Actually I liked it and found it soothing as I am new to moodle and it stresses me out. So maybe just include it but at a lower volume so that your voice stands out over it. Thanks for the great tutorial. This will be so useful in my teaching.

I have been using this tool called GETMARKED Digitaliser. It allows me to create a Moodle XML file from my Word document quiz directly. The amazing thing about the tool is that i don't have to conform to any specific format. Despite the fact that the Word document quiz i prepared is for classroom use, it is still able to identify all the questions and answers inside it. Really really helpful honestly. Saved a lot of time from my end without having to create questions one by one.

Very helpful. Sooo many steps. One very important thing missed: you can't have anything in the text of the files besides letters and regular punctuation. Quotation marks and parenthesis, for example, completely throw Moodle off with the import. As soon as it sees quotation marks, for example, it just starts deleting. So you have to remove all of these. Once you have the quiz or test imported, you can add these back in; it's not that Moodle can't display them; it can't import them. Another step and a pretty big hassle. The import works best with very straightforward quizzes and tests.

Easy to understand presentation, but I didn't see the answer options for filling in the blanks with that appropriate answers, A - D, on the Quiz uploaded to Moodle. Was that because we only saw the teacher version of the quiz, not what the students would view opening it up?
@Facultyworkshop
@Facultyworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback Colleen. I'm not sure I quite understant the question. Did you watch your students to actually type in a correct answer into a blank or simply select the correct answer to a fill-in the blank from a multiple choice list. If the former, you may want to consider using the "Short Answer" type of question in Moodle.

Excellent video, many thanks (others have mentioned the music...not a big fan!). One thing I noticed is your screen shots of Moodle are somewhat different than mine, and it did cause some navigation fun to try to keep up with you. The other nuance is how the Word doc has to be formatted to get it to save properly...for me, a hard return between everything! It did work beautifully, though! I am very appreciative!

@gautam murthy. So the short answer on the math question is no. There is not an easy way of doing what you need done. One way to address this issue is to upload all of your questions that do not contain symbols, images, or graphs and then simply add them in manually into Moodle.

"Kristi Bowker: The same thing happened to me. It says I have 10 questions but only 7 of the questions had text." Kristi, it's probably a formatting issue in your text file. If you can you upload the text file with the questions to your Google Drive and share a link I'd be happy to look at it. Or you can submit a reply below with your text questions and I'll generate a text file and test it out on Moodle.

The video is really helpful. Thank you so much. I am gonna try this. May I ask a question related to the possibilities of a single try when answering a quiz question. I see that I can set one attempt for the quiz but I can't find a way in moodle that I can set "one single try" when answering, for example a multiple question. Which means that the student will not have the option to change his or her answer once it is submitted. Is there such a feature in moodle? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the questions. As far as I am able to tell, there does not seem to be a setting for what you are asking. One thing I have done to minimize students ability to cheat is to give them shorter time limits, only present 1 question at a time, and shuffle the questions and answers for students.

+Haggisbreath I love the name :) I agree about the music. I wish I could remove it, but alas, KZbin doesn't provide that feature at this time. For other question formats, you will want to use the GIFT format, not Aiken. GIFT requires a bit more coding, but it allows you greater flexibility in importing other questions formats (e.g., Multiple choice, Multiple choice with multiple right answers, True-false, Short answer, Matching, Missing word, Numerical questions, Essay, and Description). Here are a few videos that where I use GIFT format to import questions. If there's a specific format that you'd like me to cover, please leave me another comment. Many thanks for the useful information. Yours is the best source of info that is necessary ONLY because Moodle is a lumbering, opaque monstrosity. I'm required to use it but neither Moodle nor my university walks us through the nonintuitive, scattered, unnecessarily complex steps that were obviously compiled by full-bore schizophrenics. Dealing with Moodle's anti-educational garbage pile is always the most frustrating, time-wasting part of every semester. OK, a rant but that's all I'm left with.

