Thanks for the comment FH and also to ‪@aliabdaal‬ for his fantastic Skillshare class on Final Cut Pro X.
This is my first attempt at beginners level animating to demonstrate how IV (intravenous) cannulation actually works!
I found the visualisation of this technique and the way each part moves with respect to the vein quite difficult as a junior doctor and not something that was ever explained to me.
Hope this video sheds some light on this critical skill that many healthcare providers will need to know.

Hey! I have and i literally use all the tips from my iv cannulation playlist. Also the normal saline in the chamber trick. Theres a vid for that too. The one extra thing i do when i cant even see a vein, is using a torch light under the palm.. shining up to the dorsum. This allows me to see the shadow of veins. Ill then use all the tricks i have to get the vein now that i can see one.

I really appreciate you sharing your expertise. I am a nurse and struggling in cannulation. But then came across your channel and voila, never been confident starting a line. There are still misses but not as much as before. Thank you! Also how do you prevent having blood in the punctured site upon inserting the needle during venepuncture? Oftentimes when I draw blood, upon inserting the needle blood will show in the punctured site. I don’t know what am I doing wrong. Others noticed it too. Hahaha

Hello! Have you tried using a clear straw as the vein when demonstrating insertion? Thank you for all the videos especially for IV insertion. Really helped me a lot in my practice. Very clear and calm manner in teaching. I’m sure for a lot of other clinicians benefited also.

Hey I have one question! If you have a DVT of an upper limb like in Subclavian vein, can we insert iv canula in the peripheral veins of that limb?
@ABCsofAnaesthesia
@ABCsofAnaesthesia 2 жыл бұрын
Great question and tricky scenario! I would avoid that limb for cannulation if at all possible. Upper limb DVTs are an unusual site and usually will be managed by a haematologist. I would ask them for further advice about the cause, treatment and if caution needs to be taken when inserting iv cannulas in other parts of the body as well.

Is it advisable to cannulate a vein in a weak arm for a patient who has suffered a CVA (stroke)? (Assuming you can only see a vein in the weak arm)
@ABCsofAnaesthesia
@ABCsofAnaesthesia Жыл бұрын
thats a really good question! I think everything is a balance of risk and benefit. Risk = patients neuro deficit may mean unable to protect arm, wont sense pain, wont sense signs of infection etc.. Benefit = receive critical treatment/meds/fluids etc... If this patient had no other options and really needed the IV therapy, (without knowing your individual circumstance, and not able to give specific medical advice) i would cautiously proceed with input from your boss, treating team etc... hope that helps!

One huge flaw in all your videos, which you strangely emphasise a lot, is the fact one should go “slow”. Slow is when you get rolled veins. Go fast.

Very helpful videos. Watched your first video on IV cannulation and after that I passed 3 neat ones but today I tried it on a paediatric patient that didn't go too well and that's why i am back here. Quick one, how do you stretch the skin on the forearm so you don't lose the visible vein. Also can you help with a video on the not too visible veins and also veins such as the external jug or femoral vein. T for thanks.
