Dear Mr Chris Trump: Can you answer to me, if its possible to extract Humic acid from Vermicompost? If i buy Worm Humus (as i read in the bag) in a bag, will i be able to extract some Humic acid with potassium hydroxide? It would be nice to see a video from you about this subject. I have only found 1 video in You tube and the guy uses some Humate bought from Canada. That does not help me. I need to find local sources. I live in Portugal. I also dont think I would get my hands on Leonardite around here in a shop. He also mentioned that we could extract Humic Acid from charcoal. This would be nice but i would need more info. Could you help me up a little bit? I am completely new in this world and i have been watching your videos with great interest and respect. I admire your calm and humble way. So the dry macadamia husks I imagine slowly mix into the IMO 3 since you have to turn the pile and cover it again, that small of a material seems unlikely you can completely uncover the pile before turning

Hi; Interesting work. I watched one of your videos (mixing collection with brown sugar) that someone posted on a forum so was attracted to this one by the thumbnail which showed a microscopic image. Do you use any microscopy to observe the microbial development? We did make various fermentations on our farm through the 90s and up to 2009 when age crept up. I discovered EM cultures during this period and began purchasing and using them. These used in tandem with aerated compost slurry (extrapolations) (ACT) were our mainstay. I do think that these two processes work as yin and yang; the IMO or EMO acting as soil building baseline (needs better words) [nutrient miners?]; fungi, yeast, bacteria, archaea and the ACT as the nutrient cyclers; flagellates, naked amoebae, fungi, yeast, bacteria, archaea. Just a note from a comment in the other video is that molasses does feed fungi as well as yeast and bacteria/archaea.

+Akil Taylor master Cho recommends grain vinegars. That being said you really need to just use what you can get inexpensively. Try and make sure it is made from a plant or fruit though. There is such thing as vinegar made from synthetic ethanol, don't use that... they don't have to label it either...

Chris thanks for the videos. Ive been making fpj for years but havent done a successful imo becuase i dont know what carbon source i can use. Im here in samoa. We have lots of kalo lots of coconuts. Both giving waste products in excess. Kalo skins and graded coconut meat and or husks. Do you think either of these would work? Every pile of kalo skins and graded coconut byproduct just team with mysellium after a few days of being discarded.

+The Nutrition Heretic , great questions! There is not a list, it is better for you to play with this balance, but maybe I'll make a list anyways. Here is 'a how' to think about this: High carbon (by ratio of other content) = a material that has more weight in 'structure' than in 'juice' or other gooey stuff... The 'what's left' part if you were to juice it... i.e. If you juice grass and then dry the pulp, you have a lot of juice and just a pinch of fluffy light weight 'structural' left over. Where as if we were able to 'juice' a pine tree trunk, we would have VERY little juice and A LOT of 'wood/structural material' left over. This example is a very silly but accurate way to describe the ratios of carbon : nitrogen in these two plants types. Carbohydrate = generally for this we want a somewhat complex carbohydrate. Some things can be done with processed sugar, but not IMO. Many, many materials fit into this category. (Please avoid strait molasses also, though this is a different issue) I hope this helps Adrienne!! ;)

OK. The carbon description sort of makes sense, but it seems that carbohydrates could fit that definition as well. I guess I'm getting caught up in the fact that structurally carbohydrates are made up of carbon... hence the name. I've got access to sawdust, mac nut husks and shells, dry/fresh bamboo leaves/shoots, bedding from chicken coop.... I guess I'll start playing with it and see what happens :)

The Nutrition Heretic So of the list you gave here i would divide them like this. High C:N ratio materials (high carbon low nitrogen): mac shell, sawdust, dry bamboo leaves & sticks. The mac husk and fresh bamboo are closer to an even C:N ratio. The chicken coop poop/bedding might be pretty high N:C (high nitrogen to lower carbon) though not what I would refer to as a carbohydrate. I am sorry if I am saying things you already know. Just trying to bring clarity :) Have fun!

hello Chris, I've been watching your videos on how to IMO3...I was wondering if you can answertwo questions for me ..one can I use coconut tree saw dust...I have a bunch of coconut trees that I had cut down over two years ago and it's has started to break down Same consistency ass saw dust...I also have coconut shells that are dry and can easily be crumbled down like the shell macadamia nuts you use...two the turning process after Mixing all your inputs what is the end goal? do we keep turning until it stops heating up... typically how many days you turn the IMO 3 pile?...thank man I hope this doesn't take too much of your time... Lysander Tudela heya! So coco tree is not a great material for imo3, coco shell can be used for your 'carbon' but you will still need a carbohydrate ideally. You turn daily at temperatures 100+ after it drops below 100 Fahrenheit you can hold off turning to every other day or not at all. As the water gets used up, the pile will stop heating, when it goes below 80 (after heating up initially) it is pretty much done and you can stop turning. I hope this helps! Chris Trump can I use crushed chicken feed some are almost powder form....the other is flour for baking...some chicken or pig feed are pelletized but when they become wet or moist they begin to break down...mold will eventually grow...are any of these good source of carbohydrates?

+Morgrim X Yes I often do, but you don't need to. A grass mat made of bundled grass is pretty ideal. Something you can put on and take off when you turn the pile.

I'm recently learning about KNF this season and have been playing with IMO for a few months now. I'm growing out IMO3 in a large container - I used about 5 gallons of wheat bran as my medium. I only used IMO2 and water, since my other inputs aren't' ready. Its heated up and begun to cool off (128 down to about 95, day 5) but has an incredible ammonia smell. Was one of the missing additives (LAB?) responsible for keeping the odor under control? Thx.

wheat bran should work for a carb but you need a carbon..basically a carbon is a living or once living matter that hasnt fully been broken down.
