Pearls are beautiful and can be used in jewelry to make stunning creations. But how much do we actually know about them? Apparently there are as many as 17 different types of pearls and these fall into three main categories - natural, cultured and imitation. The most valuable pearls are perfectly symmetrical, relatively large and produced naturally. They shine and shimmer and have an iridescence known as orient lustre. The main oyster beds lie in the Persian Gulf, along the coasts of India and Sri Lanka, and in the Red Sea. Chinese pearls come mainly from freshwater rivers and ponds, whereas Japanese pearls are found near the coast in salt water. Cultured pearls as the name suggests are cultivated by human intervention. Foreign material serving the same purpose as the irritant in natural pearls, is implanted inside the mollusc. It takes 2 - 4 years for the pearls to be created in saltwater and 2 - 7 years for freshwater pearls.
Imitation pearls are man-made objects designed to look like real pearls. They can be made from a variety of materials including glass, plastic and even small pieces of mollusc shell and a number of methods are used. Coating beads with a pearlescent type substance helps to imitate the iridescence of nacre. However they can easily be identified as imitation as they lose their lustre very quickly. They are of no monetary value.

You can also look your pearls under magnifying glass and lamp. You have to see stripes formed during growth of the pearl and also slight irregularities in colour just like mother of pearl grew over something.

It’s simple to tell, you just have to X-ray the Pearl to identify an area inside which is likely to be rich in organic material, drill a small hole in to this area and extract the drilled powder from the Pearl. Then you simply dilute this powder in to a liquid so you have a solution by which you can extract the DNA. Once you have the DNA solution you just use the standard methods to read the DNA and then compare that DNA to other known natural species of oyster or muscles which produce Pearl. As soon as you have the DNA extracted and then can confirm what oyster or muscle grew it, then you know it is indeed a real Pearl. Easy and straightforward wasn’t it!

really? I thought it was pretty straight forward and simple. pretty much (if you couldn't get any information from the video), the lady was saying that natural pearls aren't perfect spheres and when you rub them together it has a rough feeling and they leave pearl dust behind (due to friction). Fake pearls however are perfect spheres and are smooth to the touch. That's about all the important information she was saying in the video.

Go to the philipines ill show you where the big south seas are. These tiny pearls are a pity haha. Pearls grow in the ocean. Not some landmass like china? Haha

In china they grow in factory.. Hahaha.. Forget the ocean, just produce it in factory and claim as original and natural pearls.. China will never stop imitate and copies everything.

Yes! People, if you want real or genuinel south sea pearls go to the philippines and other asian countries that has south sea pearl farms. It is expensive because it is in the sea and you need to dive to get those mussels/mollusks etc. South sea pearls takes years to form. 😁
