Hey Joe! I'm so happy to have found your videos on here! I've attended a couple of your tree ID sessions. I'll follow along and keep spreading the good word about your website, videos, and ID classes. Cheers!

Hey good to hear from you. Hope you're doing well. I'm glad you found my videos. I'm going to try to put them up more regularly. That's the really hard part.

I am quite confused because you refer to Douglas fir and fir as if Douglas fir isn’t a fir tree. Please educate me! 😅

Yes, I should have better clarified. Douglas fir is not a true fir. True firs are in the genus abies. Douglas fir is in the genus Pseudotsuga

Thanks I've been using the attachment point to distinguish young Fir from Nemlock but now I know that won't work for Douglas-fir.

I have some saplings that (from what your describing) appear to be Doug fir. They are 1-3 years old. Will they still have the thin connection point on the needles if they're that young? Is it too young to tell?

Yes, you should have 3 years worth of needles on the plant. you should be able to look at last years needs which are the ones right behind the newest needles.

What pine trees can be used as a tea for the purpose of vitamin c?

The one I'm most familiar with is the eastern white pine(Pinus strobus) but I know the majority of them are safe. There are a few with some concerns about overconsumption like ponderosa pine. I would recommend that you learn what pines are near you then research those specific species.

what are their uses?

It's uses are basically the same as the other edible evergreens(soft pines, spruce and fir). basically any soft part of the tree is edible. young cones, catkins, new shoots. I haven't eaten douglas fir that often, I believe the taste is similar to the spruce and fir. I made these identification videos, because it seems to me to be one of the trees people confuse the most (pines, spruce, fir and douglasfir).

I live near Auburn, CA and have been told you can make pine tea from Douglas Fir. Is the ones native to my area safe for consumption? I heard pine tea has great health benefits for immune systems.
