Solid state amps and Tube amps have different output coupling and unless specified by the manufacturer matching perfectly impedance is not necessary but in the case of SS amps may hamper performance.

My head says 1 x 16 ohm or 2 x 16 ohm? if I have a cab that has a 4 ohm input and a 16 ohm input obviously I plug into the 16 ohm input. But which output do I use from my head. does it equate to 1 x 16 as in 1 16 ohm speaker ? Does 2 x 16 mean a cab with 2 speakers at 16 ohms.

Correct. I actually have the joyo zombie and it does say “min 8 ohm” which means you can use 8 or 16 ohm. Do NOT use 4 ohm cab tho. Note that if you do end up using a 16 ohm cabinet then it will decrease the power of the head a little bit. The wattage specifically. Nothing to worry about but it will decrease the volume a tad. @Guitaroholic n00b player here - This was a question I have as I search for amps/cabs. _Thanks for posting!_ 2 questions: 1. If my head is 8 ohms with 2 speaker outputs, can I use both outputs into both 8ohm inputs? 2. The speaker cables have to match the head or cab ohm capacity or just head?
@guitaroholic43655 жыл бұрын
iDisOrder not sure what Head you’re running so I’ll answer your first question to the best of my ability. 1. If you have two 8 ohm outputs on the head that would be so you could run two cabinets (full stack). One output and cable to the top speaker cabinet and one output and cable to the bottom cabinet. If you’re only running one cabinet then just run out of one output. 2. A speaker cable is a speaker cable. Doesn’t matter the ohms you’re running. Just don’t use a guitar cable. I hope this helps. That’s for the question and checking out my video. Good luck.

Ira Sherman I just looked up the manual for your Marshall head and looked at pictures of the back panel. That head is rated for 8 or 16 ohms. The proper way to hook it up with a single cabinet (with a speaker cable NOT an instrument cable) would be to select the 16 ohm on the head and put the cabinet selector in mono and plug into the 16 ohm side (right side). Do all this before powering up the amp. Looking at the manual I am with you, I don’t understand why they have the (4).

I recently bought a Marshall MX412A cab and modified my Marshall MG15 practice amp to have a switched output jack, it was very cheap and easy. Now that little amp sounds incredible, a single 8 in the chassis and 4x12’s plugged into the cab. Night and day difference doesn’t even begin to describe the massive difference in sound quality. The shunted output jack was about $6 and now I can plug this little amp into any cab. Unplug and it defaults back to the built in 8” speaker

@riqueledzeppelin4 ай бұрын
The stereo switch is just an additional feature that let you plug two heads/amps in the same cab. You don’t really need the stereo switch when using a single amp. By the way, as your blackstar cab supports 8ohms, you can either connect your cab to the 8ohm output of the amp of the 16ohm output. I prefer the 8ohm, as more power come out of it, but give it a try on both, see what fits you best. Hope it helped!

!!!!! with a 8 ohm solid state amp you can plug into 16 , BUT (NOT with a tube/valve amp !!!!) an 8 ohm tube/valve amp should be plugged into the 4 ohm and not pushed to its limit to make up for lack of resistance , when in 16 ohm it has to work to hard against resistance and can blow capacitors or output transformer.
@PeterDad606 жыл бұрын
When it comes to Tube Amplifiers, you have it bassackwards bassax7045. It's too little resistance that destroys tube amplifiers! Also if you have a tube amp that says "Min. 8 ohms" that means at least 8 ohms. Get it? When it states "8 Ohms Min". that means 'at least 8 ohms' and not less than 8 ohms. But the ohms could be more as in it could also work at 16 ohms (but at half power 1/2 the wattage). People like you by providing false, misleading comments are one of the dangers of learning from KZbin. With respect to the relationship between ohms and watts for a fast easy example have a look at the new Vox Nanotube AC50 heads, every time you double the ohms the the wattage is halved. So at 4 ohms the output wattage is 50 watts. At 8 ohms the wattage output is 25 watts, and at 16 ohms the output is 12.5 watts. Better yet consult/purchase an amplifier handbook and or a speaker handbook.

Not if you don't crank the volume. Several times I have turned on my tube amps with no speaker load attached and let them warm up for five min., then switched off standby to play and heard nothing. Walking, looking behind the amp revealed I had forgot to connect any speakers! I just put the amp back on standby, then plugged in the appropriate speaker to match the ohms output and the amps were fine, I have done this several times. I am always changing what speaker goes to what amp and sometimes I turn on an amp with no speakers attached. I think if you dial up a lot of power with no speaker load and leave it like that for a long while, then yes you shall cause damage.

If you want to hook up in stereo, do you need 2 heads or can you just use both outputs on the head? Thanks for the video.
@guitaroholic43655 жыл бұрын
If you’re head has stereo output (2 output jacks at the same ohms) then yes. I remember I had an old Line6 Spider head that ran stereo outputs.

