Educational, as always. 👍 The Great Tits in my backyard fled their nest last week and the best way to tell them apart from their parents is, they are much puffier. 😀

I've had a loved up pigeon couple nesting in a tree outside the kitchen window. Never saw the chicks fly the nest and was worried. Now i know when they leave they are virtually the same size as they're parents - I'm reassured. Thanks so much!!

In the last couple of weeks I've had a baby siskin joining it's parents, a you chaffinch and a young dunnock. I dread the baby starlings coming because they make a lot of noise chasing their parents round the garden for food which can alert the cats in our neighbour hood and also the sparrow hawk!!!

Nice one Liam. For the young Blue Tits and Great Tits it's also worth mentioning that they have something of a lemon-yellow wash to their plumage for a good while after leaving the nest. Colour vision deficiency notwithstanding of course! As for the Robin, I have heard people query whether the brown-mottled ones were the adult female. I soon put them straight though - in the nicest possible way! 👍😉👍 Keep up the good work buddy!
@AShotOfWildlife4 ай бұрын
Cheers Graham. Thats a handy extra bit of information about the colouring of young birds. I will keep an eye out for that in the future. Nice work on setting them straight, although I do see how they could think that was the case I suppose. Take care and I hope all is well with you and your wife.

Hay Leam, why are the bumblebees dying? We see so many dead ones on the ground. Any ideas?
@AShotOfWildlife4 ай бұрын
Hello. I think it probably depends on the time of year, in the autumn a lot of bees die naturally but at other times they might be dying from disease of sadly, from pesticides.

We've already had fledged Great Tits, in *April*! I was astounded. And then our blackbirds have fledged *three* chicks. They're noisy buggers! Although they do finally seem to have gone their separate ways. It's all very early. Meanwhile the dunnocks and robins are clearly nesting right now, as are the crows, which look ridiculous perched on the fat ball feeder, delicately prising out chunks of suet to take away.
@AShotOfWildlife4 ай бұрын
Wow, that is really early for the great tits. I have a nest full of blue tits in the garden at the moment, almost ready to fledge!
@SMTRodent4 ай бұрын
@@AShotOfWildlife It is *so* early! All I can think of is that we're giving them plenty of food and they seem to thrive on it. We have blue tits around but I wish we had more.

Although Blackbirds are technically Thrushes, species such as the Song thrush have declined by around 50% over the past 50 years unfortunately.
