I liked when the akule would come into the boat harbors and stay all day long. Jigging or whipping is my thing. I like filling up my cooler or buckets up with akule. I get akule fever when the fish are biting good. Its such a adrenilin rush to hook up and land the akule. I grew up in haleiwa and lived near the boat harbor so i would go there every chance i could while the akule was still around. Oh how i love fishing!!!!!

I tried fishing when the sun goes down but no fish. Right about 10:00pm, the akule and menpachi starts to appear slowly. What is the best time to catch these guys?
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
Really depends on your area. My best time to catch is a hour after sundown to 10pm, them 3am to a hour before sunrise. 10pm-3am is really slow for me. But i live on Oahu. Each island/area may be different.

Hello Chris, I went out fishing again, this time across from the Hawaii Electric Plant just past Koalina on the rock pier. I could see all of the Akules in a big school just swimming around. Even saw some monk seals fishing too......they are way better fishermen than I. I spent hours out there with no luck. My rig setup was a silver swivel with a 5/8 sinker, 7 foot leader with 6lb fluorocarbon, green soft glo bead, red bead, size 1 trapper hook, and various lures from the strips to grubs (CHL). I started out fishing during the day with no hits, while others kept pulling them in, and finished at night with some glo grubs that I felt had a few nibbles. I saw a lot of different rod action out there from various fishermen and my question to you is, what rod/wrist action do you use? As always great videos and thanks. Zee
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
What you're using would be great for night where using a shorter leader & heavier line won't make a difference as they won't see it. First for daytime akule fishing i prefer black swivels over silver, less visible. I get mine at J&E Fishing Supply. A 7ft fluoro leader is to short for day, a 15ft leader is better. A 3lb fluoro works well. I use 1/4 or a 3/8oz lead egg. Smaller in size & less visible. If you need heavier use tungsten eggs, much heavier/denser then lead. My mainline is 2-3lb mono. Like i said if you go at night you can use shorter leaders to heavier lines as the fish won't see it. Daytime requires more finessing as they can see the rigs and are sensitive to that. What you're using now will hook fish daytime there like taape to papio. Heard that place has been crowded so i stay away. Hate crowded areas. Most local anglers have a akule/halalu rig on stanby. A 6-8ft light action whipping rod, like a Fenwick. A 1K/2.5K/3K spinner, like a Shimano Stradic with 2-3lb clear mono mainline is almost standard for most local whippers. Good luck Zamoran:)
@zamoranthornton72877 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips! I'm catching more fish everyday thanks to your videos and advice. You mentioned that a Shimano Stradic reel would be ideal for Akule fishing. What would you suggest for a rod? Also, I noticed that reel costs a pretty penny, what makes it better than the $30 reels. Thanks again Chris!
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
Actually the Stradic is ideal for Akule fishing, but not necessary. The fish are mostly under a pound thus most any "small" spinner will do. But some anglers prefer smooth action with good cranking power if something else hits. It's nice to know that you own a unit that is known to perform when you need power & is recognized to be internally superior to most spinners. I have 2 spoosl for my 3K. One with 10lb JB braid for whipping and the other 3lb mono for Akule/Halalu. I like the Okuma T-40X Steelheads for whipping but Okuma discontinued that line because most mainlanders didn't care for it. Heard the Assassin rods are well liked for whipping.
@zamoranthornton72877 жыл бұрын
Hello Chris, I followed your advice and I caught 4 Akule back to back. I was using a 12 foot leader (2lb test), green glo beed, red beed, and a strip bait lure. I also used a hammer bomb as my sinker due to getting hung up my first two casts. I think I have my system down now. Thanks again for all of the advice.

I went fishing for halalu for the first time a few days ago and everyone seemed to be using damashi. They were catching 4 or 5 at a time and I couldn't catch a single one. I was whipping with a 12 ft, 4 lb test leader with a strip color similar to what everyone else was using. I was trying to mimic what everyone else was doing, yet I couldn't catch anything. Any suggestions?
@ScubaChris8 жыл бұрын
Catching Akule/Halalu from shore is most challenging! Depending on area they may only hit green over blue or green with red. Halalu (young Akule) are extremely finicky. Sometimes a 15-20ft leader is required. Or you may have to use a 2lb fluorocarbon leader over a 4lb. The smaller the hook the better. I watch others "undulate" their rod to send vibrations to the lure. I find using a LineDancer will produce hits far more then this. In one of my videos at night during a full moon i caught dz's using a LineDancer while my friend caught only a few using the traditional method. Also depending on the reel your using you have to learn the right retrieval speed as well. This comes from familiarizing yourself with your equipment. Damashi does work. I prefer the small CHL "Scuba Blues" & "Mune" Minnows on MZ#12 chrome colored hooks (not the gold ones as at that size they're soft and bend easily on a decent hit).

Do Akule bite moonlight nights? and what time of the night is best to fish for Akule?
@ScubaChris Жыл бұрын
I've fished during a full moon & still catch, but not a lot. Darker is better. Just got to find a good spot. Takes time & effort as everyone fishes differently using different gear in different locations. I use a LineDancer & because of that i still catch while those with me can't.
@allanfranco44643 ай бұрын
@@ScubaChris WHAT IS A LINE DANCER?
@ScubaChris3 ай бұрын
@@allanfranco4464 It's a very simple device that imparts vibration through your line that reflects on the lure. You can actually feel the vibrations generated through the rod. If you can feel it so can the fish sense it thinking that your lure is a wounded fish.
@ScubaChris8 жыл бұрын
For those interested in what i use my videos are shot using Contour Action Cams. The rod is a Okuma TX-40 10'9" Salmon Steelhead. Reel is a Shimano Stradic CI4 4K with 270rds of 10lb J-Braid. My choice of grubs are Completely Hooked Lures at www.chlures.com/. I like the AO insulated backpack rated for a 5lb bag of ice +18 cans combined with the camo slingpack. I use uv light emitters to enhance the extended glow grubs. I may list a lot of items but i'm streamlined. I have everything i need in a compact style for "billy-goating" lave cliffs or boulders at night. Mahalo for your subscriptions to my channel & likes:)

what line do you use during day for akule
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
First i prefer rods between 9-11ft with light power ratings. I use 3K Shimanos. I started with a Sustain, then a CI4, but prefer a Stradic. I don't buy 2500 sizes because since the bodies are the same size with the 3000, it makes financial sense to choose the 3K since the spool has higher capacity. I also don't use the 1K because there are predators after the akule that'll hit as well. Having the 3K is the perfect size for me with enough line capacity for long runs & strong enough to handle decent hits. My choice for line is 4lb mono. Use low memory, thinnest diameter. I found Seaguar to be great. Use the smallest swivel you can find with either a 1/4oz or 3/8oz lead egg. Spending some bucks on tungsten egg weights is another good choice as tungsten weights are smaller then lead weights. For leader i use 2lb or 3lb fluorocarbon for halalu or 4lb fluoro for akule. Day usage i go 15ft on my leader. At night it really doesn't matter. My night rigs are 10'9" Salmon/Steelhead rod with a 3K Stradic with 10lb Jerry Brown braid with 12lb fluoro leader. It has handled decent trevally hits to tangled turtles & small rays. Just recently i'm hooked on Trapper Hooks & waiting for the thicker salt water edition.
