My neighbor had a Buff Orpington go broody, and she swapped the eggs with fake (trainer eggs). A few days later she went up to the farm store and bought 2 Rhode Island red day old chicks. Then she set one in the nesting box for the hen to see/hear. The peeping exited her and she nuzzled it under her (like your hen did to that egg you set by her). She did the same with the second chick, and then took the fake eggs. The hen brooded and raised the chicks as if she hatched them herself. This didn't cause her to resume laying sooner, but it mafe her happy. It also got her to spend less and less time in the nest until she finished brooding the chicks(BTW she brooded those chicks way faster than I did in my brooder box). The chicks had no trouble integrating into the flock. They were born into the flock as far as the hens were concerned.

Only one of my four hen is prone to being broody. The first time it happened, I didn't know what it was about and I let her be. She ended up not so good, losing a lot of weight not eating or drinking, just obsessed with getting back onto the nesting box no matter how many times I removed her. I finally had to break her of it by putting her in a cold bath. This year, at the first sign of broodiness, I stuck an ice pack under her. She didn't care for it, growling and ruffling her feathers but she couldn't move the pack. Within a couple of hours, she was out and about eating, drinking and dust bathing. I had to do it a few mornings in a row but that seems to do the trick. No mess, no stress. I didn't want my poor chicken sitting on unfertilized eggs wasting away. We have no roosters.

The issue I had with a Broody hens on my grandparent's farm was that they would starve laying on their eggs. They would put the feed on the other side of the yard so the chickens would leave their nests more often, but the broody hens would stave themselves sitting on their eggs.

How do I avoid taking the eggs from a broody hen? I have one that is always in the box at feeding time. She hunkers down when I open the box. She misses most of the food and then zooms out of the coop down the run and into the fenced chicken yard. Then later she will follow the other hens and rooster around pecking like normal, but I don't know if it is because I stole her eggs that morning or not. If she gets up and forages during the day then she isn't broody, is that correct?
@alaskaurbanhippie2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you are just catching her everyday while she's laying... if she spends a few hours a day away from the nest box, it doesn't sound like she is broody. That's my experience anyway

@featheredskeptic13014 жыл бұрын
If a chicken clucks and puffs up like that - she's broody. A sick chicken isn't going to do any of this, under no circumstance. If your chicken got sick, she's going to be standing (maybe slightly puffed) with her head retracted to her body and seemingly sleeping. She may also be laying down while doing the same thing, and will refuse to eat, or eat very little. She also isn't going to be very easily prompted to walk away from the spot she currently is at if you approach her, and she's not going to go far before assuming the same stance if she does move. Also, you can see discoloration of the comb and face, and in some serious cases the chicken is going to be very light when you pick it up. Those (especially the last 2) are some very serious signs.

@TheFox8084 жыл бұрын
Sounds like she's not broody, and if she's just started laying then she's probably too young to want to be a mother hen anyway. It'll happen naturally when she's ready. In the meantime, you can eat the eggs. Yes chickens LOVE to eat eggs, but this shouldn't be encouraged otherwise they might start intentionally breaking eggs to eat them. It won't hurt them though.

I think the main reason someone would want to break a broody hen is actually because its not healthy for the hen to sit on a nest all day barely eating or drinking, and if the eggs are infertile its not worth it for the hen. I don’t recommend allowing your hens to be broody. The best way to break a broody hen is to put them in a wire dog crate with food and water and leave them in the run for three days and three night. The cool breeze on their breast and the lack of a nest to sit on will cause them to stop being broody.
@peytonraymonde37005 жыл бұрын
Well I wanna break my broody hens behaviour because we have a rooster and 8 hens and the rooster has been jumping on all of them recently so mainly all the eggs are pretty much fertile. I try to stop my broody hen because even though I want to raise chicks for my farm, I don’t have a heat lamp or a cage for the chicks 😫
@julienavarro45654 жыл бұрын
@@peytonraymonde3700 I don't even use a heat lamp. I let the mother give them warmth, as for the cage part I am assuming you have predators. It is either predators or your kinda scared what the chickens might do to the chick. My rooster doesn't do anything to anything to the chicks I have had. I have 4 chickens and all of them were nice to the chicks unless they went to eat some of their food which is why I separated all their buckets far away from the adults.
@jessieburwell34624 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!! Thank you so so much for saying that! Letting them sit there is not good for them. It takes ALOOOT of energy. Plus barely eatinn, drinking, and not taking care of them is very very bad for them and their health. Especially if your not wanting chicks, or if eggs aren't fertilized. It's not worth it for the hen. I think it's cruel in a way to let her stay broody.
@gilbertperez37554 жыл бұрын
@@jessieburwell3462 I think you can smash your morning omlet eggs in front of the chicken to make it think u crushed the shell like a predator.

Just open the roof for sunlight. Lay a bowl of water and food for peaking distance. That's it.
@jessieburwell34624 жыл бұрын
I think that's kind of REALLY NESSED UO to not do anything about it. Especially if they're not fertilized. Because they WILL stay broody until they hear little peeps from babies and they'll be sitting for a very long time which can be seriously bad for their health. So if you don't want babies, or the eggs aren't fertilized, don't let them stay broody. Some will snap out of it, but some will not and that's seriously not good for them.