Gitarzan 66 I’ve been trying to find the Marshall manual for that head but if I’m not mistaken the dual out put on your head would be for running a full stack. One output would run to a top cabinet and the second output would run to a bottom cabinet.

what happens if the amp has two inputs that are 4 ohms
@ef74806 жыл бұрын
You mean 'outputs' ? The cabinet has the 'inputs'. Your amplifier has to 'push' power into a resistance (as in, the speaker coil) , for it to work efficiently. No resistance would allow too much current to be drawn from the amp output and would eventually fry the electronics. An amp's output is designed to push into a MIN resistance ( as in, 4ohms, or 8ohms or 16ohms etc) so as long as the overall cabinet ohms or single speaker ohms resistance is the same as or above the min ohms shown on the amp's output jack, then the amp will work ok. Do not plug into a cabinet or speaker with less than the designed amp outlet ohms figure. This is only for solid state amps as ohms matching is more precise on tube amps.

Could I have the cab switched to stereo and plug two heads in?
@guitaroholic43657 жыл бұрын
YES!!! With this cabinet you can select stereo and you now have 2 - 150watt, 8ohm inputs. It's ironic because I was just thinking about this last night. I wanna buy another JOYO 20watt amp and jam with a buddy through the cabinet together at the same time.
@82ratm7 жыл бұрын
Guitaroholic that’s great, thank you, I’m currently using a 50 watt Laney combo for my “wet” sound (which weighs a tonne) and an Orange Dual terror into a 1x12 cab for my “dry” sound. I’ve just bought a 2x12 vertical Marshall that I’ll get wired so I can run the dual terror through one speaker and I’ll pick up another small lunchbox head to run the wet sound through and do away with the Laney!

Dude. Thank you for this but I'm still confused about the inputs outputs. 1. If I have Mono/Stereo Amp Head, can I either plug it in Stereo and Mono ? 2. 8 Ohms -> 4 Ohms ( wrong ) 8 Ohms -> 8 Ohms ( okay ) 8 Ohms -> 16 Ohms ( okay but speaker cabinets performance reduces )
@guitaroholic43657 жыл бұрын
Akkun 橙黒 If you have a mono/stereo amp then it can be plugged in either way. A Stereo amp like a Line 6 runs 2 speaker cables out the back and into both inputs in the cabinet. Just need to make sure the switch on the cabinet is set to stereo. On this cabinet in stereo it’s 8 ohms per input. If you are running mono it will be a single speaker cable running to the cabinet. Select mono on the cabinet. You have 2 choices. 4 ohm or 16 ohm. You need to know what ohm output your amp is. 4, 8 or 16? 4ohm amp/ plug into 4ohm input on cabinet. Perfectly matched impedance. 8ohm amp/ plug into 16ohm input on cabinet. You won’t notice much difference in the sound but it won’t be as loud. 16ohm amp/ plug into 16ohm input. Perfectly matched impedance.

Same ohms means perfect right ? Thank you !

Akkun 橙黒 Same ohms is perfectly matched and you will get maximum performance out of your amp and speaker cabinet.
@brianmannion70977 жыл бұрын
does the wattage compatibility matter in the cab and tube head you're buying as long as the cab can handle more than the amp head wattage? Also what do you do when using just 1 cab speaker (a 2x12)? Mono or stereo for one cabinet amp connection and do you change/consider any settings before setting or switching a high gain or low setting on the head?
@guitaroholic43657 жыл бұрын
Answer #1: Yes and No! LOL! Wattage will matter depending on how you plan on hooking up the amp. Is your amp Mono or Stereo? What ohm output is the amp? With a lot of amps I've seen there is a selector switch where you can choose the ohm output on the amp 4, 8, 16. This cabinet can handle 300 watt RMS in mono with the input option of 4ohm or 16ohm or 150 watt in stereo with the only input options being 8ohms. To really sum up your first question it doesn't matter if the amps wattage is lower than the cabinet. For instance I just bought a 20watt/ 8ohm output amp and I'm not concerned about blowing speakers or anything like that. I just need to understand what my options are hooking up. If I want to push my amp perfectly then I want to switch to stereo so my input is 8ohms but I will only be running 2 out of the 4 speakers. Or I can switch the cabinet to mono and plug into the 16ohm input. The only difference I've noticed with the sound is it's not as loud and honestly I can barely tell. Answer #2: As far as a 2x12 cabinet I'm not sure what options you have with it. I'm really only trying to explain this Marshall cabinet but my advise would be look at the back input. It should say something and if it doesn't then look online and try to find a user manual. Answer #3: My understanding of high and low gain inputs on amps have to do with pickups (active or passive). I've watched videos where pro players don't pay any attention to which input they are plugging into on those types of amps. It's not going to hurt anything. Plug into either one and experiment for yourself which sounds better with the pickups you have in your guitar. I hope I answered your questions! This stuff can get kind of confusing so if I didn't get all of your questions answered check out some other videos on here. There are a lot of good ones that may answer your questions and much more. It did for me. Thanks for checking out my video.

The only option you have here (because you only have one 8 ohm output on the back of your amp) is to select mono and run into the 16 ohm input of the cab. That's not too bad! But I learned this from McKnight and other sources of my studies over the years. I finally know exactly what's going on thanks to McKnight and you Guitaroholic. Thnx guys, I really appreciate this !

Actually I’ve switched to stereo and ran the cab as a 2X12. This allows me to hear the amp in true form at peak performance. The amp in this video is only 25watt. But it’s a little beast!