Great video demonstration on how to use Moodle to set a quiz. Simplified and very easy to follow. My question is: Can you upload a question file, even if your questions contain figures, schemes and/or pictures? Thank you
@Facultyworkshop
@Facultyworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
The short answer is not using this specific method. You are able to do that using an XML format, however that is a lot more tedious and time-consuming. For me, it makes more sense to simply upload textbased questions in bulk as I demonstrated in the video, and then go on to the Moodle course and add any figures or images that you want to the questions that require them.

@Facultyworkshop
@Facultyworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
There is using GIFT format, but the formatting for bulk questions, in my opinion takes too long and it would be faster and easier for me to simply build the matching questions directly on Moodle instead of uploading it. Here's an example of what the question format would look like in gift format, you can use other formats but there even more work than this one: Match the following countries with their corresponding capitals. { =Canada -> Ottawa =Italy -> Rome =Japan -> Tokyo =India -> New Delhi }

I've had that situation before as well and in most cases it turned out that my upload file did not have the proper formatting. I had to go back and check every single question line by line to make sure that it was correctly formatted. Another thing that you can check for is to ensure that your txt file format is UTF-8.

Do you mean uploading bulk feedback rather than adding it manually one by one?

Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot. I would want to ask: What if I have a reading passage before the questions? Do I add it as a separate question with no weight? Or does it go separately?

If the following questions are all related to the passages, I'd include the passage in the instructions of the questions.

Thank you for a great, easy to follow tutorial. I have already played around with it and it works great! My question is: Is there a way using this same format and not having to code in GIFT format to make a question that has a picture included. For example, I want to insert a picture of an ECG strip with a multiple choice question of "Identify this rhythm"? Thanks in advance!!

The short answer is no. You can't add images with GIFT or Aiken formats. There are some advanced Moodle user (developer-level) who claim to have been able to import images using XML format, which frankly speaking isn't easy. There is some documentation to explain how to do it, but the process requires the use of an XML converter software. Unfortunately, it is in Russian. I haven't found a current version in English. Regarding your other questions, if you don't want to use GIFT, you can use Aiken, which is simplier. However, Aiken is appropriate for simple multiple choice and true/false type questions. GIFT requires a bit more coding, but it allows you greater flexibility in importing other questions formats (e.g., Multiple choice, Multiple choice with multiple right answers, True-false, Short answer, Matching, Missing word, Numerical questions, Essay, and Description).

Thanks for uploading. Very useful but unfortunately the loud music background distracts and hinders me from hearing your instructions well. Wish there was none.

It looked like the multiple choice options from your quiz - A, B, C and D didn't display to students when you'd finished but not sure if this is the case? Is there a way of making the options they choose from display if not?
@Facultyworkshop

The multiple choice answers were there, but I didn't click on the questions in edit mode to show view them. Had I done that, you would've seen the actual choices. I only showed the import feature and the list of the questions, but you actually have to click on the questions to see the choices. The students won't have a problem seeing the choices/answer options, but it is always a good idea to check and make sure that the students are seeing what you want them to see :)

Thanks for this tutorial! I am just starting to Moodle and have a couple questions: 1) Is it possible to have a bank of questions for a given course that randomly selects a number of questions to be shown to the user for a quiz? (Thus, if the user has to retake the quiz (s)he wouldn't see the exact same questions.) 2) Can quizzes include activity-based questions? (e.g., user sees multiple rows of boxes and has to select boxes that are NOT correct answers.)

Welcome to the wonderful world of Moodle Krystal! The answer to questions 1 is kind of. You can set up question bank with say 20 questions and then create quiz with 10 questions. The second can be randomized, but there's a possibility that a question that showed up on the first attempt will make an appearance the second time around. So if you really!!! Did not want any questions to reappear, you'd need to create two separate quizzes. With regards to your second question, I'm not sure what you have in mind, but it sounds like the "Drag and drop" question types might achieve the same effect that I think you are looking for. Start with the "Drag and drop into text" see if that works for you.

Suburb explanation.............I had one doubt.........My each question is having different competencies to judge for students. can we map competencies different for each question of quiz

Actually, I think it's doable by activity (assignment, whole quiz, etc..) not sure if you can separate it by an individual question.
