I’ve been watching one Carolina couple flit around my yard for ~15 months. they love messing about in my enclosed patio, picking bugs off the screens, and terrorizing larger birds like blue jays who encroach. there is also a cardinal couple and it seems like they’re the only regulars the wrens let pass; sometimes they feed together like they were having a double date. i learned that wrens can grow accustomed to other neighbors as “dear enemies” once they establish borders, which i find adorable-they are so feisty and temperamental for such a tiny, cute species. of course, having the wrens and cardinals hang out together makes it even more difficult to tell the calls apart 😂 anyway thanks for this video, the footage is fantastic and the narration is very well-delivered and informative! hopefully i can recognize the difference between the dryness of the cardinals’ calls and the wrens’ burbly-ness.

Well now, if that wasn't fun to read! I mean it's fun to hear your enthusiasm for "your" birds. I know how you feel. I've been hearing the Carolina sing so often this winter because they hang out here for the cylinder shaped feeder. It never fails to bring a smile no matter where I am in the house. Did you know that I just published another movie about Carolinas? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3q3XpaXhch_e6M

I have a local C. Wren pair, male settled here first last summer and found a mate last month in March. Survived a Southern Canada winter this year. He Loves dehydrated meal worms fed from a jelly feeder daily. No other species here eats them (yet). Very tolerant of us working on the patio close to the feeder. I adore him. I plan on feeding him year round in hopes the cold doesn't take him during winter. May put up some winter nesting boxes too. Next winter may be more harsh.

I just moved to Virginia and have fallen in love with the Carolina Wrens. Their round little shapes remind me of sparrows in Ireland, and their calls are SOOOO proud. This was so valuable in helping me ascribe that big song to that little bird! Thanks!

It's easy not to know what the wren's song is because it can be hard to locate his small, muted body. But his songs are really something, aren't they?

This was a sweet little video, thank you! 😊 Have been doing a bit of research on these little guys since we first noticed one perched up in the corner of our porch 2 years ago. We at first took him for a baby owl because of the mottled coloring and puffy feathers (which we've since learned they sport while sleeping). We've affectionately named him 'Woodson'. Sometimes there will be 2 'Woodsons' snuggled together, and we've even had 3 in the corners once or twice. But most nights, it's one little lone guy tucked away for bed. We'll even avoid stepping outside at dusk so we don't disrupt him from settling in. We've learned his nesting habits and times - which grows earlier each night as the year closes out. Our bedtime routine for our dogs' potty break now includes flashlights & hushed voices so we disturb him as little as possible. Followed by a quiet "Good night, Woodson". And yes, as another commented; "Cheeseburger!, Cheeseburger!, Cheeseburger!" is definitely what I hear. 😂

Great comparisons Jo. Love the mnemonics approach (and the Cary Grant mention). Even in an urban setting, the wren and carolina voices carry over a very large distance. They are both a joy to hear but the Carolina Wren is not a frequent visitor so when its singing is heard - it is a wonderful surprise and sometimes challenge to locate this little powerhouse.

The mnemonics may help, but in the end I know them apart because I'm so familiar with Cardinal calls--usually the machine gun. The timbre of the two voice is similar, but I've gotten to where I usually can tell them apart. Practice makes perfect. Enjoy the maddening fun, Ian.

I absolutely adore my Carolina wrens! I think I commented about this on another channel, but I had one Carolina wren that looked so well kempt, and another that was smaller that I called janky bird, because his feathers were always a hot mess! I would always make sure to feed janky bird just what it wanted, and what it always wanted was suet. What's funny about Carolina wrens is that they are the only birds that will stand on top of the suet, in the suet! It cracks me up! And aren't Carolina wrens the ones out there calling out all of the bad boys of the neighborhood with their "Cheater, cheater, cheater!!!" call?

for decades now, in northern NJ, I've been hearing what i call "the cheeseburger bird," because its call is in 3:8 time with emphasis on the first beat & sounds like Dan Aykroyd in the old SNL Greek Diner skit: "cheeseburger cheeseburger cheeseburger cheeseburger." i've only ever been able to visually associate it with the cardinal. Now, a local friend has identified a Carolina wren living in an outdoor flowerpot, and her video of it includes the Carolina wren making virtually the same call. Never having seen or known of the Carolina wren before in 50 years, I am now baffled. Which is it more likely to be?

At 0:53 you can hear the female wren answer her mate with her buzzy trill a couple times! I know Barred owl pairs converse back and forth in the pre-dawn hours but this is the only songbird I'm familiar with that does this. Do you know of any others that have one call for the male and another for the female in reply?

Hi Jo! I observed a Carolina Wren bouncing back and forth on tree branches in my yard this morning on two occasions. I did observe the white eyebrow. I also noticed the beak is about the length of the eyebrow. I’ve had some trouble identifying if it’s a House Wren or Carolina Wren in the past. I am pretty positive what I heard (first) then saw was in fact a Carolina. I live in Northeast PA. Any input on what you think would be lovely!
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME

Olivia D If you saw a cinnamon back, it was definitely a Carolina. But I don’t think you could mistake a Carolina’s song for a house wren’s song. If you’re in doubt, put Carolina Wren, house wren and my name in the KZbin search box. You’ll find one of my old films explaining how to tell them apart. But I would lay money that you Identified that bird correctly. Bravo!

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME its impossible for me to describe the sound with words. Just try to imagine short burst of the most ear piercing loud noise with no breaks. Sometimes it could go on for a 1 hour or more but mostly around 15 minutes. What usually start it is if another bird gets close to the nest or if another carolina wren comes into his territory. One time early on i played a youtube vid of a wren singing. Big mistake he tried attacking me. He would make that sound everytime he saw me but we made up. I bought peace. I buy him a 50count of mealworms each week. He hates cowbirds with a passion everytime he sees one at the feeder he flies at them poking it with his pointy beak over and over til it leaves. The dude is nuts.

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME meal worms are only a little over 2 bucks and i pick them up everytime i go-to the pet store to get seeds. Its really no big deal and the 2 wrens love them. every morning I put 10 worms in the cupholder thats on the arm of my chair. Also i named him Burt Wrenalds and the female Peanut because for some reason she loves peanuts. He doesnt like the peanuts.
