How to Improve the Titfield Thunderbolt Trainpack

In the last video we took a close look at Rapido Trains UK's new Thunderbolt loco and compared it with a trip to see the real Lion in Liverpool. This week we review the rest of the train pack and Mr Valentine's bar car before making some modifications and weathering the lot to improve the look.

One of the reasons I refused to buy the Thunderbolt train pack is because I am of the same opinion of you, they got the red completely wrong and made it look like a toy. I opted for the L&MR Lion in 1930s condition. I purchased a Hornby Loriot Y, and made Dan's house from a Triang L&MR Coach, and a Bachmann toad brake van. I did buy a Rapido tram coach, which I partnered with another Bachmann Toad, and a Dapol 14XX as 1401. I refuse to pay their price for the bus, so I got a EFE Bedford OB in blue, and just changed the details so they were similar to the film. I think one major omission from the Titfield pack was Sid James's steam roller, which I do have a correct R10 model, in black, but I have forget who supplied the kit. Your weathering made it look 100% better in my opinion.

Splendid result Max! I feel like this is why Rapido made all the stock so bright and bold looking. It allows for decent weathering without having to worry that you’ll darken the colour too much like I see with too many models. The bright colour shining through the dirt looks much better than grime on top of a flat, lifeless colour and finish. I still say that you should do this sort of thing more often!

Another splendid Thunderbolt video! Bravo for your ingenious detail work! Bravo, indeed! I also loved your head cannon of what occurred after the events of the film. If you construct a Titfield diorama, may I make a suggestion for a dramatic use for it?: The Thunderbolt, with the salvaged tram car, bringing Dan and Mr. Valentine back to the Titfield station for their grand reception for just being released from prison (time off for good behavior, undoubtedly).

Whilst I would like to see more model videos from you in the future, I’m not sure if I’m fond of what you’ve done to Thunderbolt. It looks very grimy and weathered, as though it’s been working for many years without being properly cleaned. I get that it’s more realistic, but it somewhat dampens the grand feel of the loco.
