Had a bad coil among other things that needed fixed. Took it to a mechanic because some of the repairs were more than what I wanted to do. I asked them if I should replace all 8 of the coils. They said they tend to be expensive so they only change them as needed. No sense in changing one if it's not bad. Truck had 195,000 miles with original coils. Ran great for a few months then another coil went bad. I'm going to replace them all except the one the mechanic already replaced a few months ago.

anyone know why when i look at all these videos they show the coil having the bolt and a plastic top? I have a 1999 F150 Lobo 4.6l but mine has more like a rubber coil with the wire attached to it. I cannot take it off so if anyone has tips or clues that would be great thanks

Ok I have a question are not the boots on the coils rubber? How does that soak up any liquid now getting old and hot and even chemicals could and I'm sure does break them down but absorbing. not so sure. but would like someone's opinion.

@OtterPup_ I actually did cylinder #4 yesterday, I basically laid on the engine and blindly found the little bolt, I just bought a Dewalt mechanic set recently THANK GOD!!! It came with all those extensions and 90° elbow and I felt around got it all switched and it worked perfect. Also had to unhook the negative from the battery for 15 mins to reset the check engine light. Other than that it was just patience and about 2 hours of planking blindly 🤣 at least the rest of the cylinders are easier to reach. Thanks for the update

Yes. Whenever you put a load on the engine. Worse in a 4.6 than a 5.4.

Those are individual coils. Not "coil packs". Coil packs are two or more coils ganged together. Typically used for wasted spark systems. You have coil-on-plug. COP.

I have a question. I have a 2003 ford e150 with a 4.6l v8. I had the p0307 cylinder #7 missfire issue. I looked up diagrams and swapped out cylinder #7 coil. #7 to my best understanding is the 3rd one closest to the driver. My van doesn't seem to jerk anymore but I'm not 100% that i did it right. Did i do the right thing? Or does the firing order makes another cylinder #7? I don't know how cylinder order works, so i don't know if i did it right. It's a wheel chair transportation van and the last thing i want to do is get stranded, but mechanic wants over $700 to fix it. Did i swap the right cylinder coil?

This job sucks. I used 1/4 inch drive with 2 universals and 3 extensions. And an impact driver. Plugs I used a 3/8 drive and Milwaukee 3/8 impact. #4 and #8 coil are the hardest to get at. So I just change them out. Don’t want to go back in a second time. Just getting the boot out is frustrating. Lots of curse words will come out.

@@johnedwards2127 I stuck a stainless welding rod between the boot and the spark plug to unstick them two. Then made a small hook on the end of the rod and stuck it down the boot to hook it out. I used stainless because it was stiffer

The #1 coil pack on my ‘01 f150 5.4L has failed several times within a few months of replacing. I have replaced the spark plug. No problem with other cylinders. What next? Is there a way to check the wiring? Suggestions?

The oem replacement coils are all cheaply made. Just buy a pack of coils off amazon. Mabye a v10 pack for 10th the price.

No that’s not normal at all. You have a coolant leak somewhere that’s leaking down into the spark plug well.

Are you sure that's a 4.6 another 5.4? Because I got a 4.6 and it has ignition wires does not have a coil pack on top of my spark plug like that

Depends on what year it is. I believe 97-98 models had the coil packs with spark plug wires going to the spark plug and starting in 99-2010 they started using Coil On Plug design. 99-2003 4.6 and 5.4 engines are identical on the outside, the difference is from the bore and stroke of the pistons that’s makes them Iether 4.6 or 5.4

Find a wiring schematic for under the dash, since some models came with a tach in the dash you ought to be able to find that unused signal wire and tap into it.
