I'm growing on extremely stony/pebbled, heavy, compacted clay - like you, there was very little soil life. I dug it and incorporated compost this year and it's been very successful. From winter, it'll be no-dig - now there is life in the soil, and structure, I can just mulch with compost and grow straight in. Your soil looks like a less stony version of mine, hard work with a fork!

We did this in the backyard of our 120 year old house this spring! After we cleared the weeds, we just used shovels and spent a couple weeks manually tilling the soil because there were so many things buried! We found children’s toys from the 50’s, SO many old keys, lots of stones and pieces of old cement walkways. It was nuts, especially with the hard clay soil. But after a few bags of compost and top soil, our bed was ready to go and we have lots of happy plants in there today!

A lot cheaper and no rentals to just use a pick axe to till small areas like this. Especially since you're not going deep. I make in ground beds that are anywhere between 1 foot to 3 feet deep with a pick axe because my clay soil is so hard the roots won't be able to penetrate, then shovel it out and dump the hard clay. Then fill the holes with peat moss / compost / black kow / perlite / etc. The ground is so soft if I step in it I'll sink 6 inches
@rivitraven3 жыл бұрын
Don't get rid of the clay, mix it with some sand and it will be ok for your plants to grow in the clay is good for your plants because it likes to hold on to water when it's saturated enough, you then won't have to water your plants as much. Not only that but clay is a great source of natural minerals because the minerals are broken down from their larger source, it's a great source of potassium and phosphorus, copper, iron, and zinc for your plants. Of course you do want to have organic matter inside it too to prevent compaction. Not only that but clay soils tend to naturally be slightly acidic so do take a ph test to see how acidic it is and wether or not you need to add anything for what you want to plant.
@ikigai473 жыл бұрын
@@rivitraven - I tried sand and I've even tried Gypsum (to loosen clay soil). For some reason I can't get the ratio right and it gets super compact again when I check after a while, maybe my Texas clay is just super stubborn. But you're right, everyone says clay is awesome when altered correctly.
@trinatarial3 жыл бұрын
@@rivitraven Don't ever use sand to amend clay soil. Due to the difference in soil particle size, the clay will just mold around the clay and increase the compaction/remove pore space. Instead you need to add organic matter to improve texture over time. Mixing in compost/manure/worm castings will help add pore space, improve drainage, and listen/improve the texture of the soil.

Hi Kevin, I know you said that you don't want to do any low plants in your in-ground bed but you should consider interplanting some daikon radish between the other plants- even if it is just a few. They will force their way down into that hard pan underneath your improved soil and break it up which should allow the soil biology to improve down deep a lot sooner than it otherwise would. Kind of like a sneaky, stealth, soil conditioning cover crop hiding in what appears to be a normal garden. :) Love what you are doing! Keep up the awesome job! I have always watered the area I want to rototill, the day before rototilling. This loosens the compacted soil a bit, and reduces all that dust. Hi Kevin, Just love this video. Lock down also got our family gardening here in Zimbabwe, I completely scrapped the idea of a garden bed. I practically mulched our whole back yard, and in the mulch I open pockets where I place compost, in which I plant. There is a crazy element of natural randomness to our vegetable garden. It working a treat and then in places where I would like a little bit of order, I have recycled tractor tires into organic self fertilizing raised beds (my latest video shows exactly that). Just also wanted to say this channel is one of the reason why our family decided to use its lock down period to start gardening, which has been an amazing and enriching experience for us, so thank you so so much for that. Agreed. I always wait for rain to weed xD to get to the roots. Otherwise the tops just snips off in the dry clay soil. Same for digging and tilling. Even when tilling after a (not so long) while everything gets compact and hard again so it seems of little use. We just finished building our first raised bed with wood logs and clippings on the bottom and the soil mix from the square foot gardening on top. Fingers crossed for better, easier and more ergonomic results.

