Thank you Dr.Lori. I found a ring in a 5$ bag at the thrift store. I didn’t look at the bag. It was marked 999 Mexico and I knew right away it was pure silver thanks to YOU. I learned silver isn’t only marked 925.

I just inherited a ring from my great great grandma. Its platinum, diamond and sapphire. The ring was in a box of a jeweler that closed down and I can only find one thing on the web about the jeweler from 1888. Ironically that is the year my GG Grandma was married. My husband says its a Victorian, my mom says its a Edwardian. I thought it was Art Deco. I'm getting it appraised in a few weeks but am curious to find out how old the ring is. Platinum wasn't readily available till 1920s, right?

I have a ring I got at a estate sale about 15 years ago. I can’t find the appraisal and information on the center stone. It has TGG14K inside the band. It was my understanding that it is a one of a kind and the center stone is only mined in a different country and I can’t remember what country. I am going to try to figure out how to post a couple photos of it and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your informational video is interesting but lacking. You might want to clarify the difference between open settings and closed ones in jewelry and how it indicates value and quality or lack of it in a piece of jewelry. Also explaining why some stones are "foiled" or coated with reflective material and some aren't and why and how it pertains to a stones value would be handy. Clarifying that for some stones clarity, cut and perfection equals more value (such as in diamonds, topaz, sapphire ) and that inclusions, colored striations etc in others (such as in opal, lapis lazuli and amber) is essential to the value of other kinds of precious/semiprecious stones. You would serve your audience better if you also explained to them how diamonds are a bad investment when compared to other precious stones, platinum and gold. Why are your lectures always so generalized and may I dare say vague at times?

Hi Lori, We have an Alexandrite stone in our family that my Great-Grandfather obtained in Russia in the late 19th Century, and then had it mounted into a ring to give to his wife. My Mom now has the ring, and I'd like to have it appraised, but I'm actually afraid to let it out of my sight. I've heard that they are worth $15,000.00 a carat, and can even go up to $70,000.00 a carat if the ring is over a certain carat amount. I'm guessing the one we have is around 8 to 10 carats. Is there a way to have it certified and valued with someone without leaving it in their possession? I just fear that they might remove the stone and put a synthetic one in there instead and tell me it wasn't real, even though I know it's the real deal. They didn't even make synthetic ones when he obtained it in Russia. Thank you!
@DrLoriV5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should be concerned. It does happen. Find someone who will review the piece in front of you the entire time. Don't let it leave your sight.
