. I can grow my own herbs and lettuce. I can also grow radishes, leeks, carrots, spinach, microgreens and green onions. It may not be all my food or produce, but it still puts a dent in the grocery bill and keeps me in fresh vegetables when we might not be able to afford them otherwise. That’s motivation enough for me to grow as much as I can in the space available. If I play my cards right with my current space I might be able to get some lemongrass out there too. When we move, hopefully I will have more outdoor space and can expand. One day I’ll have my dream of an outdoor staircase with potted herbs lining one side that leads to my own personal food forest complete with an orchard. Until then, I’ll just have to learn what I can with the space I have, so I can keep that good forest alive once I have it.

Hi Julie! Thanks for saying hello! It’s so nice to meet a fellow small space homesteader. Isn’t there so much joy in using/turning what you do have to create a more sustainable life? Two years ago if you don’t be I’d be a worm farmer k would’ve looked at you crazy, now I don’t know where I (or my garden) would be without them! Worm farming is so discreet, the product you get is the best kind of fertilizer and you don’t have to pay the incredibly high prices for castings. You’ll love it! Thanks for saying hello! Are you also into food preservation, like canning?!

@@BecomingaFarmGirl Thank you for answering. I have not done canning. I am afraid of doing it wrong and killing my husband and I. I do dry and freeze everything. That’s so exciting Julie! I’m so excited to hear you’ll be growing even more herbs this year. Remember to harvest frequently to encourage more growth. I love using excess to make herb butters to freeze and use throughout the year (sage and garlic butter is amazing but you can blend a number of herbs together). I totally get your initial reservations around canning, it took me a few years and lots of reading and a few classes to get totally comfortable. Best of luck with your garden this year😀🌱

Don’t dispose, friend! I’d I were in your shoes I would definitely be an indoor Aero gardener. They have indoor grow pods that allow you to grow full size plants and veggies without relying on natural window light. You can often find them at thrift sales or Facebook market place. The joy and what your learn even growing a little is better than not having anything at all. You could also join a community garden if that makes sense for you. Thank you for stopping by!