I am doing similar here. For your larger space in the back yard weeding pesticide free can be a breeze if you pick up black load covers or lumber wraps for free from lumber yards. Stretch the black poly out and weigh it down on the sides. Leave it 3 months and the weeds will bake compost and disintegrate under it. I recommend removing the seeds and tilling if you must after doing this. Otherwise you might till weed seeds deep into soil. Mulch on top of the poly weighs it down and makes it less unsightly. I placed my potted plants on top to weigh it down. Did this with a few acres years ago. Or and you could buy landscape fabric to do similar. Thinking of your big patch here. If you did that within an hour or two it could save you time energy and possibly $ in the future while you concentrate on your smaller front garden.
@trishdavi70494 жыл бұрын
Also top dressed the weed free soil with fresh soil and for the potatoes patch made the mistake of using straw for the lasagne raised bed and had straw seeds sprouted up everywhere. This time I'm using alfalfa with higher nitrogen content and higher cost and using it as mulch
@epicgardening4 жыл бұрын
Fantastic idea...plan to do something very similar!
@trishdavi70494 жыл бұрын
While landscape fabric is built to last decades the load covers disintegrate after a year or two. They are a great economical temporary solution to the weeds. Also handy as free tarps. I hope you plan a decent sized pathway or even driveway for your third acre harvests. Although you said the lowquats may produce more than you can use or process have you considered selling some of your produce at local markets? There were undercover documentaries illustrating non local produce sold at some of those markets at increased prices that was not genuine home grown non GMO local produce as people shopping there thought they were buying. Surely if you produce such an abundance there is a demand for what you can not consume. Please consider saving some space for your harvests. It's saddening to see so many fruit trees up here have nobody harvesting them. They are overgrown and neglected while real estate speculators do nothing with valuable land and crops. There are groups of people up above the 49th parallel who do harvests from some elderly or overly abundant growers that then donate to food banks. So much better than letting it go to waste.

Great video. I just moved into a new home and built 6 raised bed gardens. In other areas I just dug holes in the clay and filled with a better soil and works. But this seems so much easier and you don’t have to find somewhere to put the clay. I wish I had a tiller as this would be so much easier to make some flower beds. Maybe I’ll see if I can rent one

Hey there! Beds are looking good :) One recommendation: once you plant your veggies, go ahead and throw those wood chips (or hay) back on top of the soil. This will conserve moisture, protect the soil, and begin the process of breaking down the bottom layer of the mulch. Come next season, those wood chips will be on their way to becoming new, healthy soil. One of the easiest ways to build your soil! Cheers from Atlanta

It was an amazing experience. I bet that tree smells fantastic! Is it going to move to the orchard eventually? I would like to learn more about that variety of ginger. Maybe you could have a patch dedicated to spices but not like the most obvious herbs, maybe rare varieties of herbs or stuff that most people use dried like fresh peppercorn or Turmeric? I also brought back this flower, butterfly pea, which you can make a blue tea out of that turns purple when you add acid which is cool (going to infuse it into some tequila). You mentioned Bermuda grass.....the rhizomes are several feet deep....I gave up for now growing in the ground and started with raised beds (yes Birdies!❤️) on top of cardboard + weed fabric last year and expanding this year. Before that I had a 1-2 foot deep wood chip garden: the Bermuda grass went happily through that and also pierced potatoes .....I dug it up ( cause every piece regrows quickly, it's actually amazing how good it can survive hidden), after that I tilled and then the wood chips on top. Other plants did well....but also Bermuda thought I prepared this so it can thrive better. Well I am pretty sure it will pierce through the fabric and will come up through the raised beds after some years, since there's good soil and water. Our big trees do the same wherever I had some water they find it and we appreciate a cooler oasis. Still a struggling happy gardener! Have to find the best way to coexist and have hopefully some harvest👍🌱😊

Love Thai Basil!! It grows so easy with my purple basil. The taste of Thai Basil reminds me of licorice. So good!

I love that your friend mixed ornamental plants with herbs. Marigolds are supposed to keep certain pests away due to their pungent aroma. I grow tapioca in my yard for the colorful leaves. Does anyone else grow tapioca for eating?

@@epicgardening Tapioca is very easy to propagate by cuttings. When mine get to tall, I trim them and shove them in the ground. Say a little let it grow to Mother nature and water it.

This is such a fantastic resource channel! Thank you so much for all of the great content, Kevin! I grew up in a family of gardeners, so much so that my parents are now cultivating dragonfruit on our small family farm, in Colombia. So I’ve learned a lot in my 40 years. But MAN have I learned so much more from your excellent content! Keep at it!

Great video really nice. The visual and the inspiration helps me see I can do small spots in my heavy clay currently unusable garden. It helps me see that I can start small with section like these and build areas up. Thanks

Living in a place like New Orleans, I've worried that heavy rain and flooding would wash in ground beds like this away. Is that a reasonable fear? Love your videos and all of your content Kevin. You're a master at expressing clear, concise (and fun!) gardening knowledge.

Wow that is very compacted soil. Your tiller was barely scratching the surface. When we till most of the wheel goes in, so it tills 6 to 8 inches vs your 1 to 2. I honestly don't think it is a bad idea to rake your potting mix back onto a tarp to till and amend what's underneath in a year or 2. Then use less potting mix as the soil improves. Maybe try it in 1 bed.

Thinking about ditching most of my raised beds for inground with black plastic mulch because it takes too much water for raised and because we have cold spring nights and the raised beds chill faster. Many years ago that’s the only way I did it where I used to live. I am thinking the plastic would help prevent the blight because it’s a soil barrier. Back to basics. Like you, will keep a few for leaf crops.
