Oh my goodness! Perfect timing for me to implement this the 1st week of school! After teaching college readimg & writing for 16 years, I am now teaching at a private school and I needed age-appropriate ideas to help me get a good start with 7th & 8th graders. not allowed to do SSR :( I'm going to try the 15min thing starting Monday. I have 2 class periods where literally students break out into fist fights (not just in my classroom, but lunch, hallway etc) I spend at least 30min of the 90min block mitigating behavior and 2 of my students were suspended by my referral today.

Please read the book, Punished by Rewards. We have created a generation of kids who require "something" for everything they should be doing anyway. The SST and transitions/bellrings are just good practices. By middle school, students know what is expected of them and should be able to comply.

What if you have a student who doesn't do what is expected? Then the whole class doesn't get seconds?

I would say that is a personal decision. You can go that route and hope the peer pressure will change the behavior, or if there is a more substantial problem you can "ignore" the behavior for this strategy. Whatever works for your class!
